To Tame a Fire

To tame a fire is underwhelming. Its 3d backgrounds create a world that's devoid of life. I couldn't engage myself with the story, because everything felt so empty. I also couldn't believe in its supernatural elements, everything is cookie cutter unoriginal, and bland. Oh, and the dialogue & writing feels amateurish. For one, I really dislike how the author describes the parents, as war criminals. It's wrong, we're never shown what they did, at least in the beginning, so they can't really be construed as war criminals if they don't put emphasis on their said crimes. It'd be more apt to call them terrorists. But even then we as the readers aren't really privy to their motivations nor does our protagonist have any of their own, they're just dragged along by the plot. To tame a Fire is a serviceable read, but I don't think I'd recommend it.

I definitely dropped points for art on this one. A lot of the vague effects and 3D supported backgrounds are fine, and the lumpy suggestions of clothes are passable, but the faces are skewed all over the place - and when they aren't it's because the artist has literally mirrored their features. I've seen a fair few series start out sketchy in th eart department, and generally it's extremely satisfying to see the vast improvement the artist achieves as the story progresses. The artist of To Tame a Fire (who is also the author) is hobbling around on crutches so hard they're practically digging themselves into the ground. Idk why, but I just find it painful to look at. I dropped this at chapter 17, but I checked the art at ch29 just to be sure, and it remains as skewif as the first chapter. Bad art would be tolerable if there was a great story, but it's just average. It feels like every american YA fantasy romance meets the tropes of chosen one underdog's integration to superpower organisation. Maybe I just didn't like it because every time I see the two protagonists together it gives off Bella and Edward vibes. I'm not sure why - their characters shouldn't have anything to do with each other - but that just makes it worse in a way.

The story of this webtoon is pretty decent. Pacing of the plot is a bit slow and there is also some good drama in it. Art is also decent but it is not for everyone. This webtoon is more recommended for people who like shoujo genre but want a modern day action drama for a change.
