Kigurumi-kun

Every Wednesday, there's a man in an animal costume who hands out balloons to kids in the park. The man also hands a balloon to a university student, Shimaki Yuudai, who is on his way to his part time job. Shimaki, while feeling inconvenienced, was unable to refuse. One day, however, he finds the words "I like you" written on a piece of paper attached to the balloon...

Many of these single-volume yaoi manga I've read seem to follow a very similar story arc--building up to the sex scene in the final chapter. I realize that for the avid readers of this genre, the sex scene is probably 50% of the reason for reading the series at all, but it still feels like a lazy way to create a climax. This series also has an emotional climax where Hayama's anxiety is assuaged, but those scenes honestly just made me annoyed by Hayama as a character even more. Fe's emotionally needy and hyper-dependent on Shima-kun (a.k.a. Maggie) for all of feir self-worth. Though at least Hayama had a personality. In contrast, Shima-kun felt very bland. The drama with Kinoshita was written poorly. The author wanted to create a plot twist type of moment, but ended up forcing Kinoshita to act in a very weird way in order to do so. The artwork is pretty bad, in my opinion. The animal faces aren't cute. The human faces are also not cute, but I don't find that as offensive as the animal faces not being cute. Also, I find it weird how the artist continues to draw Hayama with a dog head for the chibi icons and for some "cute" emoting even after Hayama has stopped wearing the costume. Oh, speaking of which, I also thought it was weird that the central hook of the story and what set it apart from other stories (the animal costume) was just straight up dropped halfway through. I realize that the costume was a defense mechanism because Hayama didn't initially feel comfortable interacting with Shima-kun without it, so it makes sense that it would be dropped eventually. But the rabbit/dog face was kinda this manga's whole shtick, so it still felt weird. Like, Kamibukuro-kun wa Koishiteru did it right and maintained the paperbag thing up until right before the end and had the final climaxes involve the discarding of the paperbag.
