The series follows the adventures of Sabu, a young Edo bakufu investigator traveling with the blind master swordsman Ichi. In their travels, they assist the common people in solving mysteries and righting wrongs (usually committed by bandits or corrupt officials). Sabu is engaged to Midori, the daughter of his boss, who works as a police officer for the Tokugawa shogunate.

An officer is falsely accused of setting on fire a forest he was supposed to protect. While he is under trial in Kyoto, his family receives an order to leave their mansion and to surrender to the new owner of the land. The family flees, but they end up being tricked and separated by bandits. Sold as slaves, the two children start living a bitter new reality where they must struggle to survive doing harsh physical labor. Anju and her younger brother Zushio try to protect each other as they wonder if they will ever see their parents again.

In the Edo period, there was a shrine maiden called "Itsukihime" in the mountain village of Kadono. Jinta, a young man who acts as the shrine maiden's guardian despite being a stranger, encounters a mysterious demon who speaks of the far future in the forest where he went to defeat it. From Edo to the Heisei era, this is a fantasy series about a demon man who travels through time while continuously questioning the meaning of wielding a sword.

The beginning of Hakuouki series, this installment tells the story of Ryunosuke Ibuki, a boy who loathes samurai while also being the son of a samurai. After being robbed and left to die on his way to Kyoto, Ryunosuke is rescued by the Roshigumi leader, Kamo Serizawa. Serizawa treats Ryunousuke as a servant and calls him a dog. Meanwhile, Ryunousuke watches as the Roshigumi slowly unravels around him.
