Music Discussion Thread

i love the music. but i have some minor criticisms. the lyrics are a little confusing as previously noted, and... can't believe i'm saying this, but i think this particular song could have done with harsher vocals. there's this dissonance between the lyrics being passionate and the singer sounding bored. but neither of those things change the fact that it's an absolute banger. and, across all genres of music, it's hardly uncommon for lyrics to not be particularly coherent.

Well, Chuck is approaching 60 lol. His voice went from a higher raw style with shrieks to lower and a bit more guttural throughout Testament's career and I actually really dig the lower end vocals.

Testament can sing about tuna pizza for all I care, I'm here for the aggressive riffs and Skolnick leads :D
Meant to say something earlier about this, but I am really fucking sad and angry. This unfortunately totes the line of going too far me, being part of a literal attack on democracy where someone actually fucking DIED. As much as I like Iced earth's music, it is going to be very, very hard for me to listen to their music now in good conscience.

I need a drink man.
Can I join? Smashed already but I could go for a rant.

I knew he was pretty... right off centre, but I didn't know he lost the plot that much (apart from believing in aliens or whatever). I assume it's more a function of geography than political stances that The Nuge and Dave Mustaine weren't there along with him.
...What's wrong with believing in aliens?

I have tried two musical experiments today, and the results were not favourable:
1. Listening to Iced Earth for idk how long. It failed. It wasn't Matt Barlow singing and I could see the douchebag radiation emanating from wacko-Jon. Fat guitar sound as always, but Iced Earth always felt like a C-list band to me. US heavy metal is something I've a tough time appreciating in general.
2. Listening to K-rock. I gave up after three videos. I hate rockabilly no matter which language in which it's sung. Modern rock tend to suck as well, so I dunno why I even tried to begin with.

Last week's musical experiment was a success, though: I'm now listening to Blind Guardian's older stuff. Their live videos are a hoot (Hansi is just too damn dorky, so you can't help but laugh with him) except for the fact that André Olbrich gave up his schmexy red ESP Horizon for some shitty Ibanez.

Next musical misadventure? Iunno, you guys have any suggestions?

Last time Angela Merkel was on TV I'm pretty sure her hologram failed, I could see the slits in her eyes and scaly skin! The reptilians walk among us, wake up!?
Pffft, we all Merkel is a cyborg sent from the future to stop Ray Kurzweil's predictions about the singularity from coming true. We all know Kohl was the last lizard people among the German chancellors (Schröder was just a paid Antifa actor).

Think the current Australian punk/rock scene is pretty fun right now. You can still hear the AC/DC/Rose Tattoo influence in some of them but overall it's pretty great stuff.

I'd recommend Viagra Boys as well but with them coming from Stockholm you probably are aware of them already.

The first one was a hoot because I thought it was gonna be a cover of Shonen Knife's "Banana Chips", but it was fun even so.

The second one had an appropriate amount on reverb on the vocals and enough drive and anger to sustain me for a few days.

The last one was just eh, I can't stand laid-back punk. Play fast or die!

Overall, this was a success, and Imma check for more smoko breaks in the future!

________
Of course I know of Viagra Boys, but one should be wary of anything coming out of Stockholm...

I obviously decided to check out Bitch Hawk (also from Stockholm) instead. Idk, maybe need to give them some repeat listens.

Dune Rats remind me of 90s alt-rock warmness but I like the other two bands more as well, especially Chats.

Bitch Hawk sounds pretty good to me actually.

Honestly Australia to me has a tradition of some the most fucking amazing punk bands back in the old days too:

My favourite modern Australian band is still probably the Drones although they're more like a mesh of different influences from blues to folk and weirder post-punk bands with the experimentation:

I was listening to Tropical Fuck Storm a few days ago and they're partly made up of Drones members. Really need to get into more of these bands.

Aussies have so many great bands and movies but I never hear anyone talk about them. Grown to really love their artistic contributions this past year.

so about the whole "i can't believe i'm saying this" thing, if you remember, back when @SpiritOfCoffeeMug introduced me to heavy metal, i was like "woah! this is metal? where's the screaming? i actually like this!", and then i looked for metal with clean vocals on the net and found that there's about a hundred bands i should check out, most of which i've not checked out yet.

anyway, my point was that i only recently discovered that i do in fact have a degree of tolerance for harsher vocals. i'm not entirely sure what determines whether i can tolerate it or not. i think that it has to have rhythm. and the lyrics have to be intelligible but that goes for all genres.

i made these 2 playlists with the idea that a certified metalhead could shed some light on this whole thing:

  1. Tolerable Growling and Screeching
  2. Intolerable Screeching (or Gurgling)

what if Testament sang the praises of pineapple pizza?

Well I am a metalhead and I do enjoy both clean and harsh vocals but I am extremely particular and picky about the latter. Like firstly it must be intelligible as you said and I also prefer it to be a more slower macho style as well. Though rapid fire delivery can be good as well like in my fav sub genre Nu- Metal and the like.
Ultimately it does come down to taste. I hate screeching and shrieking noises and don't listen to those types. Though there are sometimes exceptions. Its hard to describe metal vocals cause while to the casual non-metal loving music listener it may just all sound like screaming but to a metalhead its incredibly varied.

I would say you are indeed correct in that in order to enjoy it, it should have melody and "rhythm". At least this is the case for me and I am feeling you as well.
You seem to be mostly checking out older 80's/90's bands from what I've seen whereas I'm more into modern stuff from the 2000's and up.
From the lists you posted I have only listened to and enjoyed songs from Soilwork, Arch Enemy and Sonic Syndicate. But just a few from each and I wouldn't consider myself a real fan of any. Arch Enemy though is a good example for the "heaviest" music I am willing to tolerate. Melodic Death Metal is my limit, I personally don't like standard Death Metal and I hate Black Metal.

I think I might be able to help ya find stuff you would like if you gimme something to work with that I know of... Like here. What you think of these songs? I think you might like em. Or maybe not. Depends on how much you like more rock leaning metal as well.

I have lots of heavier stuff... lighter stuff... I know alot about stuff I don't even like. So if you gimme some feedback on what you like or dislike I may be able to help ya find stuff you'll enjoy budd ^^

Metal isn't a science, man. Just listen and the stuff you like will come to you. Funnily enough you'll most likely find your tolerance level only rising for more and more heavy, brutal shit the more you listen (and if you don't that's fine). At the end of the day all that matters is if the music makes your hair stand on end or grabs you in any way.

The only thing I still can't tolerate is pig squeals (breeeee) and all that super guttural stuff (exceptions are Cannibal Corpse and some grind bands), everything else is pretty much fair game these days. That said I enjoy maybe two bands on those lists (Testament and Meshuggah) xD my metal preferences are waaay back in the 80s and early/mid-90s.

They'd be dead to me immediately.

I feel old because a friend said I only listen to old man punk. Damnit! He's only one year younger than me anyway, so I shouldn't care.

Who are the hip US punk groups these days? Good Charlotte? idk man I'm so out of the loop.
Bitch Hawk sounds pretty good to me actually.
Yeah, well, they say they're thrash-influenced so go figure.

Powder Monkeys were ace, even if the song was a bit too long.

this selection is great! i really like all these tracks. although i don't like Red Cold River as much as the others. for one thing, it's grammatically incorrect. it should be Cold Red River. or Run Red, Cold River. other than that, it's just not as interesting as the others somehow. it's a 3.79 out of 5. or something. there's a toss-up between Animal I Have Become and Psychosocial. Nightmare just about edges out Psychosocial and Animal I Have Become to claim the number 1 spot. i'm generally averse to f-bombs and other profane language, but it didn't bother me too much in the case of Nightmare. so the overall ranking is as follows:

  1. Nightmare (4.2/5)
  2. Animal I Have Become, Psychosocial (4/5)
  3. Coming Down (3.84/5)
  4. Red Cold River (3.79/5)

the overall sound just becomes more fun and more interesting as one goes from 4 to 1.

far as giving you more to work with goes, my top 8 metal tracks are possibly:

  1. Lord of this World (Black Sabbath)
  2. Fragile Dreams (Anathema)
  3. Tämän Taivaan Alla (Kotiteollisuus)
  4. Empty (Anathema)
  5. Neon Knights (Black Sabbath)
  6. Stand My Ground (Within Temptation)
  7. Lonely is the Word (Black Sabbath)
  8. Return to Serenity (Testament)

but i was looking into melodeath cos i wanted heavier stuff, and i will be looking into thrash next

finding music i like is great n' all, but i really wish i knew exactly what factors there are that determine whether i like a piece of music or not. so metal's not being a science is a bit of a bummer lol.

I'm a bit late with my "rest in peace" posts, but RIP MF DOOM. I didn't get to listen his stuff a lot before he passed away, but what I heard I definitely enjoyed!

And of course RIP Alexi Laiho. His passing has been especially hard pill to swallow for me since Children of Bodom's music has been a big part of my life ever since elementary school and the first album I heard from them "Hatebreeder" was one of my gateways for melodic death metal, death metal and even black metal. I'm really glad I managed to see them live a few times, since in case of many bands and artists I didn't get to see them live even once before it was too late already.

I'm genuinely really glad I managed to introduce you to Kotiteollisuus and get you into metal, since I'm usually the end that gets introduced to more music nowadays lol
