Daily Anime Thoughts

True. In this case I feel like it really is a censorship thing, however, because in the author's other novel even during the sex scenes they didn't really call penises anything other than innuendos etc lol. It's China, remember: China does not like porn. Or gays.
Yeah, it was meant more as a joke than a rebuttal. China is horrible to homosexuals and the worst case of censorship next to North Korea. Friend of mine had his book literally burned because it mentioned a historical fact of China occupying something. Like, it got printed and the factory workers had to carry everything into the yard and had to burn it in front of the censors.
Anything that doesn't fit socially is treated the same. One of the reasons I'll never put a foot into that country, even though I actually like the culture.

Yeah I've really heard quite a few bad things about China, and this idea they have execution vans is just scary as shit to me. Honestly, I think the reason I haven't seen a lot of great Chinese media in anime is because of the heavy amount of censoring the government does on what people can or can't say or show which I'm sure would just stifle creativity. Or at least, that feels like part of the problem.

Hate to get political here, but this is the true meaning of "pc". Being politically correct means not going against the demanded line of the ruling party. Authoritarians then turn that shit around and accuse others of it, and as you say, this is pure poison for creativity and the arts. Like hell I would criticize someone when some thugs with black masks are waiting for me then next week.

Ah yeah I get you lol, my bad.

It's weird to me because these BL novels clearly have sex in them but you just... can't call a penis a penis. Also apparently the author had to rewrite part of one of her other novels because it was too explicit, so.

Also there's a scene where the protagonist is monologuing about how he doesn't know how sex between men works and he thought it was just hands and mouth and you're done and then his husband (sorry, cultivation partner) sticks a finger in his ass and he's very confused. But he goes with it.

It'll be interesting to see if this novel goes anywhere beyond kissing and awkward boners. (It probably will, I'm only on chapter 148 out of 244.)

I know it's a typo, but I had to imagine what you're doing with the poor moth.

I can imagine that a lot of these descriptions are for readers that aren't used to gay stories, so they have to describe it in more naive terms. Because the example you gave sounds like the insert character for the character not having a clue about gay sex because the readers have no clue about gay sex. So that the author can lead the readers and the character together to the rainbowland. Just sounds like that writing technique. Who knows.

It's probably a bit of both, lol. In Mo Dao Zu Shi, the protagonist takes forever to realise he's gay and likes his friend because he spends most of his time flirting with pretty girls.

In Heaven Official's Blessing, the protagonist spends 800+ years being pure™ (and pretending he's impotent) because of his method of cultivation and can't so much as hold hands with a girl or he'll *~*ruin*~* it. It doesn't take him too long to realise he likes the demon king he's been hanging around with and his only complaint is that his teacher never taught him methods for defending himself against hot men, only women, lol.

I think the protagonist in Scum Villian knows all about sex though, but I haven't read much of that one yet.

DAT: I was thinking about it while going through the Octopath Traveler soundtrack, but what is up with that dang Japanese-y take on western orchestral music? It's really common in JRPGs and in anime with a pseudo-western fantasy setting. Like, you could have heard these tunes for the first time in a setting where nothing else would indicate its origin, yet I'm pretty sure most of you would recognize it as a Japanese thing despite there being no traditional Japanese instruments in it.

You know you've heard this style of music in dozens of anime. Are there any music experts here that can pick out whatever the trends and patterns used are that makes the style so distinct to JRPGs/fantasy anime? My best guess is that it has something to do with the general dominance of bowed string instruments.

First, thanks for this. I've never heard of this game, but have to check out the ost now. I think @Cherstal really hit on a good explanation for the recognizability of this soundtrack music with the repetitive catchy motifs. I'm no music expert, but the mention of a heavy use of stringed instruments leads me to point out that this allows alternate tuning- which our western ears would read as slightly foreign sounding, and which Eastern music is known for. I've certainly noticed melodic patterns and musical progressions that western composers just don't do- it's not that they can't, but they don't think that way. It's also possible that there is a preference for certain key signatures and timings. Something that was pointed out to me is that a lot of this music has a very martial sound- that first song you linked is certainly that way. You can really notice it in Joe Hisaishi's music- I'm sure all of this combines into a sound that is both familiar and yet not, to our ears.

That first video reminded me of this song- you could waltz to this, so it's in a triple meter time.

DAT: With the new season I forgot all about Dororo, because none of the new shows are on Prime (except Sarazanmai, but I started watching it really late, and on Crunchyroll). I am fixing this.

Reducing my anime load is probably one of the best decisions I've made. I'm only watching a handful of stuff this season, but even the ones I don't love at least don't make me hate myself for watching. That dumb ecchi show about the teachers is actually pretty inoffensive for the most part. Plus, less anime gives me time to think about and rewatch Sarazanmai.

Stay strong and you might defeat the demon.

DAT: @Franconator paragraph about Grave of the Fireflies had me thinking about In this Corner of the World that I watched on Netflix last summer. Gave me a lot of GotF vibes. Definitely nowhere near as...grim, but it has moments to rival Grave, specifically after the USAAF firebombs Kure for the first time. I really enjoy those dramas with the Pacific War in the background, as opposed to the main event. I just wish there were more of them, or that the anime industry writ large took dramatic character studies more seriously.
