Sakurasou no Pet na Kanojo (or "The Pet Girl of Sakurasou") took me by surprise. My friend recommended the show to me quite a while back and after putting it off for a bit, I decided to give it a try.

Story

When the show starts it seems to be another, slightly above average show. It was a little bit funny here and there, had an interesting concept or two, but all in all I did not expect anything outstanding from it.

Then the show continued.

The show got funnier as I understood how each character worked and I came to understand them more. Then the show gets serious, while still remaining touching. Overall I did not expect this at all.

Animation

The animation is just great. Nothing revolutionary, but it does what it needs to do very well. You can see this kind of well done animation in most newer shows around now (around 2013). It does what it needs to do, and in a few rare cases goes above that when needed.

Sound

The music and sound effects are spot on, again, fufilling their purpose and sometimes going just above that. The one thing that really stands out are the voices of the characters, which stand out and resonate very well with what they are trying to do.

Characters

If this show shines somewhere, it is here. The characters are... people. They are crazy, zany, different, unique, and more real than almost any other show out there.

Many of them have strange tendencies, quirks, or attitudes, which are all have a reason to be. They all have things they are good at, dispite whether they know it or not, and they all react very organically to each other. Some clash, love, hate, turn to, shy away from one another all very logically and emotionally.

Hopefully you will grow to love (and maybe hate) some of these characters as much as I did and still do.

Overall/Conclusion

The show is worth the watch for anyone who likes a touching story and a bit of comedy, but be forewarned. The story gets very sad, depressing, and quite touching at parts. I cried a bit when watching the second to last episode, along with a few others along the way.

The show is really worth sticking through, dispite its slightly lackluster begining.

...and I have to bring out one last thing that always must be addressed (but not spoiledif possible). The ending. The ending is good, conclusive, and well though out... but

[SPOILER WARNING]
It is not a big spoiler, but the show kind of ends on the whole "and everything continues the way it was" type of ending, although it was finite enough that it did not upset me too much.

[SPOILER ENDING]

Alternate Recommendations

If you enjoyed this show, want to see others like it, or want to know what it is similar to I will point you towards these other shows [shows are normally order or relevance]:

Angel Beats- Like this show it as interesting characters, is very funny, and gets more and more touching the father you go.

Working- Another comedy which falls less into the "drama" side and more in the side of "interesting characters and a good amount of laughs." If you liked the comedic style of Sakurasou no Pet na Kanojou then you will most likely enjoy this.

The iDOLM@STER- Again, has all very unique characters, but by comparison is must more of a feel-good show, as it very rarely gets sad.

Clannad- Fits so well to "funny show that turns sad" your tears of laughter will turn into tears of sorrow. Be warned about this show, it is a great work of literature.

I wasn't sure  if Ishould watch this or not especially I'm not into romance anime but I'm kinda glad its not onl romance but also comedy. You'd somehow could see some usual things in the story, but each character's story and personality backed it up. the stpry is the one of the usual things you'd see in an anime but somehow parts of it made it interesting for me to continue watching. Not only that we always feel like talented people are so great that we lost the motivation. we always feel like that and in this anime it showed me lots of things. talented or not. there are things we are good at and things we are bad at. I really like anime like these and not only it entertains me but also motivates me. I rarely cried on an anime but I cried. This anime made me feel a lot of emotions and it is fun to watch. The animation of this anime is also great. I like the artstyle. I'm glad I watched this.

An extremely slow paced romantic comedy about a bunch of teenagers living in a boarding school for teenagers that don't quite meet certain expectations.

Sorata and Shiina are the 2 main protagonists of the series where Sorata is basically Shiina's caretaker. Shiina would forget to breathe if Sorata didn't tell her to do so which basically makes her feel like a puppet that Sorata has to carry around.

As the show progresses they'll start building feeling for each other. Shiina doesn't understand the feelings she's going through and Sorata is jealous of how amazing Shiina is. Now add a third wheel called Nanami, who has been in love with Sorata for a while and you have the main blueprint for this show.

There are 2 other relationships in the show but only 1 is really worth mentioning which is Jin and Misaki. Jin loves Misaki but he likes her to stay as carefree as she is so he decides to fuck her sister instead who is well aware of the situation. After that he basically starts messing with several different girls but Misaki doesn't doubt him for a second.

I found it hard to relate to the cast. There are moments that are entertaining but overall it's just an okay show with a too slow of a pace. If it wasn’t for Misaki it'd be like watching paint dry. It’s a good watch for a sunday afternoon.

Ending Rating: 90%

Short Review:

Sakurasaou no Pet na Kanajo or The Pet Girl of Sakurasou is a very good anime. The mixture of comedy and drama are well done. With some romance to make the viewers stick to the end. The anime might be slow paced at some time but still its worth it. You'll know how hard life really is, the real bonds between friends and overcoming the challenges of every life. Sakurasou is worth your time.
