"The following review contains spoilers!"

Best Phantom Thief anime of 2014!
Magic Kaito 1412 is remake of Detective conan /case closed spin off tv special magic kaito.

The Story: Kaitou kuroba a teenager who performs magic trick for fun at school and to mess with his friend Aoko nakamori. One day Kaitou kuroba stumbles through a trap door in his room and discovers that his father, Toichi Kuroba, was the original Kaitou Kid. Kaitou put on his father’s costume to discover the identity of the new Kaitou Kid,Turns out to be his father’s old assistant Konosuke Jii. Jii tells Kaitou that his father had been murdered eight years ago, and that he had dressed as the Kid to lure his father’s killer. So Kaitou becomes the Kid as he is more skilled and young than Jii.Kaitou finds out that killers are after a pandora gem and so he vow to find the Pandora gem first and destroy it.

The Animation is the best part of the anime as they made alot of changes to visual to match today’s standards and modernizing outdated technologies in anime.

here are some comparisons betweeen detective conan and magic kaito 1412.

The Open theme is great and BGM fits the anime quite well.

The Characters lack development as each episode repeats a pattern as a new gem is put in a exhibit or a royalty comes to japan with 1 or someone challenges kid -> then he goes to steal it -> police fail to catch him -> kid finds out that its not the pandora gem -> he returns it back to police. But still each character is fun with kaitou performing new tricks , inspector ginzo nakamori being fooled and the episodes with conan trying to stop kid.

Overall the anime feels repetitive but with all new magic tricks and when conan comes to stop kaitou kid from stealing the gems, which are very entertaining to watch dectective vs phantom thief action. If you are looking for a magician+thief action anime this is for you :D and This is a must watch for detective conan fans.

My Favorite Quote - Kaitou Kid : Ladies and gentlemen!,I bring you marvelous illusions that will make tonight sparkle!

love love love. this is the flip side of detective conan. its mystery and humor. watch it, you must watch it.

the characters are great. the detectives that go after kaito include conan. the daughter of the police chief annoys me a bit but overall the characters are interesting.

the sound fits the anime. half mystery half mocking.

the story, well sometimes it seems there and sometimes not, but overall its good.

Lets start with saying that it is more a entertaining series than actually a good series.

You follow a thief while he steals juwels to avenge his father, who created the identety of The Phantom Thief and was the best magician in the world but has 'died' (you never know with magicians) 8 years before the series starts. This new Phantom Thief uses magic tricks and illusions to escape from the squad constructed to him.

Most of the episodes start with a bit of recorded advise from his father which he uses later in the episode, then you get a heist or a cute character moment (with Kaito being overpowered) and later he steals the jewel he wanted to steal. That is almost every episode in a nutshell.

It would become boring to see the same story a few times over , you say?
Actually not, it is not about that Kaito steals the juwel, but how he does it. He refers to himself as a showman or magician and makes every heist a extrodinairy preformance, for the officers, the onwatchers and the viewer. Which, together with his cheeky personality and his fear for fish is really fun to watch.

So watch it if you want magic, cheeky kids and fun.

The downside is that, like in Detective Conan, physics aren't quit aqurate, to say mildly...
Kaito keeps about 2 or 3 under his standard clothes and somehow changes within half a second and he somehow he can walk on a rope with rolerskates.
The cops who follow him are to obedient to there hot-headed leader who gets irrational when angry, which is something Kaito uses a lot. This inspector is by coincidance also the father of his best friend and he doesn't mind if Kaito comes to the prepperations of the securety (of the juwel he ancounced to steal).

So definatly don't watch it if you want your science to be acurate.
(But you are watching anime, the science is never acurate in anime, otherwise you'd be watching Sherlock Homes and not Detective Conan)

I became aware of the character of Kid Kaito from his association with the Detective Conan: Case Closed phenomenon (running since 1996 [TMS Entertainment], 1108 episodes to date, plus movies, plus specials, plus hours and hours of viewing [review up and coming ... eventually]).  It was a typical detective vs. phantom thief episode where the usual draw occurred (phantom thief fails to get the goods/detective fails to capture thief).  I became curious about Magic Kaito 1412 (A-1 Pictures, 2014-15) and plugged in some time to watch the series.

I've been intrigued by the phantom thief genre since viewing Saint Tail (TMS Entertainment, 1995-96, so this production company knows how to dabble in things of mystery) and Phantom Thief Jeanne (Toei Animation, 1999-2000).  Then later, I learned that guys could do the artistic filching of heavily protected property with Joker (Shin-Ei Animation 2014-16).  So I understood the basics of legerdemain in the challenge of announcing the crime to be committed with the resourcefulness to overcome all the obstacles thrown up by the rich dudes that underestimated the phantom thief.

Magic Kaito 1412 features the essence of the magician.  In fact, MC Kaito Kuroba is the son of a renowned magician/phantom thief Touichi.  Father was murdered (more or less) ten years prior, and Kaito takes on the phantom thief mantle to avenge the death.  What follows is a stream of disconnected adventures where Kaito seeks Pandora, a gem holding the secret of eternal life.  This was the cause of Touichi's death (more or less).

Along with the challenge of stealing gems surrounded with swarms of law-officers led by the relentless (but bungling) Inspector Ginzo Nakamori.  Kaito keeps the inspector on his radar because he is good friends (more or less) of the inspector's daughter Aoko.  But Kaito is a mischievous loner who treats friends like nemeses.  A nemesis of some sort will show up constantly.  Akako Koizumi is a beautiful witch whose talent for dark magic resents the illusions of the magician Kaito.  Saguru Hakuba is a classmate with incredible detection skills and can come close to discovering Kaito's identity as Kid Kaito Phantom Thief.  And then, there's Conan Edogawa, the detective with the body of a boy but the mind of an adult (you've probably heard of him).  Three episodes are classic battles between boy detective and master of illusion phantom thief, with the outcome those 'draws.'  Kaito gains the gem du jour and hands it to Conan who always knew the method Kaito used to pull off the heist.

The ending was just another instance of too complicated of a storyline producing too much excitement which causes too many 'but what about ...' holes in plot.  The sudden appearance of Kaito's globetrotting mother and possible encounter with that 'more or less father' who had been instructing Kaito in the fine points of the magician's trade via LP's played on juke box.  Too much unexplained material.

Magic Kaito 1412 used the character designs of Detective Conan far too much (I've just noticed I'm using 'too' overly much ... too bad).  Kaito's girlfriend Aoko looks like Ran Mori, Ginzo Nakamori like Kogoro Mori.  The connection between these two animes can explain the common style, which was functional for the purposes of story-telling.  But the night-time heists limited the color pallet to darksome hues, and the spectacular effects of the phantom thief was a battle of black and white.  For the music, the lively tunes that came up in the first half of the season contrasted with the more introspective tunes of the second half.  It's as if the series wished us to catch the excitement of the perfect heist followed up by the rationale of a youth committing himself to a criminal career.  The cheering for the phantom thief who could penetrate all defenses was a little off-the-mark.  Even Inspector Nakamori bemoaned the facts that the police were the unappreciated underdogs.

With an ending that defies all imagination to find any sense, one can catch the essence of Kid Kaito.  Flippant.  Annoying.  Arrogant.  But capable of performing the impossible.  The type of phantom thief you can learn to loath.  Where did father Touichi go wrong (more or less)?
