Joe Maya has just turned 16, and on the eve of ditching his test, he and his brother stumble upon a sight to remember: aliens – the first that humans have ever encountered – have appeared in the sky in the midst of an intense battle. After running into a beautiful alien princess, Joe finds himself inside of a giant robot that he can seemingly control with his mind; and thus, set forth a series of events which will change his and his friends’ lives forever. With the help of his friends and their newfound "steeds", Joe will help fight evil and save the beautiful princess.

In the year 1999, a group of 5 young men return to Earth after a space voyage, only to find it ravaged by nuclear war. After encountering the alien race known as the Galra, the 5 youths end up on the planet Altea, and learn that the 5 lion robots that Golion was split into are in hibernation in various parts of Altea. Somehow, they must reunite the lions and form Golion, the only hope for the human race.

The story takes place in a universe where countless parallel universes are known to exist. There is always a link — called "Prism" — connecting the modern world and these parallel worlds, and sometimes energy and substance come through. One day, monsters, known as "Eight", come from a parallel world and begin attacking. Humanity begins its counterattack using a power called "Skuld," which harnesses the power of tomorrow. The government gathers Skuld users into an army known as "Norn," but the Eight still wreak destruction over the years. Then, a boy named Asuma who can use an ancient weapon is discovered.
