Title: Kure-nai
Airs: 04.04.2008
Episodes: -
Genre: -

Story: Based on a light novel series by Katayama Kentarou, illustrated by Yamamoto Yamato.

16-year-old Shintaro Kurenai is a Mediator - a specialist in settling squabbles between people. Despite his youth and easygoing nature, he is a man of some skills when it comes to protecting both his clients and his client’s interests. And then one day, he is approached by the daughter of a rich and powerful family asking him to be her bodyguard, which somehow ends up with him having a seven-year-old fan, landlord and self-proclaimed fiancé.

Shintaro Kurenai finds himself living in run-down tenement with Murasaki Kuhouin (his new 7-year-old apprentice and landlord) and several other eccentric ladies. His childhood friend (Ginko) acts as his Mediator booking agent. Then there is his (adopted) older sister and martial arts teacher, Yuuno, who does not like to see her Kurenai troubled by any of the difficulties of his Mediator assignments. And Yuuno’s younger (7-year-old) sister, Chi-chan (Houdsuki Chidzuru) also seems to take a troubling worry when her ‘onii-chan’ gets beaten up by Yuuno or his assignments.

So I randomly saw this and figured "What they hey, might as well see what series are starting this season and see how they are." I hadn't heard or seen anything about it before I watched it. I must say though I am quite impressed by the 1st episode. The animation is very good and the characters spark interest. The 1st episode is kind of confusing (not a bad confusing) but more like leaves you wondering about peoples past's and other things.

This one kind of reminds me of Seirei no Moribito a bit.
The main character (Kurenai) is going to protect a young girl and she is from a very rich family, which almost seems like royalty. This Anime seems to be set around this current time period but has a feel of traditional Japan because of the rich family air that surrounds several of the characters.

Anyway, it looks like it's going to be quite interesting and I'm looking forward to the next episode.

Post thoughts if you would.

Thanks,

Since someone started this I'll just drag my post over from the what I started watching thread.

I started Kure-nai today. I'm EXTREMELY glad my fear that the jump to anime didn't result in a lolicon show. In fact, they reasonably stuck to the manga's mood (and I feel made it a little bit more somber). Shinkurou and Ginko are dead on, and Benika is quite good too. Yuuno's a bit off though. And Murasaki is excellent except for her VA sounds a bit too old. Now as long as Chidzuru doesn't become pedo bait I'm happy.

Also, while it is out of chronological order, I do like that they started Murasaki's story early. Now I'm wondering they'll bring up how Ginko, Shinkurou, and Benika first met early.

This might jump up as high as Allison (since the first half will be without Lilia) on my "to watch this season" list.

This anime rteminded me of serei no moribito also. I'm glad I'm not the only one! I am going to watch a few more episodes to see where this will be going and then decide if I'm going to watch the full series.

Yeah, I like what I've seen so far. I'm glad that the protagonist, the boy, is a fairly perceptive person, and I hope (like purplemo) that his relationship with the little girl develops more along the lines of Aishiteruze Baby than Kadomo no Jenkan (sp?).

How they handle Yuuna's daily kicking Shikurou's ass and Chi-chan and Murasaki's interplay will tell you whether or not this'll stick to being serious with some minor bits of humor (like Darker than Black), or if it'll devolve into a basic shounen romance comedy. Looks like the former so far.

purple, dude, you so underetimated the lolicon community. All I'm hearing about this show is how much lolicons are being pandered to and tons of gifs and all that XD

Well I'm not surprised at all the lolicon community is into Shinkurou boning Chidzuru and Murasaki. After all, I've run across enough of my share of Kino and Miyazaki pics and such, for a small example.

There is some definite usual things from male harems in Kure-nai such as Yuuno's kicking Shinkurou's ass, the tension between Yuuno and Ginko, and how clingy Chidzuru and Murasaki are, but from what I've seen of the show and manga, it's not likely the kind of thing to get you off, even if Shinkurou was a girl. :p

Lolicons probably enjoy anything that has cute little girls in it. But that doesn't mean the show is consciously trying to sexualize things. It's the lolicon mind that turns something cute and innocent into something twisted.

I regret that some otherwise good anime try to pander to a lolicon complex. That's one aspect of japanese culture that is hard for me to understand.

Episode 2
It's pretty obvious they'd settle down the pace a little after having quite the content-filled starting episode. I liked this episode aswell, and the show looks promising. I also liked the way they portaited Shinkurou when he was fighting. That face accompanied with the music made some impact on me.

BUT,
seriously, what's up with that bathing scene? It's loli-fanservice no matter how you look at it.

Enjoyed the first episode a lot. Murasaki reminds me a lot of Chagum from Seirei no Moribito - I think it's because of the mature voice acting style.

Good one to follow, although very odd premise.

I think the "loli" aspect of this show is getting too much attention. What about the superb animation? The detailed artwork? The masterful storytelling? I dislike the word "lolicon." Just because it has a different name doesn't mean it's not still pedophilia. I am enjoying the great production quality of this show but all I hear is loli loli loli... It would be nice if the studios stopped pandering to this fetish (half the shows this season feature underage romance) but until they do let's just GET OVER IT and enjoy what could be the best series of spring!

Those are things you take for granted when you for example say "good show", that usually includes most parts of it.

I mean, there's always something to complain at, whereas usual shows have bits of unnecessary ecchi, shows like Kurenai does attract a certain audience, that's something you can't deny. If that audience is watching for a certain something the studio will usually give it to them, even if it's totally unnecessary(once again, ecchi. or, for example erogames, a route usually has a hentai scene, but that scene is pretty much unrelated to the story, and just there for one reason; to please the audience that's playing for that).

Now, seeing Kurenai does attract the certain audience that's perhaps not watching the story for it's content, but for yet another loli(I would think they have enough of these by now, but I guess it's our massconsuming society ;_;).

That's why it brings the fear that the studio might ruin the show by pleasing that audience, instead of the one just watching for what the show actually is. After all, what would you prefer, 15 minutes of Kurenai and 5 minutes of lolifanservice, or 20 minutes of Kurenai?

On a side note: I love the way the animation flows in this show, no more 10 second frames for faces!

Yeah! Vonpost, I agree. The animation is superb, and I love the character designs. This anime, if my suspicions are correct, is basically a cross between Seirei no Moribito and Darker than Black. It really has a DtB feel to it.

My favourite thing about Kurenai, actually, is the dialogue. Absolutely adore every time Murasaki and the main character talk.

you guys are high. Everyone knows it's a good show, but we take it for granted because we've seen a llot of good shows. It needs to be ZOMG before we stop joking around about it.

After watching the first two episodes, it looks like it will probably have the most depth of any of the new shows.

That statement is for the show only, because the opening and ending might be the worst fit of any of the anime i've ever watched.

I thought the first episode was interesting, the second episode hooked me. Added to my new watching list this season. Yah, glad I skipped past the Op/Ed or would be missing out on a potentially good show.

the hair detail and animation is awesome! actually, the animation overall is truly fantastic! even the computer animation do look great! though, there arent many :)

cant wait for ep03!

P.S. but the op sucks :(

I'm up to episode three. I am loving this show so far. It is a breath of fresh air into a very saturated market of sexualized aoe type characters. This show is neither loli, nor moe. This is going into an old archetype about the hard ass loner (although this particular case is a bit clueless) that winds up doing the right thing even if they are being payed for it.

The art style in this show is fantastic. I especially like the character designs and the intro animation. To the people making the loli argument. The little girl is actually acting like a little girl would (save for her precociousness and even that is relatively realistic). I think we are so used to seeing the candy coated big eyed and harmless version of little girls in anime that some fans can't recognize the way a real little girl would look and act. A good example of this would be
when she is dressing herself. It is not drawn out or made fanservicy in any way. I have taken care of 6 and 7 year olds and they fidget with their clothes that exact same way. If anything the director or character designer payed attention to real life reference material.

This show could have been handled a lot worse. I'm looking forward to future episodes and finding out some finer plot points. Especially a few 'why?' questions I already have.

yeah i can see Kurenai going loli, or more aishiteruze baby... especially with the whole potential 'romance' at school thing...it feels like kurenai wants to be more slice-of-life, but is unsure whether to go that direction or not. I liked aishiteruze baby, and happier animes, but im hoping they keep kurenai much darker, as this series seems really good atm. It seems to be one of the deeper animes currently airing...i want more blood and action :)
