Ghost Hound

Sep 28, 2021

It's not often I get to sit down and write a review shortly after watching an anime; if I was able to do so every time, I'd have pages and pages of reviews.  Plenty to get around to, but here I am writing a review of Ghost Hound which I just finished watching. The anime is, well...out of this world in many senses of the meaning.  Frankly, it's out of this world just how long it took them to answer the questions brought up in the first couple episodes...or not answer them depending on what question is being asked. Let me be honest:  What's going to get you to watch, and keep watching it, is... See full review

Great Pretender

Feb 21, 2021

I was a little annoyed at how difficult it was to watch this anime (darn those Netflix-exclusives), but it was worth the re-sub.  Let's just dive straight in, shall we? -- Story A Robin Hood-like group, only they con the rich and give to themselves.  Makoto Edamura prides himself as being the greatest con-man in Japan, but when a mysterious stranger pulls one over on him, he finds himself forced to flee to L.A where he gets mixed up with the same man who conned him in the first place as he is dragged into an even bigger world of the art of conning involving the mafia and drugs. The poor... See full review

Great Teacher Onizuka

Feb 9, 2020

This is the story of a perverted, delinquent teacher as he is forced to deal with a couple of 14-year-old psychopaths. No, seriously; that's basically what it boils down to.  The series was really good to start with, but then it felt like it jumped between "psycho girl of the week" and "really weird final arc with a dozen or so plotholes in it", plus filler episodes in the middle of some of the bigger arcs and one teacher whose brief "arc" was never even completed. Not that it isn't a good series, but it really goes off the rails (that, and the show always seems to need... See full review

Ghost Hunt

Jan 5, 2020

This is certainly a good series, but it leaves much to be desired.  I had to supplement it with reading the Wiki because sadly, the characters remain underdeveloped and little to nothing is explained about any of them (such as their pasts).  This holds especially true for one of the protagonists. The more I looked back on the anime to write this review, the more I realized just how "incomplete" this anime feels. Story The anime is a case-by-case sort of storytelling with no overarching plot.  It follows first year high school student Mai Taniyama as she winds up working for... See full review

GATE (2016)

Oct 13, 2018

Season two, let's go!  I'm actually not too sure where to start on this, because as a whole it wasn't nearly as good as the first season (and even the first season had its downsides).  For those less interested in the political side and who wanted more action/adventure, this season does deliver that.  I was a lot more interested in this season due to politics taking the back seat (except in the otherworld, of course), but with the exception of a couple "boss" fights, it didn't follow up well or even match the first season. Story Same as the first season, though this time the... See full review

GATE

Oct 12, 2018

Not the sort of thing I typically watch, but it's actually a very good isekai (another world) anime.  There is a hefty amount of political intrigue, but even if that's not your cup of tea you should be alright (from someone who also dislikes political intrigue). Story/Plot One day, an odd structure appeared in Ginza, Tokyo (Japan) which acted as a gate to another world.  From it came a literal army of humans, orcs, goblins, and even dragon riders who attacked people indiscriminately until the Japanese police and military were able to subdue them. After investigation into the portal, Japan... See full review

Gangsta.

Oct 23, 2017

I stumbled upon this due to a GIF of two people fighting with swords, found the character's name, looked it up, and then found this anime. I have a LOT of complaints for this anime, though up until around episode 8, it's pretty good.  Then, it crashed and burned in a rocky pit of "WTF is even going on?". Story What story?  The majority of this seemed to be the story of a third character (a prostitute from the first episode) rather than anything else. There are people with what we would call "super powers" called "Twilights" or "Dogtags" who apparently... See full review

Grimgar of Fantasy and Ash

Jun 6, 2017

A friend suggested this anime to me when I told them that I didn't really enjoy Log Horizon, and that I wasn't really thrilled with how SAO wound up.  They said it was more "realistic", but told me nothing else. When I read the summary for it, nothing was given away...though I had my misgivings when I saw that it was only 12 episodes long.  However, I found that I enjoyed it, and am hoping for a second season...and going as far as to look into the light novels the anime was based off of. Plot A group of young adults to adults find themselves in a fantasy world (Grimgar) with no... See full review

Ginga e Kickoff!!

Feb 26, 2013

Unique for a soccer anime.  Admittingly, the only other soccer anime I ever liked was "Whistle!".  I didn't find Captain Tsubasa exciting, Area no Kishi was so-so for me (it eventually got to the point where there were too many characters to keep track of, like most sports anime tend to get). Ginga, though, is different.  It does have its down sides, and isn't as good as "Whistle!", but each and every chararacter on the team has personality. I did give the animation a low score because of repeated footage; not just in different episodes, but the same episodes that it was... See full review
