Sword of the Stranger

Nov 5, 2022

I sat throughout the movie thinking:  "If they kill the dog, I'mma be PISSED." That aside, I don't understand the hype surrounding this movie.  It's an older movie, but with the ratings it had I expected an instant classic.  Not at all the case. -- Story A young boy named Kotaro has to flee from his home, with his dog Tobimaru, when it is attacked.  He is told by a man to take some sort of item to barter with and go to the Mangaku Temple to fully escape because the people who attacked were after Kotaro, and on the way, he meets the wandering samurai Kensh--I mean... Summer Time Rendering

Oct 15, 2022

I wouldn't put this on a level of Steins Gate, but it was still very well done.  That said, I wish there had been some sort of warning that, shortly after the anime starts, the pixelation on the screen is deliberate.  I actually stopped watching and went to find a different version because I thought the file was corrupted. -- Story On Hitogashima island in Wakayama, there is an old legend about the Shadow Sickness:  Any person who sees their doppleganger (shadow) will die. Shinpei is a student who returns to the island from his studies in Tokyo in order to attend the funeral of his... See full review

Saiyuki Reload: Zeroin

Oct 6, 2022

They finally went and did it; they finally animated the Just a Worm arc.  Yet...somehow, the manga had way more impact. -- Story As the group continues to head West to stop the Minus Wave and Gyumaou, they encounter a strange priest named Hazel who has a frightening power:  He can bring the dead back to live with the souls of demons. In addition to him, there seems to be a familiar crow of darkness behind everything; watching and sometimes interferring with the events as a struggle occurs for the meaning of life, death, and nothingness. "Even a worm will turn." Honestly, it... See full review

Seven Days War

Oct 6, 2022

Not gonna lie, I was expecting a little more tactics even if it was in the form of Home Alone meets Japanese high school students.  That said, it was still a rather good movie with some twists and turns in regards to the characters which even I didn't see coming. -- Story When finding out that his childhood friend (and crush) is going to be moving to Tokyo shortly after her birthday in a week, high school student (and history enthisiast) Mamoru gathers his courage not to ask her out but to suggest that they run away together.  Aya, the girl, takes it as a group suggest and invites some... SK8 the Infinity

Apr 8, 2021

Skateboarding is cool and exciting enough...so how does one make it even more exciting? They add laser pointers, firecrackers, brawling, and physics-defying moves of course!  Actually, let's just make it Mario Kart on skateboards! Someone finally made an anime about skateboarding, but don't expect it to be sports-oriented like all those other sports anime out there.  This is a shounen anime with skateboarding, not a sports anime. Story Langa, a snowboarder who had been living in Canada, moves (back) to Japan with his mother after the passing of his father.  He soon meets Reki, a... See full review

Seraph of the End

Nov 26, 2019

I don't know why this anime has a 4.1 star rating.  PLEASE, before you watch, look at the overall review rating from the people who took the time to watch and review the anime and go by that.  If you're still interested, then by all means go ahead and watch it...but take the star rating from the site with a grain of salt. Plot I'm honestly not sure what to put here, as the plot is something the writers continue to keep hidden from the viewers.  After all 12 episodes, you still will most likely not know much of anything about...well, ANYTHING. There's no world building; nothing is... See full review

School Babysitters

Apr 8, 2018

Funny, adorable, and light-hearted?  Yep. Does it live up to the manga?  Not so much. Is it still worth your time if you're looking for something cute?  Definitely. Story Ryuichi Kashima and his toddler brother, Kotaro, suddenly find themselves in the care of an elderly woman who is the chairman of a school (middle school and high school) when their parents are killed in a plane crash.  The strict old woman also lost family in the plane crash, and takes in the brothers on the condition that Ryuichi has to work at the school's daycare facility for the kids of the teachers (who are... Steins;Gate

Mar 19, 2018

I'm going to preface by saying that this anime is not for everyone.  Those not too interested in time travel or quantum theory (things such as parallel worlds, divergence lines, chaos theory, ect) might have a hard time following it even though it does a fairly good job at going over the basics of what people need to know. However, for those interested in those things (or are interested in general), I'd highly recommend this.  It's not a "mindless" anime, but rather a thought-provoking one. Story In the year 2010, self-proclaimed "mad scientist" Okabe is attending a lecture... See full review

Saiyuki Reload Blast

Sep 21, 2017

The Sanzo party is back, and the anime is actually following the manga from what I recall. Now, it has been quite a while since I read the manga past Reload volume 9 (where it stopped being printed in the US due to Tokyopop going out of business), but I do remember some of the things in it. Story Genjo Sanzo, Hakkai, Goku, and Gojyo have finally arrived in India in their journey west.  They're surprised to find out that many shops don't accept their Golden Credit card, and get a bit of culture shock on top of a few minor incidents... ...at least, until a familiar yet unfamiliar face shows up as... Sweetness & Lightning

Jan 13, 2017

I read the beginning of some reviews before I watched this, but even so, I was surprised at how little character development there was.  Slice-of-life anime doesn't necessarily have to have a "plot", per say...most of that "plot" is in day to day antics that the characters get up to. However,  I was quite surprised that not only was there no plot, but there was little to no character development.  The characters were fairly flat and remained the same throughout the series. That said, it was cute and charming. Plot There really is no plot.  The story revolves... See full review

Slayers

Jan 9, 2015

The Slayers is one of the few anime I'll ever give a 10 out of 10 rating to, and there's a reason it's my number one all-time favorite anime.  Though a lot of it is generic fantasy and spellcasting, the characters bring the story to life. The anime itself was adapted from a light novel, and though it doesn't follow it to the letter, it's still interesting and entertaining. I will also say that this is one of the few anime where the English dub is just as good as the original Japanese cast.  I have seen both versions, and the voice actors really bring the characters to life. Story There are... See full review

Sword Art Online II

Jan 5, 2015

I must say, I was hesitant to watch the second season after seeing the first.  The first season was a great idea, but the execution of it (the flow) was terrible.  However, I decided that I wanted to know what happened, and if some plot holes were filled, so I watched. I wasn't disappointed. In fact, it's going to be hard to be objective in my review for two reasons.  The first is that I have personal experience with dealing with a trauma (an issue brought up in the first arc), and that...well, to try and keep spoilers out as well, let's just say that I had a friend in a similar position... Sword Art Online

Jan 4, 2015

I meant to check this anime out when it first was released, but up until now, was unable to.  Now that I have seen it...well, I've certainly seen better.  This is an anime which truly doesn't live up to nor deserve all the hype it got. Now, before everyone starts shouting "how dare you insult this anime!" at me, I will admit that it certainly had potential.  The idea and main protagonists certainly had potential, but never lived up to any of it.  In fact, the second arc goes so far as to completely ruin the series by being completely unnecessary. Story A gaming unit... See full review

Saiyuki Gaiden

Jun 9, 2014

I read the chapters in the manga a long time ago, and I finally was able to see the animated version. I did have to dock a point or two here and there; mostly because there wasn't any explanation leading into the entire story.  Anyone who has read the manga knows why Nataku was ordered to kill Goku in the beginning, but that was never explained in the Gaiden animation. Otherwise, it was excellent. Story I did dock points off the story, only because the first episode wasn't told in a very coherent way.  There was little to nothing which led up to the major "crisis", or explanation... Saiyuki Reload

Jun 3, 2014

If this season wasn't filled with pointless (and often boring) filler episodes, it would overshadow the first season completely.  12 out of the 25 episodes in this season are fillers, and most of them are ones I'll never watch again.  However, on the positive side, the animators finally fixed that nasty "still frame" habit with the fight scenes. The animation isn't perfect, and there are still some "no contact" scenes which plagued the first 50 episodes, but the fights are much more immersive.  Unfortunately, it dropped in the "sound" rating, because not only do... Saiyuki Interactive

Jun 2, 2014

I didn't think it was possible to do worse than Saiyuki Reload:Gunlock, which I rate even lower than the Saiyuki movie, and then I saw this.  As much as I love Saiyuki, I got bored within the first minute of watching it. This OVA was originally a Saiyuki interactive video game, Kibou no Zaika, created as a sequel to the Requiem movie (something which I didn't enjoy, either; I watched it once and shelved it).  I have only seen this sort of thing work once, and it was in an anime short. I'm not even going to bother breaking this down in one of my typical long review styles, because it's just not... See full review

Saiyuki

Jun 2, 2014

I'll start off by saying that if you don't like slow paced anime, you won't like Saiyuki.  That said, it's one of the most brilliantly written pieces of work.  Even the filler episodes are interesting and worth watching at least once. Though, I did have to dock points off of the Story for not including the Kami-sama arc (even though they did instead use a rather interesting anime exclusive arc, so I didn't dock too many points due to that). The soundtrack for this series is one of the best soundtracks for an anime.  Usually, when I watch a series, there will be at least one opening or... See full review

Saiyuki Reload Gunlock

Jun 2, 2014

Warning:  This review is written from the point of view of someone who has read the manga version first.  If I had to sum up this series in two words, it would be "filler episodes".  Boasting all of 6 out of 26 episodes actually based off of the manga counterpart, this season is practically nothing but filler episodes. The characters are the same as always, so we're not going to touch on that; yes, two new characters were introduced as antagonists, which was actually why I docked points.  I didn't find Hazel interesting in the manga, and I found him even worse in the anime...
