Action is about conflict. Whether with guns, blades, fists, or mysterious powers, these anime feature characters in combat - either to protect themselves or the things or people they value, or simply as a way of life.

In these anime, characters embark on a journey to explore the world or to search for something. These wanderers travel to many places and meet new people, often encountering hardships along the way, or discovering strengths and weaknesses about themselves that are revealed throughout the adventure.

These anime are heavily or loosely influenced by Lewis Carroll's 1865 publication Alice's Adventures in Wonderland, or its sequel Through the Looking-Glass. They range between true adaptations, alternate versions, parodies, or stories that take place in a new setting that heavily mimics or alludes to Alice's journey.

The Anime Tamago project, formerly known as the Young Animator Training Project and Anime Mirai, was created in 2010 by the Japanese government's Agency of Cultural Affairs to help support and train young animators on the job. Each year, four different studios are chosen, and each studio creates and releases an original short film.

Assassins specialize in killing targeted individuals. These anime showcase assassins in training or on the job, whether they're a part of an organized group or work as freelancers.

Blackmail is forcible coercion, convincing someone to do something they'd rather not by threatening to reveal something privileged or secret, or some other form of harm. These anime typically focus on a single instance of blackmail that is central to a story, delving into how and why the situation comes about or its eventual effects on both the blackmailer and the victim.

These anime aim to make you laugh through satire, parody, humorous observations, slapstick scenarios, or absurd antics. Bonus points for spitting your drink all over your screen!

A delinquent is a young person, generally of school age, who has a problem with following social rules or the word of authority figures. These anime typically focus on the group dynamics of a delinquent's gang of friends, or the misadventures they get into thanks to their attitudes and actions.

Demons are non-human entities generally believed to be dark or evil in nature. If demons are a core aspect of the work, their actions - often harmful to humans - will generally be the focus. Characters may engage in fighting demons physically; may attempt exorcisms or other rituals or spells to deal with them; or may be the demons or their servants or allies, carrying out their own agendas.

Detectives are people who investigate crimes. These anime feature characters who work the streets, analyze evidence from crime scenes, or research past records, using logic and reasoning to discover who did what, and how. Detectives may be members of a police force, employed by some other organization, or private citizens with a desire to learn the truth.

Drama anime heavily emphasize their characters' emotional development. Whether by experiencing the protagonist’s emotional turmoil, viewing heated character interactions, or exploring a passionate romance, any anime that humanizes its characters through emphasizing their flaws qualifies as a Drama.

Constant panty shots, bouncing breasts and dubious camera angles are hallmarks of an Ecchi title. These titles are usually sexualized and designed to titillate, depicting perverted themes and focusing heavily on the female body. Nosebleeds, suspicious hand positions, faceplanting into bosoms, expressive and exaggerated body parts and other tropes characterize this genre. Ecchi is all about fanservice, while Borderline H and Smut titles focus more on sexual content.

These anime contain graphic acts of physical conflict, such as weapon fights that result in visible mutilation or realistically-depicted dismemberment, gruesome deaths, or people exploding into viscera.

Fantasy anime take place in a broad range of settings influenced by mythologies, legends, or popular and defining works of the genre such as The Lord of the Rings. They are generally characterized by a low level of technological development, though fantasy stories can just as easily take place in our modern world, or in a Post-apocalyptic society where technology was buried alongside the old world. These anime also tend to feature magic or other extraordinary abilities, strange or mysterious creatures, or humanoid races which coexist with humanity or inhabit their own lands removed from ours.

These anime take place in Japan between the Heian and Meiji eras. Common themes are typically influenced by Samurai, shinsengumi, or the shogunate, and frequently focus on warfare, travel, or rural life.

The protagonists of these anime are hot on the trail of ghosts, goblins and other things that go bump in the night. Whether they're running a paranormal school club or ghost hunting in a haunted mansion, the characters of these anime are always on the lookout for the supernatural.

These anime showcase close-quarters combat, from Martial Arts, to Boxing, to flat out street brawling and beyond. Hand-to-hand combat includes all forms of kicks, punches, grabs, or throws, or even stranger close quarters maneuvers.

Characters in these stories play a 'game' with serious consequences. Fame, fortune, power, life: any or all of these may be won or lost according to the rules of competition. The stakes and the rules may be agreed upon by parties involved, or imposed on them by an external force; either way, not following them will usually have severe consequences for the transgressor. Those who take part in the game will generally be forced to play until they win... or lose.

Horror anime create an atmosphere of unease. Like Mystery anime, they encourage viewers to learn more about their world... but there may be secrets that are better left unexplored. Through eerie music and sounds, visceral or disturbing imagery, or startling moments, works of Horror make you worry about what gruesome thing is coming next.

Magic is the use of gestures, incantations, or rituals to harness some kind of supernatural power. Characters in Magic anime tend to go by titles such as witch, wizard, mage, or sorcerer, and may be occupied with learning to harness these abilities or with finding magical relics or battling against strange entities... or other magic users.

These anime feature young, generally school-aged girls as defenders of love, life, and justice. They typically stumble upon the source of a magical power, or are granted one by allies that are aware of evil forces on the rise. Often by using a special item or with the help of a magical familiar, these characters are able to transform into an alter-ego ready to cause mischief or fight their foes. Magical Girl is a sub-genre of Henshin Heroes.

Characters in these anime attend a Magic School where they learn about the magical arts.

Martial arts are techniques that heavily involve training and are steeped in tradition. These techniques can have varied applications such as self-defense, psychological health or advanced use of weaponry, amongst others. Characters in these anime often spend much of their time training to defend themselves or others, participate in competitions of skill, honor their culture, or develop their health and spirituality.

These anime include mature or controversial topics that are not suitable for children, such as teen pregnancy, Sexual Abuse, prostitution, Drug Use, or others.

Mercenaries are people who take on dangerous jobs for their own personal gain and generally don't have any loyalty to their employer. In these anime, characters undertake a variety of jobs such armed combat, retrieving an item or person, or straightforward assassination.
