Yeah it is definitely a departure from the norm to say the least. I wouldn't personally call it the best thing ever, bit I don't think there is anything else quite like it. Not many anime have that degree of social commentary, being simultaneously anti-war yet also glorifying conquest and military service at the same time. I have to get into a second rewatch sometime (saw it last year) but those endless subtitles can be a hurdle.
