The Seven Deadly Sins

Jan 3, 2019

So I never planed to actually watch this anime.  It just always seemed like your generic shonen anime that are a dime a dozen and in a lot of ways it is but The Seven Deadly Sins takes a very refreshing take on the Shonen genre.  It has a way of getting you completely invested in the characters and their struggles.  Honestly its the kind of Shonen anime that believe can respark the genre that’s become so over saturated and bogged down with tropes.

Story: 5/10

The Story is very straight forward and easy to follow.  Its your very typical shonen adventure and discover the hero’s dark past stories.  It stays very linear and very seldom diverges from the main plots only for those tiny misadventures to eventually lead right back into the main plot.  This is a shonen so you can expect plenty of plot armor and unexplained miracles right in the nick of time.  This can be frustrating however not unexpected or in bad taste as most of the genres recent top earners are guilty of.

Animation:  9/10

recently there has been this struggle with animation studios to use the right amount of CGI and it instantly throws me out of any connection i have with the show.  But this anime’s Animation is almost beautiful to watch.  All the motions are fluid and flow.  There is no over reliance of CGI.  Even the fight scenes flow keep the viewer engaged even in the fast pace “after image” type fights that occur while the stronger characters fight are interesting and very well done.

Sound:  8/10

Music has a way to teleport the listener to diffent place and time and can be a useful tool but is way to often used a way to make something seem more “bad ass” or over hype in the case of most opening theme songs.  However The Seven Deadly Sins soundtrack was beautifully put together and really put you in the era and even situation of the setting.  Nothing was ever over the top and most of the music in the show really sounded like you would have heard it there.  And even the sound effects where on point.  With all the knights in armor and sword fighting it was surprising the amount of detail used to flesh out these characters using sound.

Characters 9/10

I immediately fell in love with all the characters in the show.  To include the antagonists.  All the characters where written very carefully made very loveable to the point I was invested in most everyone on screen.  The writing was done in a way that you understood the characters motives and made some the fights hard to watch because how invested you are in both characters.  Iv always hated the whole “he’s the good guy and he’s the bad guy” way of telling a story.  Real life is never like that so it makes stories like that hard to believe for me.  But the character development here show that the enemy isn’t always a “bad guy” and sometimes peoples interest and investments clash with another’s.

5/10 story
9/10 animation
8/10 sound
9/10 characters
7.8/10 overall
