Definitely get involved in the forums if you feel comfortable doing so. Feel free to join some clubs or play some forum games as well - fastest way to meet people and make new friends here. You'll definitely get to recognize and "know" other members and make new friends on the site.
The forums are the real heart of communication on the site (you can send private messages to other members and can get involved with clubs and group activities). It's lively and fun here - lots of interaction with other members.
But note that you'll need to create a separate forum registration ID - most folks use the same as their site ID so it is easy to find them - as the two areas are not yet merged (that is coming sometime in the very near future as part of the site redesign).
