Aggretsuko 4

Apr 18, 2022

It took me four seasons, but I finally discovered the crux of my problem with the show. If you got this far in the Aggretsuko series, you probably already have reasons for why you like it. Not really sure who this review is for honestly, because when season 5 comes out you can be sure I'll watch it with you.  At the end of seasons 1 of Aggretsuko, things essentially return to the status quo. This worked great for the show, since season 1 centers mostly around accepting where you're at in life, despite your glamorous and unrealistic fantasies for yourself. But then season 2 ends in a... Amagi Brilliant Park

Jan 15, 2022

Amagi Brilliant Park, one of KyoAni’s shows that has not stood the test of time, is a scattered mess of untapped potential. On one hand, the show has KyoAni’s signature character designs that are both adorable and beautiful, as well as thrilling and creative animation. On the other, we have a story that fails to leave an impact and characters that never grow out of their gimmicks. On the surface, the problem of “how to keep this fantasy amusement park open” seems intriguing and potentially unique. However, the show focuses much less on the “amusement” and... See full review

Backflip!!

Jan 14, 2022

If sports anime were ice cream flavors, Bakuten!! would be cookies and cream. Not something to push someone out of their comfort zone, but solid and enjoyable nonetheless. The story begins with a newbie gymnast and follows the Ao High team into competition. As the show goes on, we meet rivals, get some training camp action, and learn character backstories. Again, a fairly standard sports show, but it has enough of its own flair that made it really dope. A vibrant and fun cast, colorful visuals, and compelling drama. The visuals need to be judged in two sections: the CGI performances and everything else. By... See full review

The Idaten Deities Know Only Peace

Jan 14, 2022

The Idaten Deities Know Only Confusion It’s difficult to sum up this anime because I really don’t understand the point. Not that it needs a point, but it leads me on to expect a point. In general, the show feels like a regular action-shounen with more mature elements that don’t seem to serve much purpose other than to be edgy. The show focuses largely on battles and training, but attempts to make commentary on morality that turns out either confused or childish. At the start of the show, the idaten live among humans yet refrain from involvement due to peacetime. When encountered with... See full review

Fairy Tail x Rave

Aug 3, 2021

This entire OVA is essentially a joke about how Hiro Mashima has no originality in his characters. Basically the main casts of Fairy Tail and Rave meet up and have moments like this: And everyone fights an enemy together, becomes friends, is on their merry way. Not a bad story, but not especially interesting either. In general, I found the OVA extremely childish, with its gratuitous fanservice and potty humor. When a character outright says "Sexual harassment is bad" (no joke, this is a real... See full review

Those Snow White Notes

Jun 18, 2021

Those Snow White Notes delivered on the notes, but not much else. Wild Ride Gone Wrong  Though it started and ended on a wild ride, Those Snow White Notes has a whole lotta nothing in between. The story with our protagonist Setsu, who moves to Tokyo to get a fresh start after his grandfather dies. The first episode spins a whirlwind of drama, with each scene progressing quickly to a ridiculous and unpredictable conclusion. However, the show continues on a completely disconnected thread and morphs into a sleep inducing school life anime. Toward the end, the drama picks up with more... See full review

A Journey Through Fairyland

May 16, 2021

Is this movie following in the footsteps of Disney’s Fantasia or merely a cheap Sanrio knockoff?  Fantasia and Disney’s Vision Like A Journey Through Fairyland, Fantasia uses long fantastical sequences to visually “narrate” classical music pieces. In the production of Fantasia, Walt Disney had a specific vision of bringing larger audiences to the classical music sphere. The freedom of animation to produce fantastical sequences helps with accessibility. Unfortunately, this style... See full review

Ne Zha

Apr 11, 2021

If you like dope CGI action sequences, then this movie could be for you. But if you hate crude jokes - particularly ones about bodily fluids - well… just prepare yourself.  The story centers around two young boys fighting against their fates. The antagonist Ao Bing possesses the good spirit pearl but is raised by an “evil” father and our protagonist Ne Zha has the demon spirit pearl but raised by “good” parents. So the story isn’t anything groundbreaking.  The strength of this anime is in the visuals. The fantastical magical... See full review

Attack on Titan The Final Season

Mar 31, 2021

N.B. I’m gonna assume you watched seasons 1-3 so please do that if you don’t want to be spoiled. Onto the review! Have you ever been perplexed about a question as a kid and then when you asked an adult never got a straight answer? That’s how I feel about AoT S4. The first arc establishes a new setting, new characters, even arguably a new protagonist in Reiner… And then re-introduces our protagonist whose personality has completely changed with no explanation. Am I... See full review

Kaze no Matasaburou (2016)

Feb 7, 2021

If you suffer with insomnia, this may be the short for you! It was effective for eatmerindou.

Animations of everyday actions are appealing when they're put into a new perspective because of the attention to detail. Miyazaki, for example, has been praised for this sort of style. On the other hand, minor actions slowed down to glacial speed are somehow both sleep-inducing and frustration-igniting. And that's this anime.

When I say "nothing happens" in this anime, I am not merely complaining about a lack of plot in a... See full review

Aki no Kanade

Jan 31, 2021

Usually when an anime is about a specific hobby/passion of a character like music or sports, its portrayal makes you more passionate about that topic regardless of your initial interest. Aki no Kanade, on the other hand, did not make me more intrigued by taiko drumming in the slightest. Excusing this anime for its short runtime seems unfair to the Anime Tamago that actually make good use of your 22 minutes. So let's talk about the pacing. We start from the perspective of jaded... Music Girls (2015)

Jan 31, 2021

I hated the music and I hated the girls. Some spoilers but trust me I'm doing u a favor. Scattered thoughts of varying importance - both girls kinda being assholes for no reason. pigtail-bow-hair girl forcing her dreams on brooding ponytail girl. both girls creepin on each other's private shit. (pigtail looking at ponytail's computer and ponytail reading pigtail's mail) Am i supposed to feel anything for either of them at any point? - the long drawn out bath scene. it's fine for pigtail to violate ponytail because they're girls and girls are close... Sound! Euphonium Movie 3: Our Promise - A Brand New Day

Dec 27, 2020

Instead of a music anime, Sound Euphonium Movie 3: Our Promise is a school drama with music as a backdrop. What makes a good music anime? I believe it is 1) a well-executed combination of music and animation 2) to develop characters or plot. For instance, musical struggles might probe the characters - “why music?” - on an individual (Your lie in April) or a societal (Carole and Tuesday) level. These moments allow the audience to see personal motivations... See full review

Puka Puka Juju

Nov 15, 2020

Watching Puka Puka Juju started as a meme to see an anime about my screen name. It turned into discovering my favorite anime short film. Puka Puka Juju is an Anime Tamago short directed by Hiroshi Kawamata about the development of a father-daughter relationship through a young girl’s wild imagination and a father’s compassionate heart. The strength of this film is that it takes advantage of the format; in other words, it uses its short amount of time to deliver... See full review

Haibane Renmei

Sep 27, 2020

Angels. The afterlife. Sin, guilt, redemption. These concepts explored in Haibane Renmei evoke Christianity, but as the story unfolds, there is little connection to Christianity in substance. Clear Christian references are made like the creation myth and “clergy,” but the messages, particularly about sin and redemption, are non-Christian. Overall, the anime seems to align more with eastern spirituality, such as the haibane’s past lives, names, and dreams (even the fact that they celebrate New Year but... See full review
