Oh yeah, I definitely prefer characters be interesting rather than likeable necessarily. I mean, it's better if I can like someone in it, but I don't require it.
I just appreciated the fact that you pointed out that there is a lot to dislike in the characters and events, but that didn't mean the anime was bad for it. Considering how awash the world is with anime that is all so very similar (not necessarily always meaning bad) it's refreshing to find an anime that is this dark, but purposefully so. I just liked that it was balanced. I'm a fan of that.

The Old Crocodile: probably one of the most unnerving things I've watched. It appears such a simple fable that could even be told to children, especially with the deceptively mild-mannered narration. But it gets under your skin in ways that other shows didn't. Especially with the crocodile's internal conflict about whether to eat the object of his love. Anyway, regarding your review, which I can now appreciate with new eyes:
"One of the design choices, however, could be seen as insensitive and though I don't believe it is intended as such that is rather unfortunate."
You are talking about the Africans, right? The moment that came up, I just thought 'Jesus fucking Christ. 1) Egyptians don't look like that. 2) Way to pound home the stereotype!'
One of the worst moments of the entire show, actually, was the way the girl ENJOYED being eaten. On some level I was starting to think about objectification of women with the line ‘His love for the Octopus was two-fold. On the one hand, was the love for her kindness, her modesty, and her knowledge; on the other, was the love for her juicy legs.’ If that's not talking about men's approach to women on some fundamental level, I don't know what is. Haha! But anyway, then the tribal lady's ecstasy at being devoured just made my stomach churn.
This movie is so deplorable in such a laudable way. It's haunting me still.
