While it is a beautifully animated movie I really don't understand what stands out about it that it ended up being ranked first among the scores of anime out there. For me it was a romance story that dabbled a little bit with science fiction but did not touch me emotionally like Wolf Children or  Spirited Away kind of storylines managed to do. Its a a slightly above average anime movie which has been beautifully animated but isnt really 'fresh' in terms of the plot.

The Irregular at Magic High School

Dec 7, 2016

The series is split into 3 arcs Episodes 1 to 7 - Enrollment (7 episodes) Episodes 8 to 18 - Nine Schools Competition (11 episodes) Episodes 19 to 26 - Yokohama Disturbance (8 episodes) It plays out in a future where due to Global wars identities and territories of Nations have been redefined (but with Japan remaining as such) and "Magic" is a technological advancement that the future society heavily depends upon. The people who do no  not have the ability to wield magic efficiently or at all are considered inferior and this mindset reflects in the policies & attitudes of fellow... See full review

The Wallflower

Sep 17, 2016

The Wallflower is no doubt a different anime. There are many elements in it that can keep one from continuing the series. Nevertheless when I finally finished watching the 25th episode I was left with a happy feeling.  Note : The Tag is wrong. I would not call this a reverse harem. This anime doesn't even fall in the romance category. "Uncoventional Light Hearted comedy" would probably be a more apt genre I would put this anime in. The Bad - Terrible animation. Irony is that Sunako (the heroine) is supposed to be ugly and scary looking yet it is the supposedly "handsome"... See full review

Nisekoi OVA

Jul 31, 2016

This review is based only on OVA1 Each OVA consists of 2 short stories of about 10 minutes each. To be viewed only after the completion of the 20 episodes of the main series if you haven't read the Manga. The story titled "Loss" is about Onodera's best friend Ruri losing her spectacles. It is taken from Chapter 58 of the Manga. Its an ok episode, not too many gags.  The Story called "Shrine Maiden" is hilarious. I haven't laughed this hard since the penultimate episode of Nisekoi that involved the Romeo Juliet Play. It is adapted from Chapter 64 of the Manga. Characters: Remain... See full review

Amnesia OVA

Jul 6, 2016

The episode was quite funny - plenty of gags. This was in sharp contrast with the TV series that instead focussed on Mystery/Harem theme. The OVA plays out more like a slice of life at the Cafe where all the characters work and had very little if any romance elements. In fact, the focus wasn't on the Heroine at all but rather on the interactions and quirks of all the Male leads including Ukio who is a "regular customer" at the Cafe in this "Alternate world". The OVA can be enjoyed without having gone through the original TV series. Animation - Same as the series. The problem is that... See full review

Tales from Earthsea

Jul 6, 2016

A deeply philosophical movie that unfortunately takes too long to develop its plot. While the start is abrupt leaving many questions hanging, most of them are eventually answered if the viewer is patient enough to see the Movie through. For more than half the movie I wasn't sure where the story was even headed or if it even had a plot at all. Had the movie been shorter with the emphasis on the second half, I would have rated this movie higher.
Characters : No one particulary stood out for me except SparrowHoawk who to me seemed like the Gandalf equivalent of Earthsea. I am also still uncertain... See full review

The Pet Girl of Sakurasou

May 27, 2016

I can only say how disappointed I was with this anime. So much potential squandered in the pursuit of fanservice. The highlight of the anime for me are the two episodes towards the fag end where the Main Character Sorata & his romantic interest Nanami deal with the harsh realities of failure. They are the only normal and relatable characters in the show for me. It is so unfortunate that I had to put up with a pointlessly meandering story abound with annoying characters in order to reach those 2 good episodes.  Later it fell flat again with a "school speech" by Misaki, an... Rainbow Days

May 18, 2016

This is the first time I am coming across a Shoujo series that revolves around a group of boys & with a male lead. The episodes are short but sweet with a gentle sprinkle of comedy. All the guys have their respective love interests develop over the series. I am not happy with the Opening theme song though, its quite bland. Overall I would call it a time-pass anime. Some trivia: A lot of people find the guys bearing a resembelance with those in "Free!". Aso, apparently the maroon haired character "Tomoya" has been voiced by the same person who played the role of "Hachiman... See full review

Recorder and Randsell Re

May 16, 2016

Finally the parents have been introduced! It still annoys me how largely absent they are in the lives of Atsushi & Atsumi but this is a problem in most Anime I have come across. It makes no sense to me how the parents did not bother clearing up things with the police and the localites so that Atsushi would not have to be harrassed so much. Nevertheless, its still a fun anime to watch that you can finish in just half an hour. I can definetly afford to spend that much time to watch an anime such as this despite its flaws.

Recorder and Randsell Mi

May 16, 2016

With a slight improvement in animation and addressing some major issues of the previous series this third installment builds on the characters and their interactions with each other. New characters are introduced which was a welcome move and created opportnities for fresher puns. Three police women that had been introduced in season 2 are now recurring characters who know Atsushi (Thanks to the clear up in the previous series) and therefore he is no longer being hauled to the police station as a "molester". Overall a decent watch and considering how you can finish the series within half an hour... See full review

Recorder and Randsell Mi Special

May 16, 2016

This is a 2 minute take on the circumstances that change and those that remain the same in a gender swapped scenario (Genders of the siblings is retained but all side characters are of the opposite sex). In this episode, Atsushi is the elder albeit stunted brother of Atsumi. One striking element to this whole premise that this episode intentionally brought out was how the police did not consider Atsumi to be a child molester because of her gender. I personally found it hard to accept the gender changes but appreciate how the above hypocricy(?!) in our society was addressed.

No Game No Life

Feb 24, 2016

I was frankly disappointed by how the plot attempted to be sophesticated yet lacked character development and how the protagonist duo were so "perfect" and never capable of failing. It made me despise the main characters rather than contributing to any feeling of awe or admiration. It made no sense to me how a person who is supposedly ill adjusted in the real world and confines himself to a virtual world which is where he excels is suddenly able to make tough choices with confidence and swagger because he is in a "game" even though technically it is as good as another "real"... Monthly Girls' Nozaki-kun Specials

Feb 9, 2016

The trick to enjoy the "Specials" is to watch them in one go because they are only three minutes long and each one a continuation of the same story ("Beach Episode"). The gags do not work well if the episodes are watched in isolation. I don't understand why they couldn't just combine the 6 segments and make one single "Special". Nevertheless, its an enjoyable 18 minutes spent.

Folktales from Japan

Jan 28, 2016

This is my first review. As an Asian and an outsider to Japanese culture I enjoyed the short stories which reflected the Shinto and Buddhist culture beautifully. Some stories have a moral, others are meant to explain the reasons for certain customs/rituals/ habits for Japanese children to follow. It is primarily aimed at a Japanese audience in my opinion but I enjoyed them just the same - I kept thinking about how similar Indian folk tales were and how some mythical creatures were similar in depiction in contrast to western folklore. The animation is simplistic but serves the purpose of conveying... See full review
