Anima Yell!

Dec 23, 2018

This show was the biggest surprise for me in the Fall 2018 season. I hadn't even noticed it until several weeks into the season and then it instantly grabbed my attention. Initially, I gave it a watch since it was produced by Doga Kobo, a studio that's been responsible for a lot of my favourite shows in the CGDCT (Cute Girls Doing Cute Things) genre. I will admit that some of their recent shows haven't impressed me, so I wasn't sure what to expect with Anima Yell! The fact that the story revolved around a group of cheerleaders gave me pause for thought, as well. I'll just say straight off that this show was... See full review

Plastic Memories

Jun 28, 2015

The theme of artifical life created by humans has been a staple in the world of scifi, particularly when the artificial life are androids that closely resembles its creator. It's these near-humans that provide an expansive world of possibilities in story telling that reflects back on what it means to be human. In Plastic Memories, this is the starting point for the story of the relationship between Tsukasa and Isla, a young man and an android, both of whom struggle to understand their feelings for each other while under the shadow the technical limitations of artificial humans in the story universe... Sound of the Sky

Jun 21, 2015

Sora no Wato is a series which attempts to merge two distinct story telling styles into one coherent story, but does it work? With the setting of a post-apocalyptic Earth that is still enduring a multitude of wars between the remaining nations, the focus is on a young teen girl, Sorami Kanata, who has enlisted in the army to pursue her goal of learning to play the bugle. It's through Kanata's eyes and her experiences as a new army recruit that we learn the stories of the women in the 1121st platoon and the greater story of a world that seems to be drawing to a close in its twilight.

It's when we meet... See full review

Welcome to the NHK!

Oct 24, 2014

It's easy to write off anime as a lightweight body of work that is commercially focused on appealing to a younger audience and heavily reliant on recycling well-worn tropes to pad out its content. To a certain extent, this criticism is warranted, but amongst all the fluff and cookie cutter productions, some shows rise above and prove that Japanese animation can make a real impact when it comes to telling stories that touch on our humanity. Welcome to the NHK is one such show that overcomes the rigid limitations of the animation industry and gives us a truly memorable story.

Released in 2006 and... See full review

Kill La Kill

Apr 1, 2014

With an impressive creative bloodline to draw from, Kill la Kill is visual feast for the senses. Were it a meal, it'd be shooter sandwich: a ridiculous amount of delicious ingredients crammed into a small space, squashed down to fit and then consumed with zero regrets. But is it a meal you'll want to go back and have again? Against the background of a dystopian world, Ryuuko Matoi arrives at Honnouji Academy, and her intent is made clear from the start: find and avenge her father's killer. The murder weapon is one half of a giant red scissor, and also happens to be Ryuuko's signature blade which she wields... See full review

HENNEKO - The Hentai Prince and the Stony Cat

Apr 1, 2014

I actually can't remember how I came upon this anime, or what motivated me to give it a try. The title of the show alone is enough to create a questionable first impression. However, I'm glad I ignored my unfounded initial misgivings, because, despite its flaws, this series delivers entertainment where it counts. The story centers on Youto, a second year high schooler who is introduced as a typical male teen driven by his insatiable hormones. In an effort to improve his abilities to win over girls, he visits a mysterious statue of a cat god that is purported to grant wishes. It also happens that Tsukiko, a... See full review
