Dukes of the North

All the stories I could find that feature the trope of a cold “Duke of the North.” Not all of the stories included are dukes, some are duchesses, some are counts, etc. but all of them are in some way a member of the nobility. The term “North” is subjective, but in general they have to be referred to as the noble “-of the North” or something to that effect, have a reputation for being cold, and/or have a power relating to snow or ice. While not necessarily required, it is almost guaranteed that they have white or black hair (usually white) and I couldn’t actually find any stories where this is not the case. UPDATE: 2024-02-03 this list has finally reached a total of 51 stories and 2 pages. In October of 2023, there were only 35. It’s just amazing. I’m in awe of the extent of this trope, especially given that most of these stories were created relatively recently, and I hope it never truly goes away because I think it’s super funny
1 Author of My Own Destiny

Author of My Own Destiny

Abel Heylon, the cold Duke of the North. Also known as the hottest hot dad to ever exist inside a web comic. He's not even the ML, but he is the ML of this story in my heart

2 Charming the Duke of the North

Charming the Duke of the North

The title is self explanatory. He has white hair. He nails the role of Duke of the North

3 How to Win My Husband Over

How to Win My Husband Over

Very loosely inspired by real people (specifically the Borgias). The FL is from fictional Rome and is shipped off to a Duke's son in fictional Britain, which is constantly referred to as 'the North.' While Britain may not fit the usual trope of 'the North' (does it even really snow much there??), it is very much North if you're from Italy. Plus, the ML and his sister have white hair and exquisitely fit the definition of 'cold nobles of the north,' so it counts.

4 The Age of Arrogance

The Age of Arrogance

A female noble of the North. Her position is kinda confusing, but it seems that she’s the ruler of a small self-governed rural territory that is part of an empire, but quasi-independent. Sometimes they’re calling her “marquis,” sometimes “count” or 'lord', but I suspect that “governor” or “queen/king” would technically be a more accurate description of her position and authority. Regardless, she is definitely the cold, brutal noble of the “North” and she hunts monsters. She fits the trope beautifully

5 Marriage of Convenience

Marriage of Convenience

I’m not technically sure if Arno is considered “the North,” but it seems cold a lot. The ML is the Count of Blood and Iron, his sigil is a wolf, he has white hair, and he's stoic, and everything else fits the trope so I’m counting it.

6 The Grand Duchess of the North Was Secretly a Villainess

The Grand Duchess of the North Was Secretly a Villainess

This time it's a *Duchess* of the North 🤌

7 A Villainess No More

A Villainess No More

He's the Archduke of *Winternight,* and the “monster of the North.'

8 Just Leave Me Be

Just Leave Me Be

This ML is *perfection* (at least in the novel, haven't started the manhwa). His Duke of the North vibes are so-so, but everything else is 👌

9 The Northern Duke Needs a Warm Hug

The Northern Duke Needs a Warm Hug

The title is self explanatory. Black-haired Northern Duke.

10 I Wasn't the Cinderella

I Wasn't the Cinderella

FL is the daughter of the Duke of the North, and he is definitely a cold Duke of the North. Her last name is even Winterglass.

11 Another Typical Fantasy Romance

Another Typical Fantasy Romance

Duke of the North, but this time he actually does look like a big burly man that would survive the winters in the North

12 The Duchess's Contract Marriage

The Duchess's Contract Marriage

It's a Cold *Duchess* of the North

13 Please Sponsor My Revenge

Please Sponsor My Revenge

Confirmed ep. 7: the Ferrado Duchy is located in the north, he is indeed a Duke of the North™

14 The Frost Flower Knight

The Frost Flower Knight

She's frosty, she has white hair, and she's a noble, so I think this counts, but idk. I don't think they ever explicitly state where she hails from and I *am* starting to see cold nobles of the North everywhere now, so it's possible this one is a real stretch

15 To Melt Your Frozen Heart

To Melt Your Frozen Heart

Cold Duke of the North, but this time, the Duke is a lady with flowing white locks.

16 Under the Oak Tree

Under the Oak Tree

The ML is the Lord over some land that is considered in the “north,” so it does count according to my rules and I’m including it, but idk... The “Northern Duke” vibes just aren’t there for me. He's got more Southern Duke vibes tbh

17 The Eighth Bride

The Eighth Bride

He's like the Beast, from Beauty and the Beast, but his curse isn't physically visible, he hunts monsters, and he's a cold Duke of the North™

18 The Fake Duchess In Distress

The Fake Duchess In Distress

Definite Duke of the North. Cold, hard, 'barbarian', ML with black hair and red eyes. People make fun of his goofy looking haircut, but personally, it's really grown on me and I like him in glasses

19 The Villainess Lives Again

The Villainess Lives Again

Is technically a Grand Duke of the North. There is barely any mention of this for like 40 some chapters, but it does get there. The Duke of the North vibes are fairly subtle though.

20 Grand Duchess of the North, It's Cold

Grand Duchess of the North, It's Cold

Another Grand Duke of the North. Manhwa authors are really feeding me well ☺️

21 Lips Upon a Sword's Edge

Lips Upon a Sword's Edge

Grand Duke of the Northern Empire. Silver hair. Perfect for this trope

22 Lady Crystal Is a Man

Lady Crystal Is a Man

The MC is actually a man that's been living as though he was born female for his own protection and the Duke of the North is… well, it’s kinda a spoiler, but let's just say that this is not BL.

23 Brother Knows Best

Brother Knows Best

This Duke is known as the “monster of the North” and the FL really wants him just to herself as her own personal slave— whoops, sorry, husband? Both?

24 Princess of the Animals

Princess of the Animals

He’s not a Duke of the North, but he is a prince of the Northerners. It counts according to my rules

25 Hawar in the Winter Garden

Hawar in the Winter Garden

It’s too soon to know if he’s a prince of “the north”, but he has white hair, it’s known for being wintery and cold there

26 The Unintentionally Ideal Adopted Daughter

The Unintentionally Ideal Adopted Daughter

The FL’s adoptive father is the Duke of Vellatoux, which rules over the Winter Forest which protects the North. The FL supposedly later becomes the leader of the household, which would make her the Duchess of the North (I'm guessing).

27 Hokuou Kizoku to Moukinzuma no Yukiguni Karigurashi

Hokuou Kizoku to Moukinzuma no Yukiguni Karigurashi

The rare story about wholesome Northerners being wholesome and doing wholesome things. I haven't read it yet and I don't think they're technically nobles, but shush... just enjoy

28 Finding Camellia

Finding Camellia

it's basically irrelevant to the story, he could've been the Duke of the southwest and it would change nothing, but he is technically the son of the Duke of the North

29 The Secret of House Francesca

The Secret of House Francesca

She is part of the family that rules the northern provinces, her proximity from the title of Duke/Duchess of the North depends on where you are in the story

30 Shall We Bathe, Your Grace?

Shall We Bathe, Your Grace?

a duke of the north that on paper fits the stereotype, but he has basically zero duke of the north vibes. I love him anyway

31 He's Just My Brother, Your Grace!

He's Just My Brother, Your Grace!

32 My Master, the Wolf Queen

My Master, the Wolf Queen

So not a duke or duchess, but she is the Wolf Queen and Iron Empress, known for being very cold and from a very snowy and icy region that I assume is considered north (don't read it though, it's honestly so bad)

33 My Prince's Healing Touch

My Prince's Healing Touch

This is kind of like a Northern Noble™ double header. The Grand Duke of the north is the FL’s grandfather and the ML is the prince, who ends up having to call the north home (for reasons)

34 The Archvillain's Young Patron

The Archvillain's Young Patron

This kid is like 15 and from the first panel I knew he was a cursed Duke of the North lol

35 The Evil Princess Dreams of a Gingerbread House

The Evil Princess Dreams of a Gingerbread House

Another cold Duke of the North™, but he's just a little baby one that is also somehow already a Vice Commander of the military??? Idk, these stories are getting a little out of control tbh

36 So I Married the Abandoned Prince

So I Married the Abandoned Prince

37 The Heiress's Double Life

The Heiress's Double Life

38 The Male Lead's Little Lion Daughter

The Male Lead's Little Lion Daughter

39 Becoming the Lady of the Cursed Ducal House

Becoming the Lady of the Cursed Ducal House

She is married to this Duke of the North. His family is cursed. There are dragons, which is kinda uncommon for this trope, so that's fun

40 Why Are You Obsessed With Your Fake Wife?

Why Are You Obsessed With Your Fake Wife?

Why is he obsessed with his fake wife? Because he's a cold Northern Noble, babe. That's what they do

41 Like Wind on a Dry Branch

Like Wind on a Dry Branch

42 My Alternate Ending

My Alternate Ending

There is a Grand Duke of the Northern regions. He’s not the main character though. He was one of the OFL’s love interests. It honestly barely counts, but I like to cover all my bases

43 Patience, My Lady!

Patience, My Lady!

Rose is the Lord of White, which is the Northern kingdom that is always covered in snow. She's incredible and one of my favorite FLs of all time. Highly recommend this one

44 The Fake Lady of House Silkisia

The Fake Lady of House Silkisia

It's interesting that he's a northern noble with magic *fire* powers and she's southern and has magic *ice* powers. Maybe this takes place in the southern hemisphere idk

45 Forget My Husband, I'll Go Make Money

Forget My Husband, I'll Go Make Money

“Barbarian” Northern prince that kills monsters and is cold and standoffish ✅. Duke of the North vibes otherwise? Nonexistent. From his design alone you would assume western Asian or North African, or just generally "south" (although I suppose it could be north if they're in the southern hemisphere and there nothing north of the equator they care about??)

46 Cross My Heart and Hope to Die

Cross My Heart and Hope to Die

Funnily enough, this one has light brown hair and is a sweet adorable teddy bear. Weird. I know

47 Disobey the Duke if You Dare

Disobey the Duke if You Dare

48 Contract Marrying Because I Am Terminally Ill

Contract Marrying Because I Am Terminally Ill

49 The Villainess's Blind Date Is Too Perfect

The Villainess's Blind Date Is Too Perfect

He is the lord and protector of the north, they guard the borders from demons, you know the drill. Black hair, black eyes, very handsome. We love to see it

50 The House of Diana's Choice

The House of Diana's Choice

Not to reveal too much too early, but a person that may or may not be related to the FL is the of the noble household that protects the north and the northern border from demonic monsters
