Norn9

Jun 14, 2017

Right, it's confession time for me. If you have been reading my reviews than you may have noticed that I tend to rip the anime a new one. There is a reason for this though and it has to do with the fact that I can't turn my brain off when watching anime. I can't ignore the stupid shown in the anime and this is a problem as most anime are very stupid indeed.

In this case I'm not talking about a 90 pound girl catching a multi-ton cruise missile and throwing it back. Yes, it is stupid but it is a stupid that I'll allow. It's anime. Things like this are normal here and I'm pretty much fine with it. It annoys me to be sure but I will not rant about it.

So, having explained this lets rip into this anime shall we? Just a heads up: There will most probably be spoilers. The more I hate an anime the more spoilers there will be.

ART: The art is decent enough but there were a few glitches where the movement was off. I think that this was due to the angle used in showing the shot but otherwise it looked good. Character design was....a bit monotone. At times I has trouble figuring out who I was seeing in the shot. Again this was due to poor choices in coloring. When you blast everything in white light and you have a number of blond characters than I will get confused.

SOUND: Again no complaints from me. I barely remember any of the tunes used and they were bland enough that I prefer it that they don't pollute my memory.

CHARACTERS: Main character is the Koharu. She is amazing! I have yet to see such a powerful character be so useless in an anime. With powerful I mean her ability to incinerate everything with fire.

Kakeru can grow stuff and becomes Koharu's love interest in this story. Do not be fooled by his cheerfulness as deep down he is a massive emo.

There are many other characters and they are basically useless. You could cut most of them from the anime and not lose a thing.

STORY:  Koharu has lived alone for years but as she turns 17 she prepares to go to Norn9, as predicted by a traveler. They appear and they take her away to a wondrous ship. There she will learn about her destiny and her role in the world.

RANT: I feel like it time I explained something about how I watch most anime. In the past I used to dabble in writing fiction and I quickly discovered that I sucked. Hard. But it does allow me to appreciate a good story. Your story can have as much or as little plot as you want but the important thing is to do it well.

One of the hardest things to do as a writer is to create a world for your story to take place in. The hardest thing to do is to explain this world to your readers so that they can get immersed in it.

You, as the writer, know everything there is to know about this world. Every nook every cranny. I, as a reader, do not know a thing so I'm depending on you to tell me about it.

So when I start to watch an anime I immediately start looking around at the world. So the first thing I see is Koharu walking through an orchard wearing an uniform. She is surrounded by mountains and the leafless trees are covered by snow as they are weight down by apples and ....Wait, what?!

Apples in the middle of winter? How is that even...Oh. I have just been informed that it is spring. Where I life the trees start to get leaves and flowers in spring while the apples won't be ripe untill summer.

So these trees ripe in a different season? Why don't they have any leaves? What is going on? Oh, God! My brain, it's melting! How long have I been watching.... 5 MINUTES? FUCK!

This anime was amazin in that every twist, every extra bit of information given was stupid beyond belief. It either created a plothole you could drive a truck through or faltly contradicted something else.

Ladies and gentlemen....This anime managed to break me. I gave up making sense of the stupid and just sat back to watch this trainwreck plow on. You know what happened? I discovered something: This anime is comedy GOLD!

Get your friends, get plastered and pop in this little gem. You will laugh your asses off.

Let me explain how this works. In the final scene you have Koharu pining away because Kakeru was lost in the finale of the show. 6 months later she finally decides to get off her ass and go back to Norn9. Once there she starts to life there among the ruins.

Then, suddenly, an aircraft starts to swoop in. It lands and spits out Kakeru. The music swells as he explains how he was found and nursed to health. They embrace and the anime does its best to coax a few tears from you. It succeeded as I was laughing so hard I cried.

You see, he was found by some of her fellow crew members and instead of telling her, so that she would rush to his side to nurse him back to health, they told her nothing. These guys were her friends, the people she trusted above all others and they let her believe he was dead or lost. I would have paid to have him show up and find her in the arms of another man about to be married!

1/10 story
7/10 animation
