Mukashi Kaita Gehin na Manga

Jan 15, 2021

It's a 12 page oneshot about a dude who has a discussion with his dick. For the premise it has, it's rather tame. It's not sexy, not funny and it's not very interesting in general. Looking it up will probably take longer than actually reading it, and it isn't really worth the effort.

Grashros

Dec 1, 2020

Grashros is a prehistorical manga about a guy who wants to kill a mammoth. However, while that seems like a normal concept, the actual manga is pretty damn weird. And honestly, not the good kind of weird. Note: due to the nature of the manga, keeping this completely spoiler-free is impossible. Read at your own risk! It all starts out as a pretty normal story to show the clan of Akuu, our MC. Because he was born during the wrong night, Akuu is considered to be a cursed child who will bring calamity to the clan. And obviously, calamity does come and it takes the shape of a gigantic mammoth. After... See full review

The Ordeals of Regional Knight Hans

Sep 16, 2020

The Suffering of Local Knight Hans shows the story of Hans, a war hero in a medieval fantasy world, whose rather simple life in a village at the border of the kingdom gets disrupted due to the appearance of multiple Japanese people with rather extreme abilities. The plot is rather simple, and mostly uses the appearance of a new Japanese  or a foreign threat to keep the story going. This makes the story rather predictable at times and dull at others, while just being barely good enough to keep being entertained. The thing that makes the manga more readable is the character interactions. The characters... See full review

Mashle: Magic and Muscles

Sep 6, 2020

Mashle is a comedy battle shounen manga that parodies the Harry Potter series as well as other shounen series. While being familiar with the Harry Potter universe may be beneficial, knowing general fantasy and shounen tropes will be more important however. Our protagonist, Mash Vandead, is a young guy who is hidden in the woods by his father because he doesn't have a lightning mark on his face - which shows to everyone that he is about the only person around who can't use magic. To conquer this weakness, he is made to train his body. Which leads to his current state, where he is almost the... See full review

Her Majesty's Swarm (Light Novel)

Sep 1, 2020

Review after volume 1 Her Majesty’s Swarm (HMS) is an isekai light novel featuring a MC who is a girl who spent massive amounts of time playing a certain RTS game. She is then sent to another world with only part of her memories, where she becomes queen of the Arachnea, a playable faction made up of a bug-like race (the most prevalent ones are described as a mix of ants, spiders and scorpions) that desires nothing but to destroy the enemy. The demon lord-esque setting has been done before in isekai, but HMS does have a couple of interesting elements. For one, the Swarm has a sort of collective... See full review

Pygmalion

Jul 3, 2020

Pygmalion is a gory horror manga in which mascots turn into monsters and start killing everyone in some big cities in Japan. It swiftly becomes one of the many trope-filled splatfest manga out there, but it's not unenjoyable. There's at least a certain degree of tension as to which characters will survive, the protagonists aren actuallly sympathetic and not stupid idiots and the progression of reveals regarding the "mystery of the mascots"is actually handled well. While it felt kind of rushed, one could argue that this works in the manga's favor: the quick pace is a lot better than having things... See full review

Pandamic

Jul 1, 2020

Pandamic is a mascot horror manga about mascot who kill people and zombify humans by giving them panda heads. It's also quite bad. The manga start by establishing that our MC is the most unremarkable, dull, forgettable and uninteresting guy I have seen in any work of fiction I read during the last year. Behold this marvel of humanity: The author saw fit to have him be definied as a "forgettable bullied kid", and so we shall swiftly forget him. In any case, this dude's called Minita, which is apparently already a reason to be bullied in Japan. Not sure why, but anyway... Minita has one job... See full review

Wakeari Madoushi wa Shizuka ni Kurashitai

Jun 14, 2020

The Mage With Special Circumstances Wants to Live Peacefully is a short manga about the only female mage in the world. Sadly, whle the concept and the world the author built are quite interesting, the manga falls flat due to an overabundance of the most annoying tropes, mainly shoujo ones:  the MC is basically powerless even though she should have the power to protect herself according to the canon, the girl gets dragged around by the main love interest, and obviously we need some sexual harassment of the MC so the guy can come save her. My advice: skip it. Surely there's better shoujo fantasy out... See full review

Frieren: Beyond Journey's End

May 17, 2020

Frieren at the Funeral is a new (currently only 3 chapters), interesting and charming fantasy manga with a rather unique idea. Because, rather than following the hero and his party while they journey to go defeat the demon king and save the world, this manga follows another staple of fantasy manga: the elf in the party! More specifically, we follow the elf mage Frieren as she travels in search of new types of magic, after the world has been saved. As years can pass by in a panel, and decades in a page, it's still quite a nice feeling to see her go back to her old friends - even though they changed very... See full review

Dolls (Yumiko KAWAHARA)

May 15, 2020

A rather boring collection of "horror" stories featurings "plant dolls", basically living dolls. It tries to be unsettling, but my mind always went towards what Junji Itou would do with the story - leading to a huge disappointment at the end of every chapter, when it turns out to be less interesting. Dropped it after 1 volume.

Torako, Anmari Kowashicha Dame da yo

May 14, 2020

Torako, Don't Break Everything! is a manga about what is basically a female MC of a battle shounen who gets stuck in a manga in a more "realistic" setting - leaving us with a girl who is hopelessly strong and a tad clumsy, and tries to become friends with the delinquent girls of her school.

Plot-wise there isn't much more to it. It's just lighthearted fluff, comedy and ecchi. But the character interactions made it fun while it lasted, and the artist is also rather good at drawing funny facial expressions or sexy bodies.

Sadly the manga ended too soon, because the magazine went... See full review

Yakuza Reincarnation

May 14, 2020

Ninkyou Tensei / Yakuza Reincarnation is a story about – you guessed it – a yakuza who gets reincarnated in a fantasy world… as a young princess. Yeah, that last part was probably less obvious. It’s a rather new series (currently only 9 chapters at a monthly release schedule) but it has been very enjoyable already and looks promising for the future as well. This manga avoids a lot of the common traps that drag down other isekai. For starters, because we don’t get a self-insert young male blackhaired main character. Instead, we get an old yakuza with a decent backstory and a... See full review

Noblesse

May 11, 2020

Noblesse is a manhwa about Cadis Etrama di Raizel (or Rai), a guy belonging to a race of not-vampires, who wakes up after sleeping for 820 years. The start of the series is honestly quite charming, despite the rough art. There’s a lot of humor, and the characters are funny and/or mysterious. Rai decides to go to the school that was built by his servant/butler Frankenstein, and it’s nice to see him trying to live a life in a modern world and interact with some of the children of the school. It’s very much a slice of life with some slight supernatural elements. However, it swiftly turns... See full review

Gal Cleaning!

May 11, 2020

Gal Cleaning is definitely the number one manga I've read that got the biggest backlash from its readers. Why fans where unhappy? Well... The first part of the manga, meaning chapter 1-8.5, is nice fluffy stuff about a shy guy called Kaji who somehow ends up cleaning a classmate gal's house. We get the usual lighthearted romcom antics and some simple cleaning tips to go with it. All is fine and wholesome, and the readers prepare for the inevitable other fluffiness and romantic developments. But then we get to chapter 8.6, aka the start of the mangaka's spiral into madness. This Sword Deity Refuses to Be a Freeloader

May 11, 2020

I read this up till chapter 80, and I have no idea why I stuck with it for this long... it's pretty shit tbh. Story Chu Qin, a martial artist of over 300 years old tries to go to some kind of heavenly realm but instead ends up turning back time on his body and entering another world, turning him into his 17-year old self in a world where women are physically stronger than men, openly chase after men, and do other things that are currently linked to male stereotypes. It's quite a pity that we don't get more of the story of Chu Qin's journey before he ended up in this alternate earth, because what we get... See full review

Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba

Apr 29, 2020

Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba is a manga by Gotouge Koyoharu, published in Weekly Shounen Jump and adapted into an anime by ufotable in 2019. When the manga started in 2016, I picked up as well. It wasn’t all that popular at the time though, and I personally also found it quite rough, making me drop the series after about 15 chapters. When the anime aired in 2019, however, it became so popular that I decided to give it a try as well. And well, I’m glad I did, because it made me decide to read the manga again – which was a great decision to be honest. Story-wise, this is a very... See full review

Keijo!!!!!!!!

Apr 28, 2020

Considering the translations for Keijo!!!!!!!! are finally completed, I figured it's about time this manga got a review here as well. Those who have been following anime news in the last couple of years will probably have heard about the anime adaptation, which spread the wacky premise to a broader audience. For those who haven't heard of it: Keijo is a sports manga where female athletes in bikini have to push others from various types of platforms into the water... but they can only hit others using their ass/hips and breasts. Some people are probably turned off by the very premise. And honestly, that's... See full review

Latna Saga: Survival of a Sword King

Apr 23, 2020

Survival Story of a Sword King in a Fantasy World is a surprisingly light-hearted fantasy romp about a guy who first goes through decades of despair, to finally end up in his target fantasy world where he turns out to be basically One Punch Slash Man. While initially our Sword King Han-Bin gets thrown into that world as a pawn of some manipulative gods, that plot thread takes a back seat to show how he has a lot of trouble to function in this magic-based society. Which leads to some hilarious moments, as he teams up with some interesting people to work as an "adventurer". Pacing of the story is... See full review

Father, Unrivaled

Apr 21, 2020

Peerless Dad is a rather unique series, as far as Asian martial arts stories are concerned. Mainly because of something you see in the title: our MC, the warrior Noh, is a dad! Well, at least he is for all of the series except the first chapter. Another thing that sets this series apart is that our MC - contrary to the word Peerless in the title - isn't the strongest in the world or something. It's actually because he became disillusioned that he met his wife and became a dad in the first place. Of course, it wouldn't be a martial arts series if the dad weren't very strong though, but because of... See full review

Apr 16, 2020

It's an ok isekai story about some gyaru in another world. It's got some funny moments, but is extremely light on story and worldbuilding. Also it got cancelled, so the last chapter kind of shows a summary of what should have happened. Overall not really worth picking up but not a huge waste of time either.

Tower of God

Apr 7, 2020

Basically it's a cool fantasy story without any of the very overused "medieval fantasy" tropes. Mostly because there's also technology. Anyway, the world building is pretty neat and doesn't overly rely on exposition. The fights are also cool, with unique strategies because they're often incorporated into a game or competition, so just being the strongest isn't enough. The story is handled well and feels like it just flows naturally and is kept interesting by dropping information on the right spots without being overly reliant on exposition. The characters are interesting as well, they all have... See full review

Heavenly Demon Reborn!

Jan 12, 2020

Chronicles of Heavenly Demon is one of many martial arts stories where the MC gets reincarnated for the sole purpose of getting revenge. The most interesting aspect of this one is that the guy becomes a member of a "Demonic" cult in his second life, which at least gives it a bit of a twist. As is tradition, the MC swiftly becomes quite OP compared to his peers. So if you like stories where the main character is an arrogant guy who crushes people who are supposed to be at or above his level, you might like this one as well. Personally I really like seeing the reactions of the bystanders in those... See full review

Love in Hell: Death Life

Jan 11, 2020

So this is a sequel of sorts to Love in Hell, which is a pretty good manga about life in hell. As that one was cut short, I was looking forward to reading the sequel as well, but ended up being pretty disappointed... for one, Death Life is about an entirely different cast, with the characters from the first part only showing up occasionally. This was pretty disappointing, as I really liked the cast of part one, while the new cast wasn't as fun in my opinion. Secondly, the manga was a lot less funny than the first part. Maybe it's because a lot of the humor is reused, but I didn't actually laugh, which is a... See full review

4 Cut Hero

Nov 22, 2019

4 Cut Hero is a fun fantasy manhwa that I recommend reading because it breaks the mould which was created by the huge number of standard fantasy manga and manhwa we've been getting in recent years. To be honest, I feel like it's way too easy to spoil just that bit too much, so I hope I can get some people sold on it by talking about some of the points it's great at. For one thing, it's not an isekai, reincarnation, time travel or other "second chance at life" story. The world is also not a generic ripoff of Dragon Quest and other such RPGs. It's a world with a wider variety of less clearly... See full review
