I'm sorry to hear that you didn't like the ending, and how you felt about characters getting mistreated. I feel it's actually extremely hard to satisfy the fans of the franchise at this point. So I understand that there will be a lot of people who will feel disappointed with this movies' outcome. I'm just not one of them.

There is a documentary on Youtube about Anno and the making of this movie, and I do feel that he was struggling to get from point A to point B, while also running out of time again. But I do think this was the ending he had envisioned for the franchise. I kinda feel that he was struggling with the fight scenes, where he was trying to find a balance between the proper 3D animations, and the nod towards the live action stuff they were trying to pay tribute to. Luckily we can see more of this with the Gridman stuff :)

I'm sure there are tons of theories regarding Evangelion, I'm just sharing how I personally experienced the story. Like I said, there were basically two endings available...but the "Adam and Eve", after the failed Adam and Lilith world was the ending that really made the most sense. And, again, both Asuka and Rei were never good choice to begin with.

I hope we don't get a follow-up show or movie. If it does happen, it simply has to be Anno. Knowing that a perfectionist he is, I can imagine that he'll always want to 'fix' certain parts of his movies... But I really wouldn't trust anybody else with his project.

I saw your reply to my review. I'll try to explain why this happened.

You're right. If Mari wasn't cloned, she would have been Gendo and Yui's age. Since the Eva's can only be controlled by teens, which means that she has also been cloned. Yui is also the one who helped to bring Yui and Gendo together.

Throughout the series, there has been a joke how Shinji doesn't need a girlfriend, but how he needs a mother. Shinji simply can't be with Rei (technically a relationship with his mother) and he can't be with Asuka (they simply can't be together, a cat and dog relationship). There were only two options for Shinji, which was either to be with nobody (I would have been okay with that), or be with Mari. Since Shinji is considered a god (resetting the world), Mari symbolizes the virgin Mary. She represents a fresh start and moving on, but also still represents that motherly figure that Asuka said he needed.

Originally, Mari was created to just break all the heavy tension, but they gave her a good purpose in the end.
