I grew up on Scifi and fantacy. Star Wars, Star Trek, LOTR, Alien (Xenomorphs), Spideman, X-Men, and Bat-Man (the list could go on for days). I grew up playing with Shogun Warriors, The original Alien movie Xenomorph action figue... and of course Star Wars action figures. Then came He-Man, Transformers, and G.I. Joe. The 80's was a great time to grow up. Also: way to many of our animals growing up were named after LOTR characters! lol
But I'm akso an Isekai fan. I've been one without knowing it since childhood. Wizard of Oz, Tron, Chronicles of Narnia, Land of the Lost, ect. Now I use the term like it's always been part of my vocabulary. Voltron (lions and vehicles) was the 1st animes I can remember watching. My brother was into a lot of anime that I couldn't stand. I hated Yugioh and Sailor Moon! Wasn't for me. So I didn't pay much attention to anime until he introduced me to Dragonball Z. The Frieza saga made me a fan. Then I watched EVERYTHING Dragonball I could get my hands on. I had the beautiful buttonup shirts with Saiyans covering every inch (that I wore as actual dress shirts). But most of the other anime I came across wasn't my thing. I despise the animation styles of the late 90's and early 2000's. If I don't like the art style... I ain't watching it!
But then the movie Ready Player One came out. After watching it numerous times, I found out it was based on a book. I instantly fell in love with the book (Player 2 as well). I did the same thing with the John Carter movie. I found the books, and dove in. I was suddenly on a kick of only wanting to find similar works. So I looked up "similar to" and ONE anime really stood out: Overlord! I was officially addicted! Now there isn't a dubbed Isekai from 2010 forward that I haven't at least tried to watch. Doesn't mean I loved every single one. Not every Isekai is equal. lol
Then I learned they were all based on Manga & Light Novels. I also grew up a comicbook geek. But I'm not a fan of black and white comics (so manga isn't my thing either). But the Light Novels are a different story! Now I'm also into Western litRPG. If it's Isekai... I'm interested. I can't do the subbed anime though. I can't keep up with watching it AND reading the text. But I do the same thing when someone has on the CC. I quit watching the show, and just end up reading all the text. I know... I'm picky and quirky. My brother doesn't have that problem. His tastes are much more eclectic.
My son's tatse is also more eclectic. Why am I the annoyingly picky one? lol He's introduced me to other animes that I've enjoyed too. There are a lot that he loves that I just can't get into either. That's why I have WAY MORE anime in the 1/2 star rating than any other. But Isekai is by far, my go-to genre. The Light Novels of Overlord, Reincarnated as a Slime, and Arifureta are at the top of my list of Japanese works. The Arifureta anime was much worse after getting into the LNs! It's not the abomination that the Eragon movie was. but I understood the hate for it after getting into the LNs! The Eragon movie is a whole different story when it comes to ruining a GREAT book! Inheritance Cycle is one of my absolute favorites! As much as the John Carter movie differed from the book... I still enjoy the movie (and look at it as a alternate universe version of the story). It's nowhere as good as the book though. But the movie/TV versions never are.
So I "patiently" wait for new dubbed Isekai animes to come along; so that I can binge watch an entire season at a time. Why isn't the Western market putting out Isekai cartoons???!!!
