Bara is similar to Yaoi (also known as Boys’ Love or BL in Japan), and depicts homosexual relationships between men. However, unlike Yaoi which is written by women, for women, Bara is written by men, for men. Characters in these manga have a distinct style and are usually burly, muscular or hairy, and typical uke and seme dynamics don’t apply. On Anime-Planet, we double tag Bara with Yaoi for discoverability.

These anime have a black and white palette. Occasional colored sequences might appear, but the majority of the animation is solely black and white.

These anime feature multiple Mecha which can Transform and attach to each other in modular fashion, creating larger and more powerful super-machines that can act in new ways.

Harder, better, faster, stronger. Cyborgs are organic beings enhanced by mechanical prosthetics, granting them abilities beyond those of mere mortals. Where does the man end and the machine begin?

Dinosaurs are a broad range of reptilian or bird-like creatures which generally went extinct before the rise of mankind. These anime center on the impact of dinosaurs - whether reimagined, extinct, or living and breathing alongside humans, and may feature dinosaurs as major characters.

Dragons are huge and mighty serpentine mythological creatures, often seen as being magical in nature. These anime center on the impact of dragons - whether reimagined, extinct, or living and breathing alongside humans, and may feature dragons as major characters.

Horror anime create an atmosphere of unease. Like Mystery anime, they encourage viewers to learn more about their world... but there may be secrets that are better left unexplored. Through eerie music and sounds, visceral or disturbing imagery, or startling moments, works of Horror make you worry about what gruesome thing is coming next.

Insects are the primary component of these anime, whether they're giant, man-eating monsters or household pests of another variety.

These anime showcase maids: women - or rarely men - who are employed to help cook, clean, run errands, or anything else that their master requires. The anime might also feature a Master-Servant Relationship. Alternately, maids might be employees of a theme cafe where cosplay is required to please customers.

Mecha are self-propelling machines that are modeled after humans; some can change into multiple, non-humanoid formats as well. They're usually controlled by an internal pilot or by remote, but are sometimes sentient beings that move autonomously. A mecha's size ranges from bulky, wearable armor to a massive, towering contraption and beyond. While mecha have a wide range of applications, such as making manual labor easier, they are most commonly portrayed as heavily-armed war machines.

Merfolk are human above and fish below, and generally can breathe both above and below the water. These anime showcase mermaids and mermen either as the primary cast or as the story's primary theme and focus.

These anime contain no dialogue.

Unlike their earthbound counterparts, these anime take place in the depths of space: from planets in the outermost reaches of the galaxy, to space stations in orbit around Earth, to ships that travel the solar system, or anything in between.

A reverse harem includes three or more characters who potentially show romantic interest in a female protagonist. The sex, gender, or orientation of the harem members is irrelevant as long as they exclusively, or at least primarily, are vying for the affections of the same individual - who may or may not reciprocate towards one, several, or none of these romantic rivals.

Robots are machines that can be programmed to do a human's bidding. They often have an artificial intelligence, similar to their human-like Android counterparts; depending on their programming, this intelligence can at times create conflicts against their creators' wishes. Unlike their partially human Cyborg brethren, robots are entirely mechnaical.

Yuri is a genre that depicts homosexual relationships between women. Japan typically uses this single category for all forms of these relationships, sexual or not. In the West, the term Shoujo-ai categorizes stories that focus on the emotional aspects of the relationships, while Yuri categorizes more of the sexual aspects and explicit content. As Anime-Planet's audience is mostly based in the West, we use the Western definition for both Yuri and Shoujo-ai.

In these titles, Space Pirates pillage and plunder spaceships throughout the galaxy, rather than sailing the seas like their swashbuckling brethren.
