Gyo

If you are looking for a manga that is strange/macabre, then Junji Ito is your man.  Gyo is just one example of his work that shows us that even the most ludicrous ideas can be truly interesting if done correctly. STORY: 7/10The basic premise of Gyo is that fish mysteriously obtain insect-like legs and start overrunning Japan. Tadashi and his girlfriend, Kaori, must survive this insanity while trying to find the source of it and end it. As mentioned before, this idea is very strange, but Junji Ito does a magnificent job of making it work.  The first volume does have some moments... X/1999 is one of CLAMP's earlier manga, and is not one to be missed.  This series is by far one of my personal favorites, and definitely is sure to please both fans of Shonen and Shoujo alike.STORY: 8/10The story itself is relatively simple:  The main character (Kamui) is destined to determine the fate of the planet.  He must choose either to side with the Dragons of Heaven, who aim to save mankind, or the Dragons of Earth, who are attempting to save the planet itself, which will lead to the end of mankind.  His decision will affect both sides along with his friend Fuuma and Fuuma's... Bleach

Story: I have a lot of nostalgia for Bleach. It was my first venture into the world of both shounen anime and manga, and was what got me started on a journey that – even today – has me devouring whatever I can get my hands on. As such, it pains me to repress my inner fangirl and actually look at this series critically. At the time of writing this review, four hundred and twenty-three chapters have been released, the story thus far has reached a definite conclusion, and mangaka Tite Kubo has announced that a further two arcs spanning the best part of another four years will follow. It... See full review

Story: Very engaging plot. It's drama, comedy and romance done well within the fashion industry (a nice twist). The relationships are twisted but have charm in a way. I enjoyed the story and I couldn't stop reading it even though I needed to sleep. The ending has a bittersweet taste to it. It's well paced and developed well with unexpected twists. Although I did get annoyed at times, I still liked it. I would recommend this to others who were looking for something for an older demographic. Warning: they are some sexual scenes that I felt were awkward. The dialog was just weird for those scenes. Art... See full review

HOLD IT! Stop right there. Yes, you. I'm going to be blunt with you, Law of Ueki is not for ANYONE who is not REALLY into Shounen. Even if you're a casual shounen fan you more than likely won't see that much in Law of Ueki. Now on the other hand... if you love Shounen and all of its cliches like I do, page after page will be flying across your finger tips. Law of Ueki is very similar to another series close to my heart, Shaman King (Gash Bell is also a very similar work, check them both out). If the art doesn't seem reminiscent to you, then just wait till I start talking about the story. OUR HERO Kousuke... See full review

A manga that is definitely worth reading as it encompasses a character who sets out a journey to find the perfect girl who had the perfect/ideal parts he was looking for. Upon arriving at Tokyo, Hachibei Maeda finds himself living in a shed near a girls' dorm in which each of the girls who lived there had one of his ideal parts. Of all the mangas I've read, Battle Royale has to be the one which took me most by surprise. This manga really gets its claws into you from the beginning- I began reading it intending only to read a few chapters but ended up gripped for the whole 119-chapter saga. Why, you might ask? Because Battle Royale is an extraordinary horror manga, in that it has the strongest cast of characters I've ever encountered- even minor characters are explored and fleshed out, so that we really get a sense of who they are and were and how they are affected by the Program; the twisted version of reality TV in which a randomly... Story: It took a fair amount of time from my introduction to anime to properly start enjoying manga, and I generally started with series whose anime counterparts I liked. Despite this, I still hesitated to pick up Fullmetal Alchemist until the 2009 series, Brotherhood, began and caught my eye in spectacular fashion. Hearing that it was faithful to the manga’s plotline and being apprehensive about the anime’s release in the first place, I decided to give it a shot – and boy, was that ever a good decision! Story: How does one describe the story of One Piece? One can easily write a description in a single sentence. It's a pirate manga with a crew of goodly pirates who spend their days fighting other pirates, overthrowing corrupt governments, and generally being badass, with plenty comedy and fantastic elements thrown in. However, that fails to truly describe what One Piece is. One Piece is a heartwarming tale of achievement despite the odds. It is a tale of Luffy daring to dream the impossible, and accomplishing it, again and again. It is an utterly outrageous comedy that will have you laughing every minute... See full review

Story: This manga revolves around the relationship between a tall girl and short guy and how they're constantly picked on because of their height difference. Honestly, this completely changed my stance on not having a relationship with a guy who's shorter than me. Plenty of females, including myself at one point, would never dream of dating a guy who's shorter. That would be so unattractive, not romantic, especially since a tall girl and short guy would not look like a cute couple. However, this manga manages to create a relationship between a tall girl and short guy without preaching and making us feel... See full review

Out of the handful of Clamp series I've read so far, Clover is by far my favorite.  In fact, I must look into getting my own copy of the compilation book, as I've nearly ruined the one I checked out from the library.  You're probably wondering why I've nearly destroyed the book (actually, it isn't that bad, but it's certainly not in the brand-spanking condition I checked it out in).  I can't help reading it, for three main reasons.First, it's one of those stories that needs to be read several times to ensure you've captured all the details.  Read it once, and you have a decent idea of... I loved this. I thought the artwork was refreshing, not very usual. I enjoyed the story too, I didn't find it as boring as others did, but I do think it's only really for the romantic type. It hasn't got much of anything else. Its a good quick read. It's one of my favorites, so I'd recommend it to the people who like darker romance. If you're not into that, you probably won't be into this. The basics of it, is that this vampire became drunk and ended up passing out or something of the sort (which is really stupid, imo.) and was brought to Jae by her friend. It ends up the two begin to live with each other... See full review

I loved this manga... what there was of it. I'm not really a shoujo person, and the plot mildly resembled that of Inuyasha, but it could have been much better executed, especially with the characters.Unfortunately, the story just starts to get going when the manga is abruptly cut short.  The end of volume 1 introduces a whole group of interesting supporting characters, villains, backstory and potential plot.  Volume two makes the characters live happily ever after without ever mentioning any of the above again.I'd recomend reading it, but only if you can handle the dissapointment of the fact that... Some people might glance at this manga and dismiss it as fanservice-y, perverted, or whatever. But this manga actually goes much deeper than that. It has a lot of wisdom to say about growing up and how a young man should live their life. Normally, I would keep harem manga far away from a teenage boy (for obvious reasons.) This one, I wouldn't. Overall, I thought it was pretty sweet. I had my fan-girl moment at the end, but at the same time, I wasn't satisfied. It felt like a cliffhanger at the end, I minded and at the same time I didn't. It was a light romance manga, which I appreciated. There are a lot of good reviews on this manga online, but there are a few bad ones. Haruna was ditsy at moments which she shouldn't be at times, but I really loved her. In many ways, Haruna is unique. She was very outspoken about things and voiced her opinion many times. Story: I can’t honestly say that I have any particular criteria when it comes to deciding what manga to pick up; most of the time it boils down to whether the plot sounds vaguely interesting, if I liked the anime, or if it needs an entry on the site. So when it came to Project X: Cup Noodle my chain of reasoning went as follows: “Hmm it has an odd name and I do like instant ramen. Hang on… a manga about cup noodles?! Eh it’s only one volume and needs a synopsis. Sod it, why not?” Luckily this was one gamble that didn’t prove to be a complete waste of my... See full review

This story is classic if not, a little cliche. Eimi is one of my favorite characters, she has an absolute purity to her and a never ending energy. In addition, the setting is intriguing because though it is set at school, there are probably 3 total panels actually in school. It's all about the dorms! The mangaka had a wonderful way of modernizing and adding to the classic fairy tale without over-doing it. It's a breath of fresh air!

Then, while suffering from withdrawal from a nightly dose of my favourite pirates – and against my bank balance’s better judgement – I decided to pick up the manga. Fifty-four volumes later and I can now barely wait for the next part to come out here in the... See full review

Love Roma

I loved this manga. I have read a lot of stuff, at least in my eyes, over the past 1-2 years. And by far, this is a true romantic comedy. There isn't any focus on fan service or anything other than the story and characters. The whole romance was based on the two main characters (the male reminding me much of myself) understanding each other. Even though it looks less real than a lot of other manga, the story is much more real. I found myself laughing, going "Aww thats cute", and saying "Indeed". Recommend this definitely.

Death Note

Story: Death Note had an interesting and unique enough premise. A highly intelligent but bored teenager finds a notebook that can kill anyone who's name is written into it as long as the owner knows the name and face of who he wants dead. There are plenty more rules involved with using the notebook but that's the main one to know. The teen, nicknamed Kira, uses the notebook to kill criminals causing the police to get involved to stop him. The rest involves basically a cat-and-mouse chase to see whether Kira or L, a mastermind detective, and the police force will win out. The story started off refreshingly... See full review

So far, after reading the first 8 volumes, I am really enjoying this series. It's well written by Gosho Aoyama, and the artwork's inventive as well. What really stands out though are the numerous ways found to kill characters in interesting and inventive ways.I've long been a fan of murder mysteries, especially the short fiction which has been gracing the pages of pulp magazines such as Alfred Hitchcock's Mystery Magazine for several decades. So it should come as no surprise then that I love this series, as it's a full series of people getting axed (pardon the pun).I am reading the series as published by... See full review

Kare no Satsujin Keikaku

When I read the description for Kare no Satsujin Keikaku, I knew I had to read it. Being an aspiring seinen manga-ka, I had once drafted a story very similar in premise to this one-shot-- it was about a high school boy, happy with his life and quite "normal", who wanted to experience what it was like to kill someone. I had never heard of Kare no Satsujin Keikaku, although I had figured my idea wasn't completely original.Anyways, I was very happy with this manga. It brought up some interesting questions-- what do killers want others to think of them after they have committed their crimes? and who... See full review

Absolute Boyfriend

Story: Absolute Boyfriend is about a high school chick who is so desperate for a boyfriend that she actually buys one from a questionable catalogue and winds up with a "perfect" boyfriend who happens to be a robot, and of course, complication and drama ensues. Frankly, this story was fairly mediocre in plot. The plain, average girl has two guys madly in love with her for some non-stated reason even though she's pretty selfish, not smart, and is quite annoying. That said, the one reason that I rated this as high as I did is because the story kept me guessing. It's crazy, actually somewhat funny... See full review

I personnal think the story brings up a good concept of "you may be born into evil but that doesn't mean you are". Overall I think the story derector could have worked on the charaters better. I mean if you've live for thousands of years you wont think like a sixteen year old.
