Baki the Grappler

grimfangs's avatar
Nov 6, 2019

All spoilers are marked with strikethroughs. Caution advised while reading. Grappler Baki isn't that complex of an Anime. In fact, it is one of the more simpler ones with a very little story to it, and with an enhanced focus on action. While other anime such as Dragon Ball Z or Yu Yu Hakusho at least had a somewhat feasible backstory to them which made the anime worth watching even if you took out all the amazing action and hype from it, Grappler Baki doesn't really seem to have much of a basis in much of anything. Luckily, though, the anime isn't as much of an action-oriented mess like Black Lagoon from... See full review

Darker than Black

Herohades's avatar
Nov 5, 2019

I would love to give you a nice overview of Darker Than Black, and be able to talk to some extent about the wonderful intricacies of the plot. But that would require me to first figure out what the plot is going on about, which is way more complicated than it sounds.  I get the feeling that at some point the writer played through Dark Souls, and immidiately leaped out of their seat, yelling about how they have found the key to their next plot. So nearly all of the world-building of Darker Than Black is done in the very Souls-like style of not really explaining anything, instead letting the... See full review

I made an account just to review this anime! Overall: I gave this anime a 9.5/10 because I came in with very low expectations. Shoujo anime are usually kind of cliche and full of toxic stereotypes like damsels in distress or toxic masculine love interests, etc. However, Akatsuki no Yona went above and beyond my expectations! I also read the manga in about ~3 days (183 chapters) because it was just that good!! The story is very plot-centric and reminds me of Fushigi Yuugi, also a reverse harem anime with a similar (not as strong) female main character. I loved the balance of serious plot and comedic... So this could've easily gotten a high 9 or 10. But, the plot holes kinda hurt the overall a great bit.

The overall story is, some guy works at some robot company. He teams up with a girl robot to terminate other robots. In the story, after a number of years of existing robots go crazy and try to hurt everything around them (which is why they do what they do). Also after a given second, the robots can use their full strength. (It should be noted it sounds like the company still sells these robots) Beyond that it is a simple guy and girl falling for each other, guy finding out the girl will die, and... See full review

I don't mind this adapton to much, i think it's wort the watch. They did good with the main plot and the animaton. I've seen worse. The biggest problems i have with this is how they shoved like 100 pages of manga into a 30 minutes episode, and in doing so they lost so much of what the original story actualy is, the humor, the anticipaton, the relationships between the caraters is completley lost. And if they're going to continue this show, they either have to start anew or continue in the same style of glossing over all the small details that i love aboudt the manga.

First off, I'll be honest: I don't think I understand this Anime... ■■■ Story & Characters ■■■ This anime is a big parody on the isekai genre. It doesn't take itself seriously AT ALL, and it's more focussed on comedic elements than the whole isekai thing. There isn't much more story aside from the "Main character is dead and now inside another world" idea. Each episode has its own random, easygoing story. That is all fine, I love comedy, slice-of-life and I don't really like isekai, so I really expected to get some laughs here... But I... See full review

■■■ Story & Characters ■■■ This show is mainly focussed on characters, which I really liked. Most of the characters are unique enough, and pretty memorable. The story is used to drive the interactions between the characters, but the character development itself isn't very deep. The story is kinda dark, but they really try to keep it light-hearted by adding some comedy and character interaction. A few episodes in things start to change, and unfortunately I think that is where some issues appear: The second half of the anime feels pretty different from the first, and... See full review

Happiness Charge Pretty Cure!

Nov 4, 2019

I once stated in another review that Happiness Charge Precure had the tightest plotline of all the Pretty Cure series.  There was one other thing that I found fascinating.  While all the Precure teams deal with the conception of love, Happiness Charge dealt with the topic of boy-girl relationships. Let that sink in for a moment. Ever since I entered the mega-series with the Glitter Force adaptation, I felt Precuria was an anthem for the advocates of girl-power.  Strong males tend not to show up in these episodes.  In fact, I basically stalled my watching of Go! If you're a fan of Utapri, chances are you'll love this movie! I attended 4 screenings and what I can say it is definetly the kind of movie you would want to watch with an audience. In this movie, you are in the place of the fans cheering their boys on! So if you're in a theatre where people are cheering and waving their penlights it is very exciting as the movie was made for this, it's to be treated as a live show/live veiwing. After reading another review of the movie from a pretty empty theatre, I can say without it can change how someone views the movie entirely. The songs in the movie are shortened... See full review

This is a recap of the first story arc.  There's nothing new except some exposition dialogue from Tilarna, which mostly just covers skipped scenes, but does slip in two tiny tidbits.  So you don't have to watch the whole episode just for them, they are: Fairies are full citizens, but because of their size and appearance they are treated more like dogs and cats. Leahyah, Tilarna's fairy friend, used to entertain Tilarna with "the most magical dances" and bring Tilarna nuts that she had foraged when Tilarna was hungry.

One of the biggest tragedies of our current generation is how this show is perceived amongst the community. Because although Clannad certainly has its moments of sheer depression, there are also times of happiness, and joy, and so many other emotions that make the entire affair worth it.  Clannad tells the story of Tomoyo Okazaki, a high school senior with no motivation in life, who lives just to get through the day. That is, until he meets a girl, named Nagisa Furukawa, and suddenly finds his life a whole lot more interesting than it once was. And also way more supernatural than one would think... Herohades's avatar
Nov 3, 2019

I've oftern heard this show likened to Game of Thrones, a comparison that I believe never quite did Akama Ga Kill any justice, even before the Game of Thrones crapped out in its final seasons. Whereas Game of Thrones is more like a deadly traipse through a jungle, where every few steps are halted by someone losing their leg to a python, Akame Ga Kill is more like the story of Icarus; everything is great and majestic, until it is suddenly and very violently not. So yes, people die a lot in Akame Ga Kill, but seeing as how I like to avoid spoilers, I'll focus more on the starting plot rather than how it... See full review

There are some shows that you watch for the deep and well built narrative, that likeable and complex character, and the gorgeous animation, blended in with the powerful music. And there are others that you watch because Samuel L. Jackson voices one of the characters, and you really can't pass that by. Afro Samurai is the latter of these.  The plot basically revolves around these two headbands, one of which makes the wearer nearly a god, the second of which gives the wearer the power to kill the wearer of the first headband. Anohana: The Flower We Saw That Day

Herohades's avatar
Nov 3, 2019

There are a lot of shows that lean very hard into their whole "This is really sad" element of their plot. Shows like Clannad and Plastic Memories have become infamous for the pure destruction they waged on the emotions of their viewers. So a few writers came along and said, "Wait, if people like being sad, lets give them sad, and nothing else." And hence, Anohana was born.  The plot of the entire show is basically that there were a bunch of friends, who were not sad at all, until one of them dies, making them all very sad. One of the former friends, our MC, can now see the dead... See full review

Absolute Duo is one of those shows that is really really not very good, but you almost feel bad for it, because you know that it is at least trying. Underneath the cliches and fan service, there is a decent setup for a not half bad plo. Its just a shame that plot has already been done far better elsewhere.  Basically, the show takes place in one of those infamous anime weapon academy, where everyone is able to manifest a weapon out of their own spirit. But, low and behold, our MC, a tragedy-striken dude trying to move forward, discovers that his manifestation is, in fact, a shield. Hijinks, and a... See full review

There is a scene in the cultural touchstone that is Pulp Fiction, in which one of the characters is sent to assassinate another, and decides to make the situation more entertaining by messing with the soon to be dead guy. So there is this five minute scene of the audience watching as this dude screws around with a guy we all know is going to be shot to death, waiting for the moment when the shoe drops, so to speak. 91 Days is basically just that scene, but extended over several hours.  The classic mafia story, in which one family betrays another, occurs, leaving the MC, a lad named Avillo, as the only... Honestly, since this was a Netflix original anime, I didn't have high hopes OR expectations, to begin with. This anime was nothing spectacular, but it wasn't a disaster either(I've seen much worse). They had a good plot going, but some of the characters were just so annoying it was difficult for me to even watch without wanting to yell at them. The plot they had turned more into a "figuring out what happened in the past" and not as much action in the present. As this was one of my top animes I have watched this year, I guarantee that I am NOT overexaggerating in ANY part of this review, it's just that this anime was produced so well. Starting off with a simple story, the anime develops into something that transforms the characters, setting, while at the same time reflects what was happening to Japan in the past.  A young wandering girl known by the name of Dororo(presented as a boy) without parents comes across a mysterious person unable to speak, hear, see, taste, smell, and is missing multiple vital organs. Ben-To was an odd but surprisingly interesting anime. The premise of the entire thing made 0 sense to me and I felt like some parts of the story were not fully fleshed out. It did have some annoying times where characters would talk over each other and distract me (prob a personal thing) and the show seemed as if it didn't know which direction it wanted to take in terms of storylines. Despite this, I was still able to enjoy this anime from beginning to end. Had good characters, just a poorly explored storyline.

Story: As other before me have stated, the story of this anime is somewhat repetitive and bland, but I believe it to be a good thing, in this case. This anime falls into the "Slice of life" category and, as such, doesn't possess a plotline to follow. Reimeiroku introduces many aspects that are relevant to later installments of the series, but I feel that it does it in such a way that you don't need to have previous knowledge to understand them. The characters are seeing these things for the first time too, and you discover them as they do. Nothing is "taken for granted" like it could happen in later installments. Fascinating design and style subverted by a confused and broken plot. The ideas about war, surviving, being human are all present but overshadowed by shallow romances and love triangles. It has a classic 2000s look to the animation and character design which I like but overall I wouldn't recommend this anime over others. Unlike other military oriented mechas, this one's foundation for world building falls flat with lack of information, too little reality and lack of cohesiveness throughout the episodes. While most people are very familiar with the Disney version of The Little Mermaid - which was and still is a great movie in its own right - most people are probably not familiar with this short film by Toei back in 1975. The 69-minute film is very faithful to the original story by Hans Christian Anderson; a tragic tale of forbidden love and bad decision making. One thing I like about the movie is that it starts and finishes with live-action shots of Copenhagen, the home town of Anderson. The narrator gives a basic explanation to set up the movie, and after a scene of the ocean with the movie's title card... See full review

Even though this series is based off of a manga, realisitically Try Knights was created solely to capitalized on Japan hosting the 2019 Rugby World Cup. So in a way it felt like a 12-episode advertisement for the sporting event. The effort used in the making of Try Knights pretty much proves this. The main story focuses on a pair of rugby-playing brothers with different attitudes and career paths. The older brother has a superiority complex and views the younger brother as unfit to play the sport. The older brother prefers atleticism while the younger brother favors a more tactical approach to the sport... See full review

I'm going to keep this short. There are a lot of things in this Anime I enjoy, but there are a few things that almost kill this anime for me. The plot is good, but there are some important parts that make no sense and seem hastily put together. It's laziness that can be rooted out by reviewing the show a few times. Secondly, the action scenes have WAY too much ridiculous dialogue. Just shut up already. Don't monologue about random bullshit.  Other than the things I find highly annoying, the show keeps me interested in many ways. It's just how they choose to tie things together... They don't explain... See full review

This Korean movie is so out there that I really have nothing to compare it to, except to say is completely surrealist, it is just like a dream where you find yourself from one crazy situation to another one, without realizing the moment of transition, and you don't realize what you were doing until you wake up! It is not as crazy as movies like Trava or Hells Angels, but there is a lot of originality in the ideas for the... See full review

Although this movie is part of the Patlabor Series, it is only in name, as it barely has any relation to either the Patlabors or their characters, which only appear as a cameo and could have been replaced by any other robot or character, as their roles are non-essential for this story. This is more of a detective story in a sci-fi setting, but its executed very well, especially considering its time of release. It feels slow at times and if you watch a lot of sci-fi and detective stories, then the plot may... See full review

Oh boy, how do I even explain about this anime? Will be some SPOILERS so please be careful. Ok for starters... this whole thing is a huge mess. Story wise it goes from one plot to another... things just change randomly and there are just so many holes in this story. At first I was about sleep through it, until midway of the anime it got more interesting... then things just went downhill from there. Went from girl who lived in a modern world was a spy who stole the dragon ring falls into another world when being stabbed by her friend (Which also is a spy). She then is a concubine for the...
