Story
So, we have two guys: Hiroki and Kanata. They are very close friends, and perhaps something more. Let me first debunk the myth that this is a yaoi anime. It really irritates me that people see anything that could be a HINT of shounen-ai (male/male love, not sexually) and label it yaoi. OH MY GOD TWO GUYS TOGETHER STAB MY FACE OFF YAOOIIIIIII!!!! In reality, there isn't anything that even comes close to being yaoi, and barely anything that might hint at being shounen-ai in the first place. The subtleties in the OVA do make you think that there is a shounen-ai thing going on, though.

Story
Here we are again, with one of Gonzo's later works. Being the Gonzo fan I am I of course watched it, and here is what I have to say about it.

What we have here is a special OPs group with lots of funding, lots of will power and four 'hot' chicks (pun intended). This group consists of women, girls, ladies, chicks -- whatever you wish to call them. Their mission in life is to bust some ass. They work for a corporation called Barren whose goal in life I won't mention.

Ohh yes, I almost forgot to mention their chef. He's 18 years old and wants to become a patissier... See full review

Macross Zero

Story
Macross Zero is an undeniably huge undertaking; this clearly has one of the biggest budgets to ever be granted to an OVA. Bandai has fairly deep pockets, but I’m sure even they must have been a little antsy about the huge capital investment involved in such a project. Thus, my primary concern when I started up the first episode was that the OVA, in the interest of "playing it safe," would create a relatively ambitionless plot that strayed little from what other animes from the Macross series have already done. My worries were not... See full review

Texhnolyze

Story
Serial Experiments Lain, which Yoshitoshi Abe has also been involved in, shares a very similar story structure to Texhnolyze. Both start with a relatively unfulfilling storyline that explains nothing and expects the audience to infer much of what is going on. In the final half, the anime will leap off of the foundation that it has so painstakingly created and go in a totally unexpected direction, resulting in an ultimately satisfying experience. Unfortunately, this approach is inevitably what turns people off... See full review

Space Travelers

Story
Since there is virtually no plot in Space Travelers, I thought I'd write a haiku instead:

Space fights and action
Robots appear, oh shit! Run!
Shoot them in spaceships

Oh man, I kick ass at the haikus. (ha!!). Yes folks, that's about how much inspiration I got from Space Travelers. Let's just say the entire point of the movie was to be a campy sci-fi viewing, sort of like Star Wars, but way worse. It's unfortunate because in the beginning of the movie, we actually think it might not be half bad. Alien invaders came and conquered the Earth in three... See full review

Tristia of the Deep Blue Sea

Story
Tristia of the Deep Blue Sea is actually focused on a girl named Nanoca, who likes to invent golems and invent various things. The story we are told is that she has been sent to Tristia to help revive their economy, though we never really understand many aspects of the story. Who sent her? How was she supposed to help revive the economy? I suspect that fans of the manga or whatever this was based off of would understand these things, but unfortunately for the regular viewers, we don't. Anyways, rather than being a show about inventing or neat things like that, the entirety of the two episodes... See full review

Amon Saga

Story
You know, if there ever was a classic case of false advertising, it would be Amon Saga. From the first look at the cover of the DVD, I was excited and expected something interesting and unheard of. Now I know it's unheard of for a reason. Amon Saga is a dark sort of fantasy that is overall fairly generic, with lots of plot points and holes that aren't really explained. We only know that there is a giant turtle creature with a city on its back called Varlhiss, and this thing stomps around, killing random villagers and destroying cities. Its rule is a Darth Vader type guy (who reminded me... See full review

Story
I've read my fair share of reviews for Odin, all of which give it terrible scores. I'm talking Angelique or Wild Cardz terrible. All of these reviews had one thing in common -- they all had watched the dub, which has about 40 minutes of the 2 hour 15 minute Japanese version removed, supposedly significantly cutting down on the story. I, on the other hand, did watch Odin in its original form, so I can only imagine that either A) the subtitled original version is a hell of a lot better than the dub, or B) strange parasites invaded my brain (presumably from that sketchy Mexican food I hate... Run Melos!

Nov 26, 2004

Story
The score of 8.5 is solely based on one thing: this story was incredibly original! I've literally never seen anything remotely similar to this, and that deserves a high score in my book. First of all, the story takes place around the year 360 BC, which is fairly unusual in itself for an anime series. Combine that with the fact that it's based around the Greeks, and you have something truly unique. Now, admittedly, I've seen a few things that seem to take place around ancient times, such as Arislan or Arion, but nothing explicitly based on the Greeks. In general, the majority of the story... *Dies laughing*. Oh dear lord... where to begin. Psychic Wars is easily one of the worst things I've ever seen, and only Baoh rivals it. When I say bad, I don't mean terrible Angelique or Wild Cardz unwatchable bad, I mean hilarious YOU MUST SEE THIS bad, like something you'd see on MST3K, but way funnier.

The "plot" revolves around Ukyo, who somehow gets imbued with some sort of psychic power (that just gives him an outer or inner glow of sorts and lets him punch hard) that's to be used to destroy some demons in the past. Who gives him these powers? Five or six old women who are... See full review

Story
The story is the best part of the series. However, it is important to know that NTHT's plot develops slowly at first. So if you don't like lots of dialogue and want more action, this anime probably would not be a good watch. NTHT's strength lies in its ability to stir emotions through great plot and character development. The beginning episodes focus on laying out the story, characters, and setting. In the middle of the plot, expect a bit of dialogue because it is slowly building up momentum to the series great climax. The ending has its own twists and turns, and it will keep you... Story
Azumanga Daioh is a show about nothing, literally. Think of it like Seinfeld, but with high school girls and more hilarity, and you've got all the bases covered. The episodes revolve around six girls and their daily life at a high school, which always ends up being random in some way.

The comic formula is hilarious, and is almost flawless. Many scenes will make you scratch your head and wonder "eh?" while simultaneously laughing, while other scenes make you laugh by repeating the same thing over and over and over and over, far past the point where you think it should have just... Blood: The Last Vampire

Nov 20, 2004

Story
Let's be honest -- even though Blood the Last Vampire might be a great thing to watch, it isn't exactly swimming in plot. The little we know is that a young woman named Saya is one of the last original vampires, and works for the police department hunting down rogue demons and vampires alike. Her newest assignment places her at a local high school, where mysterious murders have been taking place. Unfortunately, that's about it. Throw in some additional vampires, a school nurse, and some neat chase scenes/fights, and you have the entirety of Blood.

Luckily, even though the plot... See full review

Tokyo Revelation

Story
Tokyo Revelation is something that I figured would be kind of like watching Mystery Science Theater 3000, no joke. I attribute this to the absolutely horrible presentation Manga gave the DVD. Really folks, it's almost laughable. The front cover and artwork looks like it was badly scanned and printed out (on a low dpi printer), and everything is all grainy. The artwork appears to make it seem like a ripoff of X TV, and the menu isn't much better. Anyways, needless to say, I didn't expect much except a barrel of laughs, but I was pleasantly proven wrong.

Story
When I first read the description for Saikano, I already developed preconceived notions about the series. Taking into account the DVD’s front cover and genres, I was expecting a series along the lines of a heart-warming romance or maybe even a heroine that kicked ass the whole series. Either of these ideas could have been great, but this isn’t what Saikano is about. Saikano is about war, its hardships, and the eternal power of love.

The plot was great when you look at how the characters were put together, but the setting of the story had a few loose ends and holes in it... See full review

Story
First of all, this will be a bundle review which will deal with the first OAV and both of the TV Seasons. They go together and doing a seperate review for each would just duplicate what was already written in another review and so on. The movie however demands a seperate review and that goes for the 5 specials, as well as the last one episode OAV - "No Mercy! ". So, TV S1 is a direct continuation of the first OAV. Actually, they've bundled it up so that the first four episodes in S1 are the first OAV. So you can either choose to get your hands on the "OAV" or simply just get the first TV... See full review

Story
When I decided to watch Moekan, I really had no idea what it was about, except that it was another H/Dating-sim game transition to anime. I skipped through one of the episodes quickly, and noticed that it contained (OH JOY) many maids, and I immediately was apprehensive. Once I watched the first episode, though, I had hopes that perhaps this would be more unusual than I thought. Well, I was right about that, but it didn't really end up being a good thing.

Natsuiro no Sunadokei

Story
As the synopsis suggests, Natsuiro is a clever mix of romance and sci fi, reminding me quite a bit of an episode of Quantum Leap. Please keep in mind that this isn't just another generic dating-sim transition OVA filled with nothing but romance, because it's not. The sci fi aspects definitely were the most interesting to me, with the romance being second (but also very effective for once).

True, there are some elements that will seem generic, such as the typical love triangle going on between childhood friend and unattainable beauty, but all in all I found the plot to be very... See full review

Story
Ghost Sweeper Mikami is quite a bit like Ghostbusters -- Japanese style. If you've seen Yougen Kaisha you'll recognize their similarities instantly, for good reason! However, where Yougen Kaisha succeeded, GSM seemed to fail in my book.

The overall plot is the same: group of bumbling buddies takes cares of spooks and spirits for a price, running into various hijinks along the way. Story
The story of this hour-long OVA is fairly simple to say the least. It was made for fans of the manga, and thus, you'll be fairly confused unless you get a primer. Luckily the version I watched came with just that, so I was able to get some back story before plowing into "I don't understandville". The basic premise is that Serge joins a boys academy, and is unknowingly placed with the school slut of sorts, Gilbert. Story
Adventures of Horus is a fairly generic tale of a young boy who must overcome various challenges to defeat a trademark evil being. The story has nothing to do with egyptian mythology, so if you were interested in this title because of the name Horus, turn back now!

The beginning of the movie reminded me a lot of the beginning of Future Boy Conan, with a boy witnessing his father dying, and being told to run off to find others of his kind. Hitsuji No Uta is a series that I've anticipated for awhile and it was great to be able to sit down and watch all four episodes in a row. The topic is drama, horror and vampires. Let’s face it folks, this movie wasn’t made to challenge your mind or open your horizons to anything. It wasn’t supposed to make you ooh and aah at the character development, or get involved in the storyline; it was made for the visuals, signed, sealed, and delivered. Period. To be honest, I was fairly disappointed with how completely lacking the plot was. In the beginning, you have a faint glimmer of hope that a plot exists... See full review

Princess Arete

Oct 3, 2004

Story
This beautiful tale was created by Studio 4C, the makers of Comedy, End of the World, and other titles. The important thing to note is that Princess Arete is not a story based heavily on plot, but rather, heavy (but subtle) character development, beautiful imagery, and most importantly: ideas and concepts about our roles in life, life itself, and sacrifices we each make. Arete is a princess who has been imprisoned in a tower her entire life, not able to learn or experience life as she wishes. Occasionally she sneaks out of the tower and goes to the village below, where she is able to blend as a... See full review

Marco

Story
The tale of a young man named Marco began when his mother left for Argentina from Italy . This is never really explained in the movie, but after reading other websites and reviews for the related "3,000 Leagues in Search of Mother", I came to understand that Italy went through a depression and its inhabitants often immigrated to other countries to support their families. That being said, Marco’s mother did this as well, leaving a very sad little boy behind. After he fails to receive a usual letter from her, he decides to set off on his own to find her, and that’s a very long distance... See full review

Story
Remember when you were a kid and went to a fast food restaurant, and saw the extremely tasty looking hamburger on the menu? The lettuce looked crisp, the tomatoes firm and juicy, the burger tastily prepared and done to just the right consistency, and sauce seeping from the fluffy golden bun. Then remember when you actually got the hamburger? The crisp lettuce was actually a limp piece of puke green muck, the burger dry looking and uninteresting, the bun smashed from the overzealous teenager who was having a bad day, etc. Now, back then, you probably didn’t understand the idea of false... Story
The setup for this show is ridiculously simple. A girl (whose name we never learn aside from it starting with "Ma") has her parents suddenly leave on a romantic cruise, leaving her alone in the house. To help her take care of the house, they have hired a maid--a tiny girl named Cheko. Come to think of it, she’s actually not very much a girl at all... More like a somewhat body-shaped mass with a girl’s head on it. This leads to 13 quick 3-minute episodes about the misadventures of Cheko, "Ma," and several of Cheko’s weird friends that are introduced over the course of the show. The humor... See full review

Special Duty Combat Unit Shinesman

Story
Our world is threatened by evil aliens with nefarious plans, and the only thing that stands in their way is the Combat Unit Shinesman—a group of five mild-manned businesspeople who don colorful metal suits and fight monsters sent out by the aliens (who are, by the way, also have day jobs disguised as human businessmen). Don’t worry, you’re not supposed to take this seriously. Shinesman is a two episode anime OVA parody of the ‘sentai’ genre best known in the Western world for the American show ‘Power Rangers’—a rather silly combination of teen ‘Saved by... Story
Wow. The word flowed through my mind at a snail's pace as I absorbed what I had just seen, as the ending credits to Hinotori scrolled down the screen. Have you ever watched an anime that’s hard to pay attention to? When it’s really hard to force yourself to finish it at all, let alone quickly? You know the type: a genre you dislike, a boring storyline, or anything in between – you don’t like it, and you don’t want to have to finish the series. On the other hand, occasionally you find a gem which, for some reason, sucks you in and demands your attention. You can’t wait to watch... See full review

Marriage

Story
Remember after school specials? Yeah, you know the ones... where Becky huffed gasoline and had to go to the hospital, or James smoked pot and ended up behind bars. The message? Don’t do drugs! These public service announcements full of government propaganda were on TV all the time, feeding the minds of youngsters. And now, folks, I am proud to announce a public service announcement from the Japanese government: GET MARRIED, NOW! Missed it on TV? That’s ok, you can always go rent "Marriage", a 2 part OVA, to hear this message loud and clear from the comfort of your own home! But wait... See full review

FLCL

Story
First and foremost, I want to say how difficult this review is to write, because I didn’t like FLCL that much at all. But, I can still see it for what it is: a great piece of work, so I have to adjust my scores accordingly and not simply rate low based on my own preference. That being said, I am going to write myself off as one of the many people who "didn’t get it" (re: the story) after seeing this one time through. FLCL is NOT something to watch if you want a cut and dry story, or even a confusing story that eventually makes sense. I like confusing stories, I really do. Take Paranoia... See full review

Suddenly Princess

Story
When I first picked this up, I was very concerned that it would be shoujo. Because hey, I really don’t like shoujo, and with a name like Suddenly Princess, does anything else come to mind? Thankfully, I was very wrong.

Suddenly Princess isn’t a show filled with plot, period. There are no twists, dark secrets, and there isn’t a substantial amount of character development (or any, for that matter). The OVA is of the random comedy type, and succeeds at it well. The entire premise is a bit unusual, and you get the idea that it is fairly random from the get-go. Lapis is a pretty... Sukeban Deka

Story
Sukeban Deka is a very dark look at a variety of things: friendships gone bad, crime families, a bit of supernatural powers, and a bad girl who is really a good person at heart, who has fallen through the cracks of the system. I’m not sure why the story appealed to me so much, because the story isn’t necessarily completely unique. I’ve seen series that deal with crime families, but never dealing with high schoolers in a situation involving deaths of children and students. I’ve seen series that deal with people getting out of jail to become temporary cops (to earn their release), but... See full review

Vampire Wars

Story
I'll admit, when I turned on Vampire Wars I expected something really stupid. It surely would have something to do with vampires fighting humans or something contrived and generic, and would be an utter waste of time. I was pleasantly surprised when I discovered I was wrong! In fact, Vampire Wars ends up having a very interesting plot, namely about where the vampires came from, why they are on Earth, why they suck people's blood, etc. Obviously I won't give it away in a review, but let's just say it was very unique and original, to say the least. Prior to finding out those tidbits, it does... See full review
