One Outs

Oct 12, 2009

A fun sports anime in the play-to-win vein of Akagi and Kaiji - these guys want to win so much it hurts. Hagiwara Masato, the seiyuu who voiced both Kaiji and Akagi, turns in yet another great performance as One Out's protagonist Kokuchi, which also solidifies the link between the other two series. However, while One Outs is incredibly clever at times, the experience feels shallow compared to what was done in the series One Outs seems to be imitating. Kaiji and Akagi both had darker undertones that don't have nearly as much bite in One Outs. Also, the series becomes very formulaic near the end... See full review

Toradora!

Despite a super conventional plot and an ending that goes on at least one episode too long, this is a great show. Like many of my favorite series, Toradora successfully transitions from comedy to drama; after a few episodes I was hooked and the trap only tightened as the series began to lose the jokes for good old fashioned love polygon angst. You'd have to be braindead to see the first episode and not know exactly how the series will end, but most people will be surprised at the surprisingly well developed cast that accompanies the predictable plot. The characters manage to be more than... See full review

Cowboy Bebop: The Movie

Cowboy Bebop the MovieIt took me quite a long time to get to this movie. I guess I was afraid it would not live up to my expectations. Fortunately it did! Keep in mind that I am writing this review after watching the series, I am not sure how I would rate it as a standalone movie.I have to start with visuals as I was really surprised how well the movie aged. There is a classic feel to it, something a lot of modern HD flicks are lacking. It is the same thing I love about older live action movies. Cameras they use these days are so good, that the image looks unreal, no distortion at all. It might be just... See full review

First shout-out after finishing this: "WHHHH... FFFFFF, what exactly did I just watch?" As Otaku108 neatly described on IRC:[Otaku108] sometimes there aren't words in the dictionary to describe some things [Otaku108] usually I just cover them with "ZOMGBBQ"Yes, ZOMGBBQ is probably the best way to describe this beautiful monstrosity. Kemonozume is one big experiment in both animation as in storyline. The story starts out being quite solid, changing into a suspenseful romance with plot twists aplenty quickly after the intro. However, Kemonozume is like a good mindfuck anime... See full review

Story/Plot:This was surprisingly siimple and straight forward. There wasn't a lot of beating around the bush for the most part. It was cute, I laughed, I teared up, I got annoyed, there was a lot to this show and it was completely unexpected. The flow of the show as good, but it kind of dragged on in a few spots, still nothing major and I barely noticed it.Animation:There wasn't anything particularly wrong with the animation, but it wasn't particularly stunning or exceptional. I don't give points for pink/blue hair... then again, these are minor issues, for the most part the animation was fluid and pleasing... See full review

Yakitate!! Japan follows the trials of Azuma Kazuma, a young boy who dreams of making a uniquely Japanese bread and putting his country on the baking world's map. Along the way he lands a job in one of Japan's foremost bakeries and has to endure all manner of, somewhat unique, baking tournaments. While not the brightest spark, Azuma does have a natural talent for breadmaking that puts him a cut above his many rivals, and with the help of a slightly crazed selection of colleagues and friends he continues to reach for his dream of creating Ja-Pan.If you've come to this series in search of a serious... This is one adorable tale of a little girl who tries hard no matter what is happening. Her dad is basically a mobster. Her mother a very uptight but tender lady yet this family does not live together because of inner difficulties. Suprise Suprise. There's an interesting use of cats and dogs in this anime that is sure to make you giggle whenever you see them on screen. There's actually nothing really special about this movie at all. The art, and music are all average. The characters is where it shines. They are nothing but amazing. Right down to the random side characters. This anime will tug at your heart... See full review

Spice and Wolf II This is what a sequel should be like. Embracing all that is good about the show and advancing the best parts. Spice and Wolf is back with all the witty lines you can take! I am always happy when I find an anime with medieval setting that doesn't indulge itself in too many "magical things". Moreover exploring the life of a merchant might is as much fun as that of a knight. There are a few clever plots which keep you attention, but the center part of the show is still the relationship between Horo and Lawrence. And it is written really well, a bit deeper than in the first... See full review

Get Backers

Getbackers is an anime that gets mentioned a lot in the context of many new series, as in "an hypnotic eye? hey, they had that in Getbackers, you know!" or in "using perfumes in a fight? hey, Getbackers did it already!". Since I'm known to my friends as a guy who can find a dozen of things borrowed from Dragon Ball in just about any anime, I was genuinely intrigued. After having read a recommendation that said Getbackers are similar to sCRYed, I was hesitant again since I found the latter a tad too boring, but I gave it a shot anyway. I... See full review

Everything about this show is so average and so predictable. The characters are so silly and you just can't help but to laugh or facepalm at what happens on screen. The plot while a great idea but it isn't explored much and it's more just about ecchi and love triangles that don't even go anywhere. The animation and music aren't bad or good they are just average. If you are looking for just a fun old school romp in the funny/ecchi catagory this is a great short watch and you won't loose any... many ;) braincells!

I was somewhat annoyed in the first few episodes, the way the characters acted felt very forced (probably my culture-shock from regular to shoujo anime >_>). That feeling went away after a couple of episodes and I actually started caring for the characters. The story is about a private school for girls, who have their own version of the Senpai / Kohai system, the "soeur" (French for sister) system, a much closer system in which the younger "sister" helps the older one out with minor tasks, and the older one takes the younger in her care. This anime really grew to me a few weeks after I finished it. Don't get me wrong, I loved it while watching this series, but this is one of those rare cases that got better over time. It's best described as a Drama / Action / Supernatural anime. It starts with great action (the first episode was what I hoped Canaan would be, awesome fast-paced action) and works hard on the character-development once you're a few episodes in. But really, with an OP like this, I was already sold at the very beginning: Check out the full... See full review

All visuals, no plot, thats it. The animation was gorgeous, but it was all there was to it. 8 minutes of shooting in the dark of night in a plotless fight between robots and tanks, with pretty much the only conversation being the shouting of teamnames when said teammember is in a pinch. Even though 8 minutes of shooting-action might sound exciting to some, it was not. They somehow managed to take away even the thrill of the battle. Watch this for the visuals only, if you must watch it.

Comedy

Definitely my favorite of Studio 4Cs "Sweat Punch" project (Professor Dan Petory's Blues, End of the World, Comedy, Higan and Junk Town), and one of my all-time favorite short-movies in general. Comedy is a story about a swordsman who fights for whatever people ask him to, but only in exchange of books. A little girl in dire need of this swordsman in order to protect her village looks for a book to pay him, and asks the swordsman for aid. The visuals of this short-movie are... unique. It's mainly black and white, and while it doesn't look anything like the modern "high-end" animation... See full review

End of the World

Oct 9, 2009

I really enjoyed this short-movie by Studio 4C, one of my favorite studio's if it comes to interesting artstyles and stories. The visuals are quite bad, but atleast they're all drawn, and it actually adds to the whole experience (in contrary to the horrible CG from Professor Dan Petory's Blues, from the same compilation-project). I liked the fact that while it was largely a big heap of randomness, it still had some plot going on. The viewer gets thrown from a "relatively normal" world into a completely bizarre one, but not without any explaination whatsoever. For as good as short-movies can get... See full review

The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya (2009)

Comparing two seasons of Haruhi it’s obvious that the 2nd is an absolute collapse. It’s really sad. Animation and music are still great, but the story.. I guess I’m not the only one who was disappointed – we were waiting for something better. Much better.Lots of identical episodes (more than a half of the season), and almost all the other episodes have the same story line. I accentuate only one single episode – the first one. It was pretty fun.I do really think that ‘Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya (2009)’ failed and It’s a great shame for Kyoto Animation. Such... See full review

“All right, let’s do this!” “Sure. Let’s go.” “Unga!” “Would you cut it out and start already?” PLOT:   Lucky Star, for me, is at the same lines as The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya, or maybe even better. Being produced by the same company, one can easily find the similarities. Looking at the plot, Lucky star has no plot. It is a mixture of random, unorganized episodes. There is no story, yet, the entertainment is strong. The genres are highly valued and are, perhaps, the best point in Lucky star. Kyoto animation has once... See full review

I gave Pale Cocoon a try because it was recommended to me and it was short enough where it would be no big loss if it wasn't great. Oh how wrong I was, Between the animation, story, and subtle sounds it was a great way to pass the time.  The animation drew me in and the story made me stay. A complex story that trys to convey so much in the short time that it has, And much of what it tries to accomplish it does splendidly. Only on minor parts did it seem to fall short for me. The ending while intriguing and illuminating seemed to be a bit lacking. Without going into detail It seemed like they... See full review

When I read the synopsis, this was one of those series that seemed kind of sweet, so I thought that I'd give it a go; and oh how glad I am that I did! This tale of unobtainable love set in Victorian England had me gripped from the very beginning and I marathoned the entire twelve episodes in one day; I just couldn't get enough. Despite its relatively slow pacing, you still manage to get a real sense of the progression of the central protagonist’s love and, as such, you really begin to care about them and their plight. The spectacular animation and amusing characters mitigate the sometimes sluggish pacing, the mahjong sits center-stage at nearly all times in the show, and Rie Kugimiya is voice acting. Intro...What would happen if you were told that you had only 1 minute of animation time to do whatever you wanted?  This is what happened when they asked 15 people to do just that...Story: 8Because Ani Kuri is somewhat different from your standard format, the idea of story cannot be compared to that of a normal anime.  Instead, you have to look at the individual 'episodes' of 1 minute long.  How much story can you show in a 1 minute clip?  The answer depends on the animator and some of these clips show incredible depth while others are just painful to sit through.  However, since... Summer means blockbusters at the box office, with dumbed-down and juiced-up movies providing wonderful escapist entertainment for all who indulge. Adhering to this tried-and-true cinematic formula of tart-it-out, blow-it-up, and gun-it-down, PA Works' 2009 anime, Canaan, offers the kind of cheap thrills and impressive visuals that go particularly well with popcorn. I went into this expecting mediocer stuff. but i got an amazing story about robots and how humans react to the situation the future has brought them. These robots are called Boomers and they look, feel, and do everything like a human can do. Suprisingly being from the earlt 2000's it has a lot of sex in it. A lot of the Boomers they had hanging around were sex "slaves" or whatever. Anyway the story is rather cliche being humans don't overly like the Boomers and murders start occuring. Toki wo Kakeru Shoujo is very impressive. I’d say that the story is exclusive – If this word fits the situation. The greatest plus of the movie is that love is not the main theme, but the most important. Animation is pretty interesting, a kind of better than usual. Sound scared me sometimes, but It also is perfect for those moments where It was used. And everything’s perfectly combined; I watched the whole movie with my month wide open. The Animatrix

OH SNAP!  It's the Matrix!  It must be awesome!Do you remember those days before the second movie came out?  I sure do.  Ah well.So for me the Animatrix fit in perfectly where the movies left off.  It's more or less crap that's hardly worth watching but if you stick around long enough there's a few enjoyable bits here and there.Positives: So really, the animation styles are all kind of neat, and if you're really just into the whole art of anime maybe there's something here you'll enjoy. There was one story of all the episodes I liked but I don't remember it enough to tell you what it... Ergo Proxy

Ergo Proxy.  Ahhhh...The show everyone seems to love to hate.  So here's your contrasting opinion.  I really liked it, and if you dare please continue reading on and find out why!Positives: So Ergo Proxy for all its faults oozes ambiance and style.  When I first found out about it I was on a Ghost in the Shell/Cyberpunk kick and was eating anything of that sort up without much thought and with Ergo Proxy I got exactly what I was expecting.  The art and overall style are just fun to watch.  I really enjoyed the whole cold, dark, and dreary air to the show and in my opinion... Air Gear

Oh Nellie!  I have to admit I'm a bit ashamed to have watched Air Gear, but to my surprise (and likely an increase in my shame) I actually kind of enjoyed it.  So without further ado let's break it down:Positives: So I don't know what drew me to Air Gear, but once I'd started I found something very interesting about it.  I wanted to watch the next episode.  There is something in the show that compels you to want to see what happens next.  I'm not sure if it's the whole concept of flying around doing rediculous moves on souped up roller blades or if it's the fact tha nearly every... The Familiar of Zero

Zero no Tsukaima.  A riddle wrapped in a mystery inside an enigma.  Two cookies to anyone who knows who actually said that! Anyhow, that's kind of not at all what I think about this anime though in some way it sort of relates to my overall thoughts on this show.Positives: Once you get past the fluff there's actually a story, and while it's not overly deep it's actually pretty fun.  Several times while watching I found myself wishing that this had been done not as a show for young folk, but perhaps as something a bit more mature.  Inmy mind the concept is really interesting and worth... Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann

Disclaimer: Ah, the first modern anime I watched, and the reason I decided to give up decades of prejudice against something I really had no reason to hate.  If you haven't read the prologue to my anime life then you might want to pop over and do that first, but in reality, it doesn't much matter.  Anyhow... Tengen Toppa Gurren-Lagann will likely always hold an unique and yet confused place in my heart when it comes to anime.  It's a show that falls into a genre I normally am not very interested, and yet there was something in it that appealed to me in a strong way. As most of you... See full review

Rurouni Kenshin: Tsuiokuhen

Interestingly when I first came across this anime I was really confused.  There were all sorts of fan rankings saying great things about the Rurouni guy and also this show called Samurai X and there were all these titles and alternate titles and then some other anime that was related but not the OVA thing (which I had no idea what that was originally) and so on and so forth. For the uninitiated it was a huge, confusing mess of information and if it wasn't for good old wikipedia I'm sure I'd never have figured it all out. Ahem... So this was one of the first animes I watched and it was... See full review

Berserk

Ah Berserk.  What a weird show.  I remember choosing this because I grew up a huge medieval nut (Yes, I still am one) and I wanted to find something along those lines which would fill that interest which had been dormant for too long of late.  Somehow I came across Berserk.  Now this was still during those first days of my anime career where I was hesitant to just try things out because I wasn't really sure how to find anime that I'd like and there was still that part of me that wondered if I'd just gotten lucky in finding the first one or two shows that I had... Cowboy Bebop: The Movie

Note: Since the movie is really part of the series I watched it spliced in where it belonged - however, I have a review for both which is this same review so don't bother reading both unless you really enjoyed my review the first time. =) I really enjoyed Cowboy Bebop.  It's one of those shows that actually become better to me once I'd finished it.  What I mean by that statement is simply that once the story had come to completion and the characters then had been fully fleshed out I could think back on the older episodes and appreciate them in a very different way than I could at... Code Geass: Lelouch of the Rebellion

I'm not going to spend too long on this one since most everyone has seen it and you already probably know what to expect.  Yes it's a really fun ride but to avoid wandering down familiar alleys I'm just going to pick out a few things I liked and a few things I didn't like. Likes: Fun characters, fun story, lots of crazy plot twists, spectacular anime quality, fun setting, fun characters. Dislikes: Lots of battles (way better than most battle heavy anime though).  That's mostly it.  I just really enjoyed this one for what it was.  Sure it's nothing ground breaking story wise...
