Chi's New Address

Chi's New Address is what I would turn too if I was feeling sad. You can not watch this anime and not get a smile on your face. It's incredibly adorable. Chi, who is the young and curious kitten protagonist, sounds and looks so cute. As a big cat-lover I couldn't pass this show up. Story: Each episode is less than 5 minutes, which fits the light hearted and simpleness of the show. It's a slow but fun show about the mischief a small kitten can get into. And that's it. They don't try to over complicate things or have a complex plot. It's just pure, adorable entertainment for five minutes. Cat... See full review

Clannad After Story

Intro...Following on from where we left off from Clannad, Clannad After Story explores the life of the characters once they've left school.Story: 10The original Clannad had characters which were likable and a plot which made the watching brilliant.  When I first heard about Clannad After Story, I was somewhat apprehensive, after all, more often than not the sequal to a series is never as good as the original.  What I was not prepared for was that not only did the story deliver the high standard from the original series, it actually took the step and went one better.  It seems that the small... Tokyo Godfathers Touching story about three homeless people, what could go wrong? Fortunately nothing does! ^^ Tokyo Godfathers' main characters are a treat to watch. Each with a unique personality and problems, "picturesque" yet completely believable. The story is built around an abandoned child, whose family is our motley band in a search of. Gradually we are given insight into their lives. Well written and enjoyable. The only problem I had with the story is the grand chase near the end. I don't think it fitted the pace of this anime, but it was not overdone that much. Visuals... See full review

Cat Soup

Cat Soup Brilliant. Cat Soup is randomness at its best. It is strange, amusing, provoking and well paced (yea, sorry FLCL). The story? Well...two cats...on a journey...and death...why do you care? It is definitely not something to be watched for story or character development. Cat Soup is a hypnotic ride through a dark world with fantastic visuals and matching music. You are not into drugs, but want to see a fish skeleton swimming through the ocean? You hate time for being so precise and want to see it dance back and forth like a folklore troupe? Eat a cat soup!...or you can just watch it... See full review

She and Her Cat

She and Her Cat The OVA that started Makoto Shinkai's accession to the throne of melancholy and visual perfection. While being the first one, it is on par with his later works. How much emotion can you pack in a 5 minutes long story told from a perspective of a cat? More than to a typical blockbuster movie. It is quite surprising how little is sometimes more than enough. Slight symbolism and emphasis on mood are trademarks of this masterpiece. In fact it is more like listening to a classical piece of music than watching a movie. Yea, something like Merry Christmas Mr. Lawrence by Sakamoto... See full review

Kite

Kite After enjoying Mnemosyne I finally dug out this classic from the bottom of my wtw list. Unfortunately the conclusion I have reached is that explicit content doesn't always work well with the story. It has a lot of explicit content, be it violence or sex, and a story that would hardly fill one page of a book. While trying hard to make you pity the main character, it achieves nothing but indifference. The whole concept just doesn't work the way it should. I was unable to connect with Sawa and thus left out of the story. She was not believable enough for me, why would she endure those things... See full review

Kiki's Delivery Service

Kiki's Delivery Service Another charming story by Hayao Miyazaki and a great mood lifter for when you don't want to bother with villains. The story is simple and straightforward, but engaging enough to keep your attention. This optimistic flight on a broomstick offers a great view, showing us the "good" side of humanity. I really enjoyed its "no bad guys" attitude, similar to My Neighbor Totoro. Miyazaki shows us again that simplicity might be a good thing and that "evil" does not necessarily make a good movie. The mood of Kiki's Delivery Service is reflected by its... See full review

Wonderful Days

Wonderful Days I have definitely seen better sci-fi, but it is still enjoyable, even if only for the looks. The story is your typical good versus bad uprising spiced with a bit of love here and there. It is nothing original and not even the best execution of such plot. It would really benefit from more "gray" in its strictly defined black & white characters (and no, one is not enough). But this may be just my longing for the worlds like Witcher by Sapkowski, which is the very best example of moral grayness. If there is anything Wonderful Days has to offer, it is the graphical aspect. I... See full review

Barefoot Gen It is sad and I mean "Grave of the fireflies"-like sad and beautiful at the same time. There is nothing more you might want from an anti-war movie, sweet child caught amids the terrors of human stupidity. Barefoot Gen takes us on a tour through devastated Hiroshima, making a clear point of Japan unnecessarily prolonging the war and USA being to much eager to show off their power. I know we are unable to question decisions made in a time we did not live in, but still it is good to know what should not be repeated. And such things are best shown through the eyes of a child... FLCL I started watching FLCL knowing of all the hype surrounding it and after seeing it, I know why it has such a strong fan base. Unfortunately it just didn't work for me. FLCL is highly abstract anime. I personally love shows, which make you think. The problem with such level of symbolism as FLCL has starts when you are unable to grasp what it tries to say. I have to admit, that I have probably missed 50% of the points FLCL tried to make and regarded them just as a visual try at originality. In fact FLCL's visuals are really original. It ranges from simplicity to diversity and animation is... See full review

La Maison en Petits Cubes I didn't see this coming. Even though it won an Academy Award, I have been living in an utter darkness until vivafruit switched the lights on with his review. First thing you will notice is the distinctive style. La Maison en Petits Cubes is an art piece and I mean it. I would spend a whole day in a gallery featuring scenes from it. It is not using that cheap way of some recent shows who regard beauty only as smooth hd lines. I tip my hat to all the artists who breathed a life into this beautiful work. Queen's Blade: Rurou no Senshi I though I would be able to force myself to finish it and just rate it 0.5 star, but at the end I couldn't do that. In fact it is the worst thing I have ever seen (mind you I have seen just about 70 anime series and movies, still it is pretty bad). I don't even now why I picked it up, my brain must have been shut down at that moment. It is tedious, looks bad and sounds even worse. And the story, I mean that utterly pointless randomness, should receive some award, because it must have been really hard to think of something as stupid. And don't think that I am... Black Lagoon: The Second Barrage After seeing Black Lagoon I was pretty much sure what to expect of this and it delivered all the crazy gunfights and recklessness I could ask for. And it did so with a bit more finesse than the first part. Those looking for a depth and intelligence are surely to be disappointed, but when you just regard Black Lagoon as a mindless fun ride, it works. It has its highs and lows, but all in all it is pretty consistent. If you enjoy the first ep, go on. Otherwise don't even bother. Trigun I had the same feeling of being in a presence of a classic as when i watched Cowboy Bebop, although story-wise Trigun is not as deep as Cowboy Bebop. It does have a lot of style and a great character design, but the best thing about Trigun is its sense of humor. Well written lines with a perfect delivery (I tip my hat to voice actors) and clever fighting scenes are forwarding the story in the first three quarters of this show. Unfortunately the last part is using much more "heavier" stuff for this purpose and abandoning the comedy part, which I think was not a wise decision, but... See full review

Millennium Actress

Millennium Actress This is a great example of weaving a story from many threads and making the final product an extraordinary experience. Through her films, we are told a story of an actress always chasing her love and finding out that it is the actual chase she loves, not the man. It is not an amazing realization, but it holds a lot of truth. Some people are just blind to this, but anticipation is usually better than the moment we anticipate. Animation and visuals were good enough to keep your attention, but I was a bit disappointed with the music. There just weren't any memorable moments in the... See full review

Mnemosyne I picked this up because of VivisQueen's review and I was pleasantly surprised. First thing that caught my attention was the awesome OP song by Galneryus (ED too), Yama-b's vocals are just epic. Other songs of theirs are worth checking out too. Apart from the 6th ep the plot was interesting enough and I especially liked that apparent flow of time between episodes. It might have been developed further, answering some questions about the past and having better motivation for the cast, but it has definitely done a good job. If you like mystery plots, you should at least try... See full review

GANTZ

GantzThis really should have worked. It had the perfect setting for a gore/violence anime. Unfortunately not every labyrinth has a way out and Gantz got lost. The story, although being just below average, did a decent job of creating a background for the action. It had some good points, where I got kinda attached to some of the cast, but not to the extent of what Elfen Lied did. Unfortunately the action that should have followed the story went missing. Fighting sequences in Gantz are like watching a turn-based strategy. Or two amateurs playing a chess game, both taking their time just because they... See full review

Kurozuka After watching the first ep I thought this anime could have some decent fighting scenes. I didn't know just how wrong I was. Fights quickly went down to average / below average. As the action scenes are the only thing this type of anime can build on, I was really surprised that there were more meaningless story fillers than actual fights. And as for the story, ehm..., it really didn't work out well. It was bland all the way through to the ending, which didn't end anything. I just can't see the audience this show was aimed at. This would have fallen flat if it weren't for the characterisation of the central characters. A pretty basic plot rescuing a damsal in distress with a small twist and the fighting wasn't hugely compelling or particularly interesting in their animation. Only a few of the relationships interested me but some of the characters geuinely seemed to develop and impact on each other more than in a lot of series I have seen. I hated the opening and ending themes passionately and didn't notice the soundtrack at all. Murasaki Kuhoin was a great character despite seeming a bit older than 7 to me... See full review

Louise is a student at a Harry Potter-like school for magic on a distant world. She is known as "Louise the Zero" because of her consistent failures in the magical arts. This was an excellent mecha anime done entirely in 3D CGI. It had all the trappings of the classic mecha genre: action, romance, politics, and intrigue, but the visuals made it a truly unique experience. The story revolves around Kazuto, a young mecha pilot with "AI" ability, which is sort of a sixth sense. He finds himself involved in a war between rival corporations for control of space. While I wouldn't want anime in general to move towards 3D CGI, this series was quite a refreshing detour from the usual.

The latest incarnation of the classic Robotech series, celebrating the 25th anniversary of the Macross franchise. I like the way they preserved the textures from the original, while vastly updating the action sequences with incredible computer enhancements. Many story elements in this series were very similar to the original, from Alto's rescue of Ranka (reminiscent of Rick's rescue of Minmei) to the beauty pageant to the wide use of song playing a pivotal role in battles. Sky Girls TV

Sky Girls was a very light-hearted, feel-good anime that left a smile on my face at the end of nearly every episode. The interactions between the three main characters and their antics made this series a lot of fun to watch. Otoha was the quirky tomboy. Karen was the introvert brainiac. Eika was the serious disciplinarian. And later on, they're joined by Elise, the sharp-tongued tsundere. The story that went along with the character dynamics was also very well-done: it was a scifi, post-apocalyptic, alien-invasion sort of tale with some interesting twists.

This is a cute anime. Very cute. Teeth-rotting, sugary cute. Utena and Berserk are easily two of the best anime series of the 90s. They both have a fairly simple premise in being a journey of self discovery however it is their execution that sets them apart from the rest. Utena uses sumptuous symbolism and characterisation to captivate you, Berserk uses raw passion and clever storytelling. I have immense respect for both these titles for they manage to create a world of their own where you cannot help but surrender yourself in awe. I was very glad to have access to this title recently as it was credited by the director (Ikuhara) of my favourite anime, Revolutionary Girl Utena as the movie that got him interested in working in animation. More recently another title (Gankutsuou) credited its visual style to that of Belladonna. Which just goes to show how impressive it is that the textures and patterns from a surreal anime such as Gankutsuou, was actually first utilised in 1973! Influences alone, let's discuss the visuals of this title. For a 1973 title, it boasts amazing qualities. As mentioned - the textures... See full review

Here's an anime that was very successful in Japan but whose success could not be repeated upon its release in North America. Is it because of the quality of the anime itself? It's not the case here at all as what we have is a solid anime with some charming attributes. I think its lack of success in America resides in the fact that when it was brought over, a certain show named Sailor Moon was still immensely popular and regarded as THE only magical girl people were taking notice to. As such this and some other shows (including Wedding Peach) were not nearly as popular as they might have been. ... See full review

Overall Gantz is a good series that had potential to be great. The concept behind it is very interesting and it raises good questions about the human condition such as what a man alone can do against the concensus or how to handle your sexuality when it differs from the norm (even if at times in this show, the weird fetishes are portrayed as "normal"). Gantz falls short of being a better series as it loses some of its intensity and creativity towards the early middle. This anime keeps getting compared with Gantz everytime I mention it to someone. As I have seen both I must sadly admit that this comparison is applicable. Like Gantz, this series has an excellent premise that gets wasted on excess gore, character cliches and a tediously dragged out plot. To its defense though, Elfen Lied has something that Gantz does not, and that is a heart. You can see through situations in the series that the creators are trying to make a point of the loners and outcasts of society. Cinderella Boy owes a lot of its style, character depictions and choppy animation to late 80s- early 90s titles such as City Hunter, Lupin and Ranma 1/2 (whose name is referenced in this series as the lead character also turns into a girl). Cinderella Boy is a great little title to catch when you are just looking for a fun casual show, where you do not need to get too involved in the story or character. Characters that always deserved more screen time on Sailor Moon are the cats. Their interaction with the soldiers was always entertaining but that was also at the expense of giving them a "backbone" so to speak. This movie allows us to see a side of Luna that makes her a little more coherent as a character and also provides an entertaining way to spend a Sunday afternoon. Wedding Peach is a very interesting title if one takes the time to see it through. The first episodes are probably the worst of the show so if you are willing to bear with it, this is a very rewarding experience. At the start I felt the similarities with Sailor Moon were going to hurt its chances to be an original and concise series. How wrong I was! Sure the first few episodes are very very similar to Sailor Moon but as I saw them through I could see that the plot was going somewhere a little different. Somehow detaching itself from the "Sailor Moon-ness". This is of course to Sailor... See full review

How do you make a predictable anime enjoyable and inspired? Chance Pop Session's answer is to have highly interesting sub-plots that somehow sharpens the main story, incredibly well cast seiyuus and relatable characters. It seems with such a great combo, everything just comes together. What also makes it so good is that it never drags on with the story or any of the situations so much that it puts you off. Instead, those stories are so well put together that you really feel the impact of the anime as a whole. The animation for this title is good but has a couple of kinks. I'll start with the... What I liked the most about the show is the characters. In most harem animes, I would rate characters very low, but this show is different. A few times I would start watching the show, and forget to set the language to Japanese. I'm then horrified by some of the worse dubs I've ever heard. Okay, they aren't the worst dubs. I hate them just as much as 90% of the dubs I've come across. That's okay though because the Japanese voice actors do a great job. There is a story here, but it just feels added in. This is probably on purpose. The show is more about the interactions with the characters. It is more of a... See full review

Aria the Animation

Truth be told, I probably wouldn't have touched this series if it didn't have a scifi component to it. I knew it was considered "slice of life," which I had always thought translated into "boring...avoid at all costs." Luckily, it did have a scifi component to it...Aria the Animation is a stunning series: tranquil, slow-paced, and breathtaking, with picturesque vistas, a mellow acoustic soundtrack, and beautiful characters. Watching Akari, Aika, and Alice explore and grow in the utopian city of Neo-Venezia, as they strive towards their goal of becoming full-fledged undines, is a... See full review

Very weird premise (scifi girls from a parallel universe charge up depressed people in this universe using giant electrical plugs), but VERY funny and heavily ecchi. Great story overall.

I picked this one up for the kawaii factor, and it didn't disappoint in that respect. There was a nice mix of characters, and it had a lot of really funny parts, much of it over-the-top, some of it mildly ecchi. Mika was the best character, even though she didn't get a lot of screen time.

Phantom: Requiem for the Phantom

Just like its name, Phantom ~Requiem for the Phantom~ is a convoluted mess. It’s only by a great feat of skill, or luck, that it avoids being a complete disaster. The story is quite simply, all over the place. Jumping from mediocre action scenes to the tedium of daily life under the main characters (being enslaved to a criminal syndicate doesn’t really lead to much excitement outside the workplace) to the inner workings and politics behind Inferno. Individually these elements would have a hard time cracking mediocre. Unsurprisingly, when thrown together they’re not any better. To... See full review

Story: 5/10 DearS can really confuse you. I know this because  I've watched it. The ending was a cliff hanger, meaning no real satisfaction from watching it. This show has romance and pet like aliens. It will be wierd to watch, but when you start you can't stop watching it tell your done with the last episode. There really isn't much of a plot to begin with and nothing is really memorable. This anime is a sorry excuse for an anime. Animation: 8/10 When i watched this anime I saw how amazing...
