coming from one who's only experience in gorey anime is tokyo ghoul, the only thing i have to compare this with is every other show i've watched. so, take that into account ― i'm unfamiliar in this genre so i'm not sure what the norms/expectations are to be from the viewer.

it was a decent show; i ranked it three stars for just that reason. it was mediocre, i suppose. the show was honestly more fanservice than i expected it to be, and i'm sure seras's presence truly serves for such a purpose. the explicit sex tag was not what i pictured it to be either, but the fault there is entirely my own. i figured worse case it might be something short that i could skip over. if it applies to you, learn from my mistakes: the tag is in reference to a brief - but with livid detail - necrophilic rape (in episode 7).  it is a lot of gore though, i thought that it couldn't get worse than tokyo ghoul and i was rendered quite speechless. reading some of the other reviews, i can gladly say that i was not surprised about character groupings within the show.

no, i have not seen any other work of the hellsing varieties before committing myself to this one, in fact the only reason i chose to watch it was because of a parody. i've watched hellsing ultimate abridged (made by team four star, available to all via youtube) more times than a i can count ― so much so that i can now recite the script if you asked it of me. the reason behind me watching the original was only to compare the two. if you're curious, there is little difference between the two plot wise. the abridged version is the original, but with far less gore and fanservice (youtube restrictions, probably) and more comedic relief. 

despite enjoying it, i ranked it low because it fell victim to the same foe that most short animes do. while the episodes are far longer than the average 25 minutes, there was still too short of a time to be able to develop a plot and characters to its full potential. had it been longer, with more build, it would have ranked higher, but it simply fell short in that category.

like i said, it was a good show. would i recommend it? yes, but to no one who hasn't bee acquainted to morbid media.
