The Boy and the Heron

Jan 6, 2024

Being somewhat of a Ghibli fan, this was one of my most highly anticipated films for many years. Unfortunately, it left a lot to be desired or my expectations were too high.  Story Probably the most boring Ghibli story since Tales from Earthsea. I even found Earwig and the Witch more interesting than this, because even though it was repetitive, it at least had conflict. The first act is mostly a generic slice of life where nothing happens. All it's about is a child trying to adjust to his new stepmother. Most of the second act is just your basic adventure film. Things really don’t get... See full review

Ascendance of a Bookworm Season 2

May 17, 2020

Like somebody else said, this isn't like part 1 so some of the things in it are going to throw you off. I was very intrigued by the concept of a girl who tries to become a best selling author in a world where books are a rarity so to see that get taken away was very disappointing. They replaced that with a plot about how she begins working at a church while dealing with traumatized orphans and an abusive leader. This makes for a mean-spirited tone and a bunch more depressing themes. The first one was dark in the sense that it was about a girl fighting a deadly disease but this one makes part 1 seem like a... My Hero Academia Movie 2: Heroes:Rising

Mar 6, 2020

I am quite a fan of the Academia series. I had watched up to three seasons and still need to get caught up with it but this movie is not quite as good as the show. To start with, the movie was a confusing case in that it felt like it was something to be enjoyed as its own but also felt just like a My Hero Academia episode at the end. But still, people who haven't seen the show will still be confused about a few parts and people who have will be left feeling like it could've had more. To go into deeper detail, the story is the main problem. It still has all the decent characters we've come to know but I... See full review

Violet Evergarden

Sep 15, 2019

Even though I'm not a fan of KyoAni, I have tried watching several of their works. I don't know why, I guess I can't resist the animation style, and I'm sure that they can be capable of creating great things but everything I've seen from them fell short. A lot of their projects tend to focus a lot on melodrama and there's a lot of crying and tragedy in their stories. This out of the ones (Clannad, Kanon, and Air) I've seen appears to be the most darkest of them all due to its emphasis on war as well as dealing with stuff such as heartbreak, depression, and grief, maybe since it's because the main character... Cannon Busters (2019)

Aug 21, 2019

Its story and even its characters are derivative of other anime such as Cowboy Bebop, Samurai Champloo, Trigun, and Michiko to Hatchin but lacks the charm of what made Cowboy Bebop, Samurai Champloo and Trigun good. I was surprised that Shinichiro Watanabe didn't even touch this show. Many things about this show take cues from few of the previously mentioned anime that he was involved with, from the characters, to the story, to the genre, to the art style (which was silly at some points), to even the music sounds like Cowboy Bebop's jazz soundtrack. If you've seen these anime, you would've already seen... See full review

Tenchi Muyo! Ryo-Ohki

Feb 9, 2019

While I`m biased since I don`t like harem anime, I thought this was a formulaic series with nothing much special going for it. There`s little to be interested at here besides Ryo-ohki, who is a sweet and cute cat-rabbit animal with a personality and the first episode when compared to the rest of the episodes in the series was okay. This also had some good music, though I disliked the dub, the actors sounded like they were just reading their lines and Ayeka`s voice sounded too old for her physical age. It started off great and interesting until Ryoko came along. I was interested in what will happen next but... See full review

March Comes in like a Lion 2nd Season

Oct 12, 2018

I was excited to watch this season because I kind of liked the first one and it may end up being one of my top ten anime. I started watching bits and pieces of this one and boy, was I disappointed. I watched up to episode 5 and then kind of just wanted to give up, especially after hearing about how dramatic this season gets. Okay, here comes my problems with this season. They shifted the focus of Rei's point of view to Hina's. A lot of the season starts focusing on Hina and her reactions to the conflicts she encounters rather than Rei's. She encounters bullying during her third year of middle school and... See full review

March Comes in like a Lion

Oct 1, 2018

I have been avoiding this anime for like two years now, thinking it was "Oh... another silly melodrama". So, I waited until the anime was finished airing, then I checked out a few clips of it and thought maybe it wouldn't be as bad as I thought. It turns out in some ways, I was right, there were a couple of overemotional parts but the anime in general was fairly decent. I was worried about how the story would turn out from the beginning. The anime is more like a Kyoani anime, since you have your male protagonist meet and befriend some girls. It has a little melodrama in it, but it doesn't try to... See full review

My Hero Academia

Sep 16, 2018

I haven't seen much shounen anime. I watched bits and pieces of Naruto and Dragon Ball Z so this is my first shounen anime I actually sat through and watched the whole way through. I was a little leery of it since I heard it's a superhero anime that's based on Marvels and DC Comics and I was never much of a fan of their movies but I was surprised that I actually found this anime quite enjoyable. That made me think that maybe I don't like watching superhero films because the theater makes them loud and all that and I am sensitive to loud sounds, I thought it was also the speed of them. It's weird though... See full review

Michiko & Hatchin

Aug 30, 2018

The plot is inconsistent, like there was a subplot where Hatchin was chasing after a thief who took her shoes in episode 3 but by midway episode 4, that subplot is completely thrown out the window. Though, the main plot is a buddy road trip show about two young girls who clash a lot, the writer did put a fresh twist on it but it ended up being executed pathetically. Michiko and Hatchin’s relationship is cliched, starting off not really liking each other but then growing to genuinely care for each other. None of the characters are particularly likeable, Michiko, while a refreshingly cool, badass black... See full review

Tales of Symphonia the Animation: Tethe'alla Episode

May 7, 2018

The story is rushed and all over the place and I know that since it's so short, they didn't have enough time to shoehorn in a lot of things from the game, but since the game is so long, I think they should've made this into a regular T.V. series than in OVA. That way, they can flesh out these complex characters and include more events that happened in the game. While, I can do with a few changes, such as the whole Chocolat thing because I don't care much for her, I would've loved if the series had stayed much more faithful to the game. There is too much crying in it, while the game has came out in the time... See full review

Mary and the Witch's Flower

Jan 19, 2018

The opening scene was fantastic to watch, too bad Mary's adventure wasn't as wonderful as the first scene. She starts off as a bored, lonely kid who appears to have depression. She has no friends, no parents at the moment, no games, no T.V., nothing to entertain her so she offers to help out around the house instead but she messes everything up. Are these people poor or something? Why doesn't Mary have games or toys to play with?

The characters seem pretty inconsistent and I'll tell you why here. Mary is a petulant and dishonest character. She despises Peter and shows no respect to him after he... See full review

Elsword: El-ui Yeoin

Jul 11, 2017

I really enjoyed the Elsword game but this was not my cup of tea. I got to half of the second episode and I thought, what's the point? I decided to drop it because it's cringey, there was not enough entertaining moments, the only part that was enjoyable was the beginning, before Aisha came in.

The characters from what I've seen were not how I remember their original selves. Elsword is passive but in the game, he stood up to Aisha when she starts fighting with him. Aisha is more brash than I saw her in the game. Elesis is a bit more hot-headed than she was in the game. And Eve, instead of conflicting... See full review

Eden of The East Movie II: Paradise Lost

Jun 28, 2017

Though, I don't really see the point in making two Higashi no Eden films, this at least provided more development to Akira's history and character. They did expand on his family, but I found the mother to be pretty cliched, being the cold parent who doesn't want to have anything to do with her son.

Though, I didn't find very many characters interesting here, except for maybe Saki and Micchan. The story was a little bit interesting but it's still too complicated and a bit too focused on there "Oh, has there been any terrorist attacks" thing and it idk, didn't make a lot of sense? Eden of The East Movie I: The King of Eden

Jun 23, 2017

Okay, why did this get a movie? I mean, I know the T.V. series ended badly and I probably wouldn't mind a little bit more or even a better ending to get a better conclusion, but was this really necessary? I don't think a way to conclude a series is by making a movie out of it when movies require conflict and this is exactly what this movie had. It was a sucky way to conclude a good-but-not-great series.

So, the movie starts off with Saki, in a taxi in New York. But that dang rude Taxi man goes off on her for some reason, drops her off somewhere suddenly, and leaves her there, leaving her phone and... See full review

Eden of the East

Jun 17, 2017

I am not a big fan of series and movies about apocalyptic worlds but this one is probably the best fictional work depicting an apocalyptic world ever. It was very interesting, sweet, and has a bit of everything in it, mystery, a bit of drama, comedy, suspense, action, sci-fi, romance, and thriller. Though, it's not a horror anime, it does keep me on the edge of my seat. Though, the anime might put off some people because of how confusing it is or if they can't stand certain characters' childish behaviors. The story has some things that didn't make any sense and confused me like how could no one got hit by... See full review

Non Non Biyori

Jun 14, 2017

The story is sort of about some country kids who have moved from Tokyo and are experiencing culture shock with their new environment as most people will, especially at a very young age like these girls are. It's a feel-good series that will brighten your days even if your sad with rare touching moments in it. Not a very original plot with cliched characters. I don't know why people are so into these characters, they're pretty much your typical whiny kid. The only one I like out of the bunch and is my favorite character is Natsumi, now she was fun to watch but not great because she does get explosive. But... See full review

Magical Girl Lyrical Nanoha

Jun 14, 2017

I only saw the first episode of this and then dropped it. Nanoha does not act like a nine-year-old. She is in third grade, yet she's very perceptive for a third grader and can be sickeningly sweet, too. She is simply a normal caring, idealistic third grader. I found Arisa very annoying and bratty. Like how she yelled at a dog to stop barking but she loves dogs? She's a hypocrite! There were some religious things in it, the thing that I hate the most
about anime. This show felt like a long time watching it and I kind of couldn't wait
for it to end.

Slayers

Mar 9, 2017

I saw the first episode of this and I thought it was quite one of the most mediocre anime I've seen next to Serial Experiments Lain. The character of Lina had such a bad temper that I couldn't stand her. Which is unfortunate because she seems to have a hidden heart but there is not enough moments for her to show her sweet side in order for me to care. She seems to have no hidden backstory to explain her behavior, she just seems to be the opposite of my much sweeter friend of the same age, Amy. Lina is just not likable!

Lina curses, shows aggressive and combative behavior which I would never have been... See full review

Cowboy Bebop: The Movie

Jan 18, 2017

Story: First of all, the story raised some questions and I couldn't follow it. Something about people getting sick from nanomachines? The story didn't seem to do the TV series justice. It takes place around Halloween and the characters are off to try and defeat Vincent and there's a tower that looks like an Eiffel Tower. The Halloween plot just seems to be unnecessarily added in there just to make Vincent look freaky than he already is. Characters: It was nice to see the characters especially Spike again, but I always felt that this movie was was disappointing compared to the series. I felt that... See full review

Little Witch Academia TV

Jan 9, 2017

First impressions:

The two Little Witch Academia movies were not that great but I still was glad that there was a TV series coming. The first movie was interesting and quite decent, though the second movie took everything that made the first movie great, from comedy to passable characters and made the main character insufferably selfish and bullies to make it even more painful to watch.

This T.V. series seems like it's a prequel for the first movie, it develops more backstory on the characters and the first episode is about Akko trying to find her way to the witch academy. I was... See full review

Hotarubi no Mori e

Jun 10, 2016

This film is a flashback of Hotaru as a child, growing up with a masked guy named Gin. There is a plot hole on Hotaru getting lost in a forest, as cliched as it seems, it's not really her getting lost that really concerns me but the reason on how she got lost. I don't know if she ran away from her parents or
what. There is also lots of hitting a child which I do not approve on. They're kind of played for humor but 6-year-old children can be really sensitive about getting hurt so I don't see why they would whack a child on the head. A good spanking would be better. But like how much Gin hurts a child... See full review

I know that this anime came out a year ago, so it may not have had much problems back then but this anime is not going to be remembered for years due to its tiresome cliches, squeaky dub voice acting, and art that brings nothing new to the table. I did not expect this to be so poorly animated and filled with unlikeable and generic characters. Story:
What seems like a normal day in the school gets ruined by a giant mushroom attacking the kids. All of a sudden, Akko and her friends get carried by the mushroom. This is just a sickening scene and it might be too scary for little kids. The kids go to the... See full review

Aria the Animation

May 12, 2016

"No sappy lines allowed"

I have one word to say about this: Predictable

I don't get what's with everyone's hype with this anime. It's boring, unoriginal, and saccharine. If you are looking for a fast-paced, entertaining anime, then Aria the Animation is not the best choice to watch. Sure it may have a good idea but the story is boring and very slow-paced, not for those looking for action.

Story:

Too much flashbacks, expositions, and development makes this enjoyable likely for people who enjoy slow-paced slice of life anime. But I was having a hard time sitting through... See full review

I was introduced to this anime by a quiz comparing Asuka from Neon Genesis and Mikoto from Railgun. A lot of people said that they liked Mikoto better so I decided why not check it out. This anime looks kind of cute. It's a shame that the series had a lot of potential and I really wanted to enjoy it, but the writing and characters needed work and there are parts where the drama just doesn't work. This has some of the worst writing I have ever seen. There is not much interesting characters to be found here, they're all pretty archetypal and overwritten. I don't find this anime as emotional as some thought it was. Though, it is quite refreshing and a pretty decent anime. The characters were saccharine. Yuuko is almost a goody-two-shoes. This anime was so slow-paced, I don't even know how it was able to get all 26 episodes, KyoAni is known for having 24 episode series, but Nichijou should've been shorter because the of the slow pace and the failure of the series in Japan. I could see why because I do not recommend this anime. The first half was fine, it was really funny, the characters were better directed, and it was refreshing to have two stories in the... Non Non Biyori Repeat

Apr 24, 2016

This is sort of a prequel to Non Non Biyori, which is a flashback to the time we spent with these characters. It sandwhiches in additional story elements that the first season missed out on. Now, I am not fond of Non Non Biyori, I think it's a very silly, cliched series and don't get why most people loved it so much, they begged for a sequel... and here it is.. Now, I'm not saying it's completely bad because Natsumi was a good character and I'm glad to see her again, but I guess having a sequel for her made her character go downhill. This is the first Trigger anime I watched. I heard of it before, but I was worried to watch it because it had a kid protagonist and usually, kid protagonists are bratty, overly silly, precocious and stereotypical. I thought that Akko was going to be one of the annoying characters but she actually wasn't that annoying, and she carried the story well.

Though, the characters don't bring that much new to the table. Akko is an aloof fourteen-year-old girl who has an attitude, and too childish. Don't be like "Oh, it's for a younger audience. I don't care if it's cliched!" I'd like something... See full review

Humanity Has Declined

Feb 19, 2016

The beginning of this anime started off stupidly and I was about to stop it but gladly I didn't. Though, it still wasn't a solid entry into the anime world. A young girl who has a simple name (as does everyone else in the series) or rather likes to be called a simple name, "Human" is somehow surviving in a world where humanity has seemed to have dwindled. In the creativity department, it isn't good nor bad, it's just average but most other times, it isn't being creative, rather it rips off other anime and more tropes than any Disney film could ever imagine.
