The Idaten Deities Know Only Peace

Nov 21, 2023

After finishing this show, I was left with mixed emotions. On the one hand, the animation is beautiful and the concept intriguing. On the other, almost none of the characters are likable and the story is all over the place. I understand the writers were attempting to establish moral ambiguity by making the "gods" no better than the "monsters," but they only succeeded in making the Itaden as unsympathetic as the demons they're trying to kill. There are a few characters on either side who might be palatable on their own, but together they're just...awful. (Except... See full review

Undead Murder Farce

Oct 21, 2023

I'm not sure how this show received such high ratings, given than it is far less interesting than the premise suggests. Undead Murder Farce is supposed to be a mystery, but the story constantly switches genres, storylines, and characters without any rhyme or reason. Not to mention the so-called mysteries are needlessly complicated. Even after the ridiculously detailed explanations, it's difficult to figure out what happened or how it's related to the overall storyline. If you're looking for a good detective anime with a morally ambiguous protagonist, you're much better off watching... See full review

Heavenly Delusion

Oct 15, 2023

I wanted to like this show, I really did. The premise was interesting, the animation was gorgeous, and I love a good post-apocalyptic tale. Unfortunately, things fell apart after the first few episodes. One of the main problems is that you're constantly getting whiplash from plot twists and/or flashbacks which destroy the narrative you've been following up until that point. It's difficult to enjoy the story when you're always asking yourself what the heck is going on. Another thing that turned me off was the inclusion of sensitive and/or triggering topics like sexual abuse and suicide. Not... See full review

My Happy Marriage

Oct 9, 2023

While I wouldn't call this show bad, it's certainly disappointing. Despite being billed as a mature romance, My Happy Marriage is neither mature nor romantic. There's little chemistry between the main couple, the sub-plots are confusing and needlessly complex, and aside from the female lead becoming (slightly) less of a doormat there is almost no character development. As a result, although I didn't completely dislike the show, I won't bother watching the second season. To be honest, I'm not sure why one is even necessary, since they tied up all the major plot points at the end of... See full review

Why Raeliana Ended up at the Duke's Mansion

Jun 28, 2023

As a fan of the manga, I was thrilled to see it adapted for the screen. While the show isn't perfect, I found it diffcult to understand why some viewers were so disappointed. After all, the anime is largely faithful to the source material and contains just the right blend of romance, comedy, and suspense to keep things interesting. To be fair, the animation can be a bit wonky at times, but not enough to detract from the story. There are also a few plot points which aren't fully explained, but given the ending there will likely be a second season to elaborate on what wasn't... See full review

The Devil is a Part-Timer! 2

May 24, 2023

I loved the first season of The Devil is a Part-Timer!, so I was hyped for the sequel. Unfortunately, as so often happens the second season was nowhere near as good as its predecessor. For starters, the animation is worse-quite a feat, considering that season 2 was released a decade later. Also, the latest installment pays much less attention to the main character's job and experiences in the workplace, which was the backbone of the first season and provided much of the character-building/comedy. Even worse, the story is all over the place and there is only a half-hearted attempt to explain what... See full review

Endo and Kobayashi Live! The Latest on Tsundere Villainess Lieselotte

Apr 10, 2023

Seriously, this show is so underrated. It's got everything: a great opening, beautiful animation, adorable characters, and a sweet love story (or two). I love how Endo and Kobayashi focuses on not one but two (main) couples, which makes rooting for them even more fun and adds variety to the various romantic scenes/situations. Also, I appreciated how rather than taking the easy way out and making the villainess the stereotypical evil woman, Endo and Kobayashi puts Lieselotte's actions into context using her past experiences and current intentions. Rarely if ever does anime... See full review

More than a Married Couple, but Not Lovers.

Jan 21, 2023

I'm not normally an ecchi fan, but this show grew on me after a couple episodes. Despite the cliche premise and (many) contrived romantic encounters, the relationship between the main couple is sweet and their feelings for one another are deeper than mere sexual attraction. Of course, given the genre there is plenty of focus (a little too much, honestly) on the physical aspect of the relationship, but over time the characters come to respect and care for one another as well as wanting to hook up. There may be plenty of "oops, I accidentally touched her boob" moments, but... See full review

I'm the Villainess, So I'm Taming the Final Boss

Dec 28, 2022

I don't understand why this show got so much hate, because as long as you don't go into it with unrealistic expectations, it's an enjoyable ride. After all, even if you aren't an otome fan, you've got to admire how I'm the Villainess mocks romance tropes while also telling a sweet love story. Seriously, the protagonist and the demon king have the cutest relationship! It's also nice how they figure out their feelings for one another early on instead of spending the whole show awkwardly flirting. While there are a couple of plotholes and the story could benefit from more... See full review

Komi Can't Communicate

Feb 1, 2022

As a fellow anxiety sufferer, I was impressed by Komi Can't Communicate. Anime doesn't always do the best job portraying mental illness, but this show offers a goofy yet compassionate commentary on anxiety, insecurity, and the need for acceptance. I'm looking forward to the second season!

Shiki

Jan 18, 2022

To be honest, I found Shiki overrated. Not only is the animation awkward-have you seen the characters' hairstyles and ridiculously pointy chins?-but many are unlikable, which made it hard to sympathize with them or become invested in the story. After a few episodes I was almost rooting for the vampires to win!

Tokyo Revengers

Sep 24, 2021

Let me start out by saying that I didn't expect a show about a bunch of delinquents to emphasize the power of friendship, but that's exactly what Tokyo Revengers does--albeit in a less idealized way than most anime. While the show certainly has its flaws, the characters are likeable and compelling; and the plot has enough twists to keep you on the edge of your seat without being confusing. Although the protagonist's crybaby tendencies can be annoying, I enjoyed watching him progress from being a weakling who couldn't save anyone to someone who's willing to stand up for the people who are important to... Koikimo

Aug 14, 2021

To be honest, I'm not really sure how to feel about this show. Pros: The ML agrees to wait for the FL until she's an adult. His interactions with her also lead him to develop a greater respect for women. Cons: In the beginning, the ML forces his affections on the FL despite being told repeatedly that she has no desire to pursue a relationship with him. Also, the age gap is quite significant, even if he is willing to put off having a relationship until she's in college. It's more than a little unsettling to see a man pursuing someone who is legally (and emotionally) still a child. In my opinion... See full review

Don't Toy With Me, Miss Nagatoro

Jul 23, 2021

To be honest, after watching the first episode I wrote off Nagatoro as a sadistic bitch. However, as the show progressed and her relationship with the main character deepened, I realized that she was just bad at expressing her feelings. Despite the raunchy humor, I loved watching the sparks fly as she teased the ML--falling in love with him in the process. Even if you're not an ecchi fan, I encourage you to give this show a chance, if only for the adorable characters! You won't regret it.

Shadows House

Jul 9, 2021

Until I watched this show, I never imagined that an anime could be so heartwarming and heartbreaking at the same time. A lot of people have compared it to The Promised Neverland--personally, I like Shadows House better. In my opinion, it does a better job of illustrating the relationships between the characters as well as making them relatable to viewers. Not to mention, Emilico is freaking adorable! There's also more than enough creepiness to satisfy my inner horror junkie and plot twists that keep you guessing without being too confusing. I can't wait for season 2!

Horimiya

May 30, 2021

I absolutely adore Horimiya. Not only is the relationship between the main couple super sweet, I love how the show doesn't focus solely on them but elaborates on the supporting characters as well. Not to mention the animation is gorgeous! *SPOILER ALERT* To be honest, one of the main reasons I didn't give Horimiya a 10/10 is because Yuki and Toru didn't get together. They're so perfect for each other!

The Quintessential Quintuplets

Apr 14, 2021

Let me preface this by saying that, as a straight female, I rarely (if ever) watch harem anime. However, I gave this show a chance--and loved it. Not only do the girls have quirky and adorable personalities, but the main character treats them like actual human beings instead of groping them/falling face first into their boobs/trying to peep on them in the bath. I also appreciated that none of the girls fall for him at first sight, but rather come to like/respect the MC over time (the way it works in the real world). So, even if harem anime isn't your thing, give this one a chance. You won't be... See full review

MM!

Aug 6, 2020

I don't usually watch harem anime, but I found this show to be a refreshing change from the perverted and/or totally bland MC who has several girls drooling over him for no apparent reason. It was nice to see an MC who treated his love interests with respect rather than constantly trying to get in their pants (or skirts, as the case may be). That said, the show is ecchi, which means it's more than a little raunchy--so watch at your own risk. Still, even if you're not into S & M, it's good for a laugh!

Amagi Brilliant Park

Jun 16, 2020

This show can be bizarre and occasionally raunchy. If someone walks in on you, you'll have a hard time explaining what the hell you're watching! Still, the character development is good and the story is compelling. The main character starts out as a self-absorbed jerk and ends up being a decent guy. The comedy isn't bad, either.

Toilet-Bound Hanako-kun

Apr 11, 2020

I was a little hesitant to watch this show at first, since the title made it sound kind of perverted. Luckily, Hanako-kun is a sweet and colorful anime--a real gem. The characters are quirky yet adorable; and the animation is lovely. While the show can be dark at times, it has more than enough humor to make up for the sad moments. I'm psyched for the second season!

Hanasakeru Seishounen

Nov 12, 2019

To be honest, I couldn't finish this show because I was too creeped out by the age gap between the main character and her love interests. Kajika is only 14, but three of the guys in her harem are in their late teens/early twenties. It's basically the equivalent of an eigthth grader dating a college student--aka statutory rape. Also, the characters weren't very sympathetic. For example, 3 women killed themselves because of the way Eugene treated them--a fact that's swept under the rug. And Kajika's dad sends her to a remote island at the age of 2, then proceeds to ignore her for the next 12 years. WTF?

Sep 21, 2019

Servant x Service starts out slow, but the characters and the relationships between them create a story that's so sweet you might get cavities. I especially liked the relationship between the main couple, Lucy and Hasebe. They were so adorable! I loved watching him transform from an irresponsible playboy who asks her out for fun to someone who really cares about her. There's also plenty of comedy from the supporting cast. How often do you find (even in anime) a manager who's a stuffed rabbit? 10/10 would watch again.

Gangsta.

Sep 17, 2019

First off, this show is not for the faint of heart. Gangsta contains a number of mature themes, including drug use, prostitution, and physical/sexual abuse. That being said, Gangsta does an excellent job of dealing with these topics. Rather than glossing over or glamorizing them like many mafia style anime, the show uses these issues to thoroughly develop its characters and explain their motivations. The fact that it prominently features a deaf character who isn't stereotyped or portrayed as weak is another bonus. Nicholas might not be able to hear, but he can still kick ass! My only complaint is that the... See full review
