Mobile Suit Gundam Wing

Aug 30, 2012

This is one of the first anime I ever watched and probably the first long series I finished. It is the first anime series I purchased in its entirety (together with “Record of Lodoss War”) and probably the first anime I watched that had political overtones. It also has a special place, because it was one of the very few anime that my older sister enjoyed with me. It just felt way different than anything else I was watching at the time (“Dragonball Z” and such) and it opened my eyes to anime that could have giant robots and not be silly like “Mazinger” or “Voltes... Mobile Suit Gundam SEED

Aug 30, 2012

I had only watched “Gundam Wing” of the Gundam franchise before I watched this series. I had liked “Wing” enough to watch it a couple of times from beginning to end.  So I came with high hopes and I was not disappointed with “Seed”. This review also refers to the second season titled “Gundam Seed Destiny”. WHAT’S GOOD? If you have watched anything Gundam, then you know that you’ll find all that good mecha stuff here.  You’ll see plenty of powerful mechas fighting each other and some extra stuff that doesn’t make an... Mobile Suit Gundam 00

Aug 30, 2012

As a big fan of “Gundam Wing” and “Gundam Seed”, I was eager to watch the newest epic Gundam series and it did not disappoint. Consider this review for both seasons. WHAT’S GOOD? All the good stuff of the Gundam series is present.here.  Cool main characters, exciting one-on-one mecha battles, interesting military maneuvers and large-scale battles.  There’s some melodrama but not to the point of “Gundam Seed”.  This is just an epic mecha series with characters who are not really kids, so that stands out from many other mecha series.  It... Fullmetal Alchemist

Aug 30, 2012

A classic. WHAT’S GOOD? Almost everything is highly commendable. The main characters are likeable and the support cast is very memorable with character designs that stand out from the rest of the anime. The relationship between the main characters is strong and significant through the whole of the story. The plot development is great.  There are some scenes that are tough to watch with one of them even bringing me close to tears and another one that’s just very sad, so you know you will remember this series forever. There’s a lot of comedy and some seriously creepy stuff. ... See full review

Code Geass: Lelouch of the Rebellion

Aug 30, 2012

I am always in the lookout for grown-up anime, the ones that stand out from the crowd of supernatural schoolboy and magical schoolgirl me-too anime.  I was very pleasantly surprised with Code Geass, even though it had high school teenagers, mecha and some supernatural stuff, but the way everything was done was the key to its success. By the way, this review counts for both seasons, since I’m treating them as the entirety of the show. WHAT’S GOOD? Great animation. Crisp, colorful and the mecha battles are usually fast and furious.  Maybe you can find fault with the Clamp... See full review

Magical Shopping Arcade Abenobashi

Aug 29, 2012

WHAT’S GOOD? Abenobashi is hilarious.  That's all you need to know.   Oh, you want more? Fine. Every episode is a  spoof on a certain genre.  There's one episode making fun of mecha anime, one making fun of war movies, one making fun ofHollywoodmovies (the funniest episode of all), etc. There are some funnier than others but they are all enjoyable. There’s a story bonus in this anime and that is that there's actually an emotional plot behind it all.  It is about two kids coming to terms with the death of a family member and the consideration of fate and their... Valkyria Chronicles

Aug 29, 2012

I watched like 5 episodes of this and I dropped it. Why? Because it was so unrealistic it was dumb. WHAT’S GOOD? I greatly enjoy alternate history treatments, which was what drove me to start watching this series.  As a bonus, I liked the cell-shade type of style, which really fit the material, in my opinion. Also, tanks are cool.  But that's it. WHAT’S BAD? The male protagonist is regarded as an accidental genius.  A laid-back young man who can find the weakness in any plan and exploit it. But this guy is no Lelouch Lamperouge (Code Geass). I dropped the series right... See full review

Umineko: When They Cry

Aug 29, 2012

WHAT’S GOOD? The premise sounded great, with 18 people trapped in an island and being picked off one by one by a witch claiming “interest” for services rendered to the incredibly rich head of the family that’s supposed to pass his heritance to his greedy offspring.  *SPOILER OF 2ND EPISODE* By the second episode, there were already six people dead, and what made it cool was not knowing if it was really because of the witch and her supernatural abilities or if it was through normal human means.  Animation and character designs are very well done.  Deaths are... Shakugan no Shana

Aug 29, 2012

I dropped this anime after about 8-10 episodes, even though it had a promising, dark first episode.  The problem was that very soon it just settled on the average, typical anime tropes instead of providing something new. WHAT’S GOOD? The animations is pretty good for the most part, but in some episodes they get budget-conscious. The story is interesting enough but it is very reminiscent to "Bleach".  It has monsters that regular humans cannot see, and these monsters go around consuming people's souls or essences.  There are especially-trained warriors that come to our... My-Hime

Aug 29, 2012

This anime was going well for a while until I noticed that it was just one more average entry of its kind.   WHAT’S GOOD? If you don't mind traditional brainless anime with schoolgirls that have superpowers and monsters that seem to only affect them and nobody else, then go ahead.  It's more of the same but done more prettily. I really like the animation here.  The fights, explosions, character designs and their "pets" designs as well.  It's a shame that the rest wasn't up to my taste, because I love wolves, and there's a cool lady that has a mechanical wolf as her... Penguindrum

Aug 29, 2012

Man, when I dropped this anime and read several reviews in different sites, I felt like someone who could not comprehend why an Oscar-winning movie was worth the unanimous praise.  Everybody was throwing around the "visionary" and "nothing like it" and "an excellent example of what anime can be" comments. I just thought it was random, weird and silly.  The story was compelling for a bit, until after 5 episodes or so, when it started getting really weird. At that point, I stopped to think if I cared enough to continue it. Then I said, no. WHAT’S GOOD? The... See full review

Kiba

Aug 29, 2012

I dropped this show after 10 episodes or so, but I wanted to like it. WHAT’S GOOD? Main character looks cool and so do other characters and their pets. Fighting scenes are well done. The story is surprisingly for the genre, very unpredictable.  Supposedly dead characters pop up again episodes later and people get captured or visit a different dimension in the middle of a fight or crisis.  You never know what's going to happen.   WHAT’S BAD? The main character looks cool but has a bland personality of a turnip-with-an-attitude.  This is the guy that's supposedly... See full review

Kaze no Yojimbo

Aug 29, 2012

I only watched about 5 episodes of this series and it might be a good cure for insomnia. WHAT’S GOOD? The promise of a good story? Nothing grabbed my attention. WHAT’S BAD? It is boring.  That's all.  This is the classic "Yojimbo" story of two rival factions and one character manipulating both without them really knowing about it.  This time it involves a train laden with gold and a bunch of mysteries and shady characters. Actually, the story sounded better written than being watched. The animation is erratic.  It goes from decent to really crappy in almost... See full review

Eureka Seven

Aug 29, 2012

This seems to be a well-rated, popular series, but I dropped it after 5 or so episodes.  It just wasn't for me. WHAT’S GOOD? The animation is pretty good, eye-catching stuff. WHAT’S BAD? Mecha that air-surf on boards look cool for a short while and then just settles on being weird.  I mean, the whole anime will show scenes of surfing mechas battling other mecha.  Maybe the enemies will surf too but I didn't get far enough to see it.  As a big Gundam fan (the more serious of the series), this "radical" take on mecha just doesn't hold my interest for long. The... See full review

Burst Angel

Aug 29, 2012

I only watched 5 episodes of this series and dropped out.  Maybe it gets better but based on what I saw; I wasn't keen on devoting hours to it.   WHAT’S GOOD? Some of the character designs are appealing, yet their personalities or "attitudes" are not.   WHAT’S BAD? One of the main characters is a male-looking girl named Joe.  This might be somebody's cup of tea, but for a main character that I was going to see a lot of, she wasn't that interesting. Especially, because it seems her only job is to save her ditzy best friend, another main character that has a... See full review

Blade of the Immortal

Aug 29, 2012

I decided to watch this anime based on the main character's design.  I had seen him in a couple of manga covers and thought he was like a samurai Wolverine, maybe with a carefree attitude like a typical ronin.  Too bad the anime did not support my vision.   WHAT’S GOOD? Animation is fine.  Main character looks cool. The series is short. I don’t know.  Nothing made an impression on me. WHAT’S BAD? I have always enjoyed samurai characters that employ many swords in one fight, even if it is a silly notion.  There was a villain in "Rurouni... See full review

Basilisk

Aug 29, 2012

I actually watched the live-action movie "Shinobi: Heart Under Blade" before the anime, which is based on the same story.  I did not like the movie and I don't know why I thought the anime would fare better. WHAT'S GOOD? The animation and character designs are all great.  The fights are interesting, usually involving tactical decisions that trounce the opponent's strategy.  Some finish quite quickly, but all come down to one result: one character will die.  WHAT'S BAD? Most likely, one character will perish per episode and each rival clan begins with eight main ninjas or... See full review
