WHAT’S GOOD?
Abenobashi is hilarious. That's all you need to know.
Oh, you want more?
Fine.
Every episode is a spoof on a certain genre. There's one episode making fun of mecha anime, one making fun of war movies, one making fun ofHollywoodmovies (the funniest episode of all), etc. There are some funnier than others but they are all enjoyable.
There’s a story bonus in this anime and that is that there's actually an emotional plot behind it all. It is about two kids coming to terms with the death of a family member and the consideration of fate and their ability to change it. That sounded a bit heavy, but that's the surprising part. Though this anime is about 90% comedy, there’s some interesting takes on fate, and on life and death from the point of view of kids. The last couple of episodes deal a lot more with this side of the plot than the rest of the series.
WHAT’S BAD?
It is very random and the animation at times could be considered as ugly. But hey, this is a comedy series and as that, it succeeds splendidly.
It is also a very light series, so if you are looking for more seriousness than comedy, this is not it.
RECOMMEND?
Yes, it’s very funny. Great for anime veterans to spot all the references in the different spoofs.
A comment on the ending. At first, I didn't think the ending was the best way to finish the series. I thought it was going to be more of a life lesson for the characters but turned out to be a little more whimsical. However, the ending has grown on me over time and I think the main character's decision would be a decision many people would take if they had the means to do it.
What was the decision? Well, watch the anime then. Better be ready to laugh!
