Eureka Seven

Aug 29, 2012

This seems to be a well-rated, popular series, but I dropped it after 5 or so episodes.  It just wasn't for me.

WHAT’S GOOD?

The animation is pretty good, eye-catching stuff.

WHAT’S BAD?

Mecha that air-surf on boards look cool for a short while and then just settles on being weird.  I mean, the whole anime will show scenes of surfing mechas battling other mecha.  Maybe the enemies will surf too but I didn't get far enough to see it.  As a big Gundam fan (the more serious of the series), this "radical" take on mecha just doesn't hold my interest for long.

The characters looked appealing but their personalities did not impress me.

Yes, it is yet another kid-with-hidden-powers story.  Yes, that's not remotely interesting anymore.

RECOMMEND?

I can’t say "don't watch it", because I didn't see even a third part of it.  Give it a try, maybe you can side with the populist vote if you are willing to watch another story of kids piloting unique mecha that surf.

I agree with Richaka in pointing out that Renton doesn't really have hidden powers; if I had to make a generalization I would say it's more like love conquers all.  I haven't watched a lot of mecha anime because it's not really my thing, but I like this one because Nirvash, actually has a soul, he is a character that develops just like the rest of them, it's just a little subtle.

But the main reason I watched this anime was for the love story, and of course the biggest moment of that story line wasn't until the last episode.

I would say, maybe give it until episode 13 or 14 and then see what you think!  I mean, considering it's a 50 episode anime, deciding after only 5 episodes, is kind of short changing it.

wow. despite being aware that you've only seen 5 episodes, and pointing this out, you still make some pretty sweeping comments there. It is not just a "kid-with-hidden-powers story" in fact for the first 26 or so episodes renton doesn't have any hidden powers, except that he makes the lead heroine fall for him (that's his power for the following 24). All he has going for him is he's a first class mechanic, and that takes a backseat in the story really.you make E7 sound so generic... and while it certainly has its generic moments I challenge you to find another anime with the same feel and style (apart from bonen no xam'd which is a spiritual sequel of sorts). This show is one of the kings of character development, and no one in the cast doesn't get some at some point.

But anyway... If it's not your thing so be it, this and mawaru penguindrum are two of my favourite series, and your review of that was in a similar vein so I imagine we have opposing tastes..
