Both Persona 5 and Summertime Rendering are action mysteries, with some comedy sometimes! The main character comes to small town Japan only to walk into a supernatural murder plot that only he can stop. They gather their rag-tag crew to save the day.

THe main characters of both are arguably the stupidest characters in the show, and this trait regularly gets them into huge trouble. They can’t help but follow their hearts (though in the case of Kanako in MariaHolic, she has no specific target) and give their absolute all to get a girlfriend. Either would be unbearable as a male character, but making them female is a bit more endearing and novel.

Love Stage and Budokan both explore, to some degree, gay romance in the entertainment industry. While the roles are switched, we see one character fanatically pining after the other, trying to gain that person’s attention and affection. They differ wildly in the explicitness of the romances and sexual content.

Whether you came for it or not, I doubt you could leave either of these series without some understanding of the fan culture they cover. Some of the most interesting parts of Bukokan are the interactions between all the idol fans, similarly, Genshiken finds it’s strength in showing the characters pursue their hobbies together.

The Lost Village

This may sound mean, but both succeed on some level of being so bad they’re funny. They start relatively strong, with decent mysteries, but go completely off the rails by the end. As mentioned before, they are both mysteries, and both are aiming for a suspenseful atmosphere. They also both have interpersonal conflicts that are exasterbated by the situations at hand.

Like Toradora, Fuukoi features a passive, nerdy guy and a percocious, tsundere girl romance. They even share the "If you scratch my back, I'll scratch yours" initial premise. They are the only people who can help each other get the one they really want... at least at first. Both have elements of a live-in lover storyline, even if Toradora does not technically count.

An opposites attract love story! Nerdy guy, flashy girl, lots of ecchi situations. The lead in Dress Up Darling is less of a tsudere, and so if that is your thing, your milage may vary.

Aside from the, you know, incest, the dynamics of the main couple are similar. The nerdy but dependable male lead puts up with the attitude and violence of the lead female, not initially considering a romance. However, the characters warm up to each other. Some tension is added by a love triangle.

Both shows bring us into the multiverse. Takes a bit for our heroes to orient themselves and take control of the situation. Childhood friends with romantic tension included in both. Both have emotional climaxes that bring the shows to close. Warning: Abenobashi is, on the face of it, much more goofy and slapstick. Both are genuinely funny though.

Steins;Gate

Both Steins;Gate and Summertime Rendering deal with time travel. Both are quite brutal, emotional stories, but are also funny when they want to be. They both have ensemble casts of characters, and take time to develop more than just the main character and the love interest (though I would argue Steins;Gate succeeds more with this).
