Captivated, By You

Aug 19, 2021

The first four chapters are told from the perspectives of four different students and they all include some sort of interaction with an oddball named Hayashi. Hayashi is the type of person idealized in Dead Poets Society, who marches to the beat of feir own drum and who sees wasting time with "pointless" activities as a virtue. At first, I assumed that Hayashi would be the through-line throughout the series, but that isn't the case. Instead, the last four chapters don't include fem at all and are all centered around the faux-gloomy Nikaidou and feir classmate, Medaka, who has uncovered feir anti-social ruse. The reason behind why Nikaidou is trying to self-ostracize is kinda funny. The artwork seems to shift between the two sections as well, from being more precise to including more blurring in the shading. The characters have dead-eyed and straight-angled faces.

I appreciate the character interactions, the humor, and the general tone of this manga. It's cute, and at times gives off almost shounen-ai type vibes.
