I.O.N

I don't know exactly how to feel about this. On the one hand, it has a bouyant and fun atmosphere and a captivatingly quirky side character in Tagosaku. But on the other hand, the romance is very one-note and the psychic powers aren't actually all that interesting. The main tension throughout the story is the question of whether Mikado is interested in Ion because of feir psychic powers or because fe's a girl. And it's eventually revealed that Mikado femself doesn't even know what fe's feeling, which is a pretty cliched way to generate some makeshift "drama." Some of the plot developments can feel abrupt--like the backstory about the father or the sudden challenges or events that just pop up. I don't care for either of the love rivals and I don't think they add anything worthwhile to the story. I just find Kouki annoying and I disliked the focus on Minase in the middle few chapters. Ion's friends are largely forgettable. I think I liked the two main characters, though I found some of their actions corny and cliched. I definitely appreciated Tagosaku. Fe stares blankly ahead, feir almond-shaped eyes heightening the creepazoid aura. Fe also dons Ion's clothes and identity with humorous casualness. And I thought it was pretty funny how fe jumped out of the window.

The art is easily the worst aspect of this manga. It has very busy panels, with unnecessary effects and flowers and stuff going on. They use sunbeam lines made up of closely touching dots, which looked a bit awkward to my eyes. But more than that, the characters are shoddily drawn. The foreheads and eyes are often too big, and the hair is awkwardly and unnaturally placed on the head. Just look at the back portion of the hair in almost every shot and the hair-part in the side angle shots. Horrendously ugly. The hands are super distorted. The presumably "cat" ears they sometimes use for effect look more like aye-aye ears (which isn't a positive thing...nothing against aye-ayes though). And what odd half-shirt uniforms. I don't think I've seen that type of design before, and I'm not sure if it was a great choice.

4/10 story
2/10 art
5/10 characters
4/10 overall
