Badminton Girl

Dec 8, 2019

So as the title would suggest, this story is about a badminton net that came to life and fell in love with Hot Guy Seito...okay, not really. It's actually about a girl, Asahi, who lacks confidence in feir athletic abilities. But unbeknownst to femself, fe has a keen insight and is able to read feir opponents' moves--something that helps fem both in shogi and more relevantly in badminton. Asahi's best friend Umi is a powerful player in the small badminton club at their junior high and fe invites Asahi to join the club. There are several training montages and a total of four matches. All of which have extremely low stakes. Along the way, people learn to have fun while also pushing themselves to grow.

When Asahi is first asked to act as a stand-in for Ichika, I was a bit confused. Not because of the plot exactly (though that wasn't the clearest), but because I had thought Asahi and Ichika were the same person. They look basically the same. And speaking of people looking the same, Hot Guy Seito (the guy who didn't fall in love with the badminton net) looks almost identical to the female captain of the volleyball club. Characters all just kinda blend together. Then on top of that, the action shots don't look very good and the eyes take up half the face, so overall I didn't like the artwork. I know saucer eyes are a thing that some shojo manga do, but I don't think I really care for the technique.

There is an unrelated side-story called "Hyakunen Ningyou" about a girl named Rii who spends feir free time before and after school looking for feir friend that fe lost when fe was a child. And this story actually does involve inanimate objects coming to life (finally, a story I can understand!).

3/10 story
1/10 art
2/10 characters
2/10 overall
