Age of Adventure

There are two hooks to this manga that serve as sources of entertainment:

  1. There are several allusions to various films and actors, so it creates something of a mash-up parody. That said, I don't know how clever the references are, since I'm not very familiar with the movies being referenced. I'm probably missing some, but from what I've been able to glean, some of these chapters either reference or are inspired by Wild Bill Hickock (1923), The Thief of Bagdad (1924), Morocco (1930), Dracula (1931), Arsene Lupin (1932), The Count of Monte Cristo (1934), Treasure Island (1934), The Buccaneer (1938), Beau Geste (1939), The Wizard of Oz (1939), The Thief of Bagdad (1940), Captain Kidd (1945), Manon (1949).
  2. Within the plot itself, two halves of a treasure map end up being juggled around and exchanging hands between various factions and people, such that the two halves never get put together into a completed map until the very end of the story. During this, we see a bunch of schemes and betrayals and other stuff to get ahold of the treasure map halves. The characters cross continents and new interested parties get introduced as the adventure continues.

I don't think either of those hooks were particularly compelling. The princess's personality change after fe regained feir human body was the strangest part of the plot, in my opinion. And the ultimate conclusion of the story wasn't very satisfying or anything. In a postscript, the author admits that this story wasn't very well-structured and that aspects of it were made up as they went along, which created for some loose ends and awkward attempts at wrapping things up.

It should be noted that the author plays into some genre tropes of that time period, which includes some cultural caricaturing.

3/10 story
2/10 art
2/10 characters
3/10 overall
