Air Gear: Kuro no Hane to Nemuri no Mori -Break on the Sky-

May 31, 2012

Story/Characters: More-or-less, this carters to soley Air Gear fans who wanted more. However, I definitely think it's lacking. For anyone, who hasn't seen Air Gear, this wouldn't make any sense. For those who only watched the anime, the OVA is just a hodgepodge of scene without fluidity. It's as if they liked a certain arc, picked out a couple chapters they liked, and simply animated those without making the chapters in between. They're a lack of explanation and a real ending as well. So the only ones who wouldn't be completely confused are the ones who keep up with the manga and even there it's... See full review

Haganai: I Don't Have Many Friends

May 31, 2012

Story: The series starts off with an interesting premise. However, I think it falls flat while resorting to the typical high school scenes (festival, karoke, beach) without offering too much. I did think there was a decent amount of humour and I did laugh quite a bit. However, the ecchi was a bit much for me. I think they could have toned it down and tried to put more content in place. In addition, some aspects were poorly explained or weren't developed thoroughly. The conclusion was subpar if not just plain bad. It makes a decent laugh but I do think they are series out there that are both funny and full... See full review

Hanasaku Iroha

May 29, 2012

Story: I do enjoy slice of life but it can become boring if not done well. Hanasaku was definitely done well. It was very realistic but had enough drama, romance, comedy and wit to keep you wanting more. The plot doesn't go at a snail pace but is well developed without feeling like too much at once. There is some unpredictability which keeps you guessing. There are a few filler-ish episodes which brings down the series a bit but only a by a bit. It's definitely suitable for a wide range of audience without being too much in one extreme. Overall, it's a refreshing series that has plently to... See full review

The Mystic Archives of Dantalian

May 26, 2012

Story: I'm disappointed because I really liked the premise of this series. I thought it had promise but fell short. It felt a little all over the place. The individual stories were nice but they didn't seem to mesh and give a overall plot. There were also too many ideas that were introduced and not paned out well. If there's a sequel that makes up for the what the series was lacking then that will be good but otherwise, it falls short. However, it definitely does have unique ideas and does cause you to think. Animation: Really nice but can be a little scattered. I will remember Dantalian but not the... See full review

Uta no Prince-sama: Maji Love 1000%

Dec 13, 2011

Story: I didn't have too many high expectations on this series. It's based on a game. Imagine the game in anime form basically. Lackluster girl surrounded by "dreamy" guys in love with her for little/illogical reasons. However, one major plus, this is so bad that it's funny. It's so bad that it's actually hilarious. It's hard not to laugh so it's not all for nothing.  Animation: Bishounens. That's the major appeal of this series. Bright and bold colors with a pleathora of "hotties" so that you don't run out of eye candy. A great variety to look at especially if you have a... See full review

Blue Exorcist

Dec 13, 2011

Story: This series was made prematurely. It should have waited longer until it had more content to work with. It started off well but ended disappointly. I will come out and say that I am a fan of the manga and I was sad to see that it turned out like this. I liked the idea but it just didn't come through. It wasn't awful though and it was fun. I would like a second season but, with the way it ended, I doubt it. As a whole, the series is ok. Just ok.  Animation: I really liked the animation. I liked the character designs and the backgrounds. It was colorful and vibrant but dark and sinister when it... See full review

Bunny Drop

Dec 13, 2011

Story: Never knew slice of life could be so realistic and beautiful. There is little overdramatic or surprising that happens throughout the series. It's simply about a man in his 30's getting a daughter who is 6. It's heart warming, and cozy feeling. Episodes just fly by without needing to much fluff or drama. It's just the both of them settling in with each other and slowly opening up. One of the most endearing relationships I have seen in an anime. You can't not be happy after watching an episode. Animation: I loved the style of the series. It's definitely different and has a watercolor look to it. I... See full review

Dec 13, 2011

Story: A less funny verision of the first season. It had it's good points but not enough of them.  Animation: Same as season 1. Sound: Same as season 2. The opening and endings actually grew on me. Characters: Become more annoying as the series progressed. Overall: Alright but season 1 was better.

Blood-C

Dec 13, 2011

Story: This is one of the first series that I completely started anew with. Every week was the only new information I got about Blood-C. I finally understood what people mean when they say a series is slow. Waiting every week for something new to happen can be frustrating. That being said, Blood-C started of with a formula. Saya's journey to the cafe, school, and then the last couple of minutes was a fight with an Elder's Brain. The next couple of episodes felt the same with a little bit of information. Finally, things picked up. Things were getting mysterious, strange and outlandish. I was intrigued... See full review

One Piece Movie 6: Baron Omatsuri and the Secret Island

Sep 2, 2011

Story: It was a truly bizarre concept. I have never thought of One Piece as being creepy but this movie definitely was. However, we do get some action, comedy, and Luffy being a hero which is nice anytime of the day. It's not a complete waste but it is a pretty freaky movie. There are also some holes at the end though. Animation: I have never given something a question mark but that is how strange the animation was. Usually animation for anime movies is similar to the anime itself but has better quality. This was completely different animation. I've a seen a very tiny amount of this style in the anime but... One Piece Movie 7: Karakuri Castle's Mecha Giant Soldier

Aug 21, 2011

Story: Imagine a One Piece filler in the form of a movie. That basically explains this movie. One Piece fillers aren't that bad but they are definitely not something that I gravitate toward. However, this does have action and plently of comedy. You get some laughs but it pales in comparsion to Strong World film or real One Piece episodes. Also, this falls in right after Skypia but before Waters 7. Animation: Similar to the regular series but with much more fanservice. MUCH more fanservice. Sound: Hit or miss outrack. Baccano!

Aug 15, 2011

Story: For a story that consisted of several parts and characters, it came together very well. All the pieces fit together that kept you guessing until the last moment. There weren't several loose ends (even shows with a few characters, one plot, and 20+ episodes can't pull this off) and left you wanting more only because the journey was so great that you want to do it all over again. Baccano! tells it's story with style and plenty of humour. I wasn't expecting to be laughing so much and enjoying the story as much as I did (I don't do well with complicated stories because I become confused easily). Baccano... See full review

Eden of the East

Aug 9, 2011

Story: I had little idea about the this series was about before I started so I was basically like a blank state. Immediately from episode 1, I was hooked. The concept was intriguing and exciting. It leaves you guessing and does eventually explain things to you but gives you hints to figure it for yourself. The pacing was steady without being too fast or slow. If you like something that makes you think and has some action, I would definitely recommend this. I loved the political and social aspects. That wasn't something I was expecting and it was done incredibly well. Another thing was the comedy. It starts... See full review

The Disappearance of Haruhi Suzumiya

Aug 7, 2011

Story: I've mentioned this before but anime movies usually disappoint me. They like a really long filler episode. However, that did not apply to Vanishment of Haruhi Suzimaya. Imagine a really good arc of Haruhi Suzimaya. Ok, now translate that into a movie and that is what you get. You get the intricate story line, strange comedy, and unexpected twists. It had everything I loved from Haruhi Suzimaya. However, you will need to see both seasons in order to understand the movie (I had not seen season 2 and ended up being confused for a good portion). Haruhi Suzimaya lovers rejoice because this lives up to the... See full review

One Piece Movie 10: Strong World

Aug 6, 2011

Story: Usually movies based on an anime series tend to subpar and mediocre. It's like a long filler episode. However, that's not the case here and I was suprised. The movie was like a short One Piece arc that had all the elements that One Piece usually has. If you're a One Piece fan, then you'll be happily surprised. If you're not a One Piece fan, go watch and/or read it, then watch this and be happily surprised. Animation: It's similar to the series animation expect the quality up a little  higher. I already adore One Piece's animation so this is a great feast for your eyes. Also, I love the... See full review

Samurai Champloo

Aug 4, 2011

Story: The plot is generally about a threesome traveling together in order to find a samurai who smells of sunflowers. Throughout their journey, they have several encounters ranging from normal events in their time period to the strangely bizarre. For the most part, the series is episodic with a few flashbacks and one main plot. Although the idea of friends traveling together on a journey may not be new, Samurai Champloo definitely does it with style. It adds all these strange elements that surprisingly work. The pacing is terrific. Usually I wouldn't want to marathon an episodic series but I would not have... See full review

Aug 1, 2011

Story: Season one was disappointing so I intetionally did not intend on watching season two. However, I read the manga (which is actually good) and I missed seeing Sebastian. Therefore, I decided to watch season II. I should have known better. The plot is scattered and haphazard. It felt like it was all over the pace and pacing was not good to say the least. I had low expectations to start out and it didn't even meet those. The positive aspects of season one was the dark humour and interesting premise (although it fell flat). This didn't have much humour and the premise was....mediocre compared to the... See full review

Mushishi

Jul 30, 2011

Story: It's difficult to describe what mushi (what this series revolves around) is but the series itself isn't diffcult to understand. It does have deep and profound ideas but it's simple. Although the series is episodic and slow-paced, it doesn't stop being interesting. The episode doesn't get boring which is surprising. However, I wouldn't call this series entertaining. It will probably capture your interest and it rightfully should. It also makes you think deeply but I don't have much of a desire to rewatch the series. Gosick

Jul 12, 2011

Story: Gosick is basically a decetive series with both a Victorian and school setting. The mysteries usually seem paranormal at first but the truth is revealed otherwise. While the mysteries themselves usually last an episode or two, there is a greater plot which bits are told through each mysteries. It is slow paced for the most part but that isn't a bad thing. The ending was definitely the most exciting mystery and the ending was much more face paced than the rest of the series. It was kind of like an adrenaline rush with a very fitting ending. The mysteries did have both surprising and predictable... See full review

Dream Eater Merry

Jul 11, 2011

Story: The concept of dream and dream demons was very interesting. I liked the idea and adding a cute heroine definitely made things better. However, it just didn't deliver as well as I would have liked. They had a good thing going but the ending felt so complete. They added all these undeveloped bits that I wonder why they added them in the first. What was the point of mentioning the romance or introducing certain ideas if they won't be carried out? The ending was mediocre at best leaving many unanswered questions. It had good ideas and theme along with some cuteness and humour but that wasn't enough. The... See full review

Deadman Wonderland

Jul 10, 2011

Story: I'm usually not much for gore but I was really interested in this series for some reason. It starts of with a very interesting premise with Ganta going to the prison Deadman Wonderland for a crime he doesn't commit. It continues the madness and insanity through all the episdoes. The pacing is great without an episode of filler or a dull moment. There is a great amount of shock factor after a simply calm and almost happy moment. However, the finale leaves MUCH to be desired. It is definitely banking on a second season because there are SO many questions that are left untold along with many people's... See full review

Darker than Black

Jun 27, 2011

Story: I really liked the concept and pacing of the series. It didn't go too fast but not too slow either. It usually consisted of 2 episode long stories with some events in each that dealt with the bigger picture. However, I am disappointed with the ending. I felt there were too many things left unanswered and vague. The explanation for what happened in the past was also unclear. The plot did have some predictable moments but there were more surprises to balance it out. Although for the most part, I really enjoyed the series. Code Geass: Lelouch of the Rebellion

May 28, 2011

Story: I'm not usually a fan of mecha or political series. I'm especially not a fan of series involving stragies because I usually don't understand what's going on. For example, in Death Note, I need all of that explanation or I really would have no clue what was going on. However, Code Geass was a complete surprise. I incredibly enjoyed it. At first, I thought it was ok. However, as I continued the series, I became enthralled. I wanted to keep going. The pacing was excellent. K-On!

May 28, 2011

Story: Music and cute girls. It's very hard to go wrong with that. The series itself was very light and full of fun. Although the series did have a few serious moments, the warm feeling never disappears. Nothing extraordinary or dramatic happens but that's not to be expected. What was unexpected was how humorous and enjoyable this series became. For a slice of life series, I didn't expect it to be so enticing and funny. Usually, slice of life is just a series I watch one episode of for some change of pace. K-on wasn't quite that. It was something I wanted to watch more and more of. The story moves fluidly... Story: I heard a lot of good things about Lucky Star. However, it didn't quite live up to my expectations. It was funny but not hilarious. Maybe if I understood more of the parodies, I would have enjoyed it more. It was very light and cute. Nothing too serious or would take a lot thinking. I only took off points because it wasn't as funny as I was expecting. I was entertained for the most part but I wasn't incredibly excited to watch the next. I thought the ending was too open ended for me. The Lucky channel was ok. It did get better. Also, I didn't expect too much of a plot and that's what I got. The... See full review

Is this a Zombie?

Apr 17, 2011

Story: This anime felt like a hodgepodge of different genres and concepts put into one. Usually, it makes for a confusing and inconsistent series. However, that’s not quite the case. Kore wa Zombie Desu Ka blended several elements together in a comedic fashion and I felt that for the most part, they were successful. It had hilarious, ridiculous and sad elements. However, the ending didn’t tie things up very nicely and the resolution was a bit anticlimactic I expected a little more. Also, the pacing was strange. Story: I love magical girl, comedy and romance. That is what Ultra Maniac was supposed to be. However, it didn't live to my expectations at all. I wasn't expecting much. At the very least, some humor with some fluff. I didn't even get that. At the very best, I got a chuckle. It was also very predictable. When I watch fluff, I expect at least some drama and something surprising. However, there was little that wasn't unpxpected.  The romance and the magical girl was lackluster. There were random flashbacks that weren't fully explained. People's pasts weren't fleshed out enough either. I liked the ninja aspect of it but I became confused at times. In addition, the resolution for the climax felt anticlimatic and I did enjoy the ending as bittersweet as it was. All in all, I enjoyed watching the series. It had laughs, action, comedy and drama.
