yeah i feel like some can overplay the cutesy innocence thing with young characters..you even find it with some similarly dark stories..there'll be a random cutesy kid that just doesn't fit the tone of the rest of the story..
asano still has those happy go lucky sorts of characters (like Ontan) but idk if it's how he plays them off other characters or if it's just that you and the charcter both feel "in on" the oblivious nature of the character that makes it work so well..
you know i was actually drawn to watching perfect insider for the character design!! i saw the cover picture and just went for it!
but yes i love his style sooo much the blend of realism and cartoon is on point. i think it's hard to get that combination to mesh well without the cartoon side or the realism side looking awkward and out of place but he does a really good job :)

I've only read a few of his things, a bit of a Girl by the Sea, half of dededededededead dead demon's destruction, and all of oyasumi punpun ^^
I was really drawn to his art style. The detail is incredible *^*
