Mar 3, 2021Unordinary is almost like a relic of an era gone. It has the feel of a pre 2010 webcomic, with the quality of art and writing to back it up. This is a webtoon almost certainly done by an amateur artist (I believe she started this in college) and while I can see some talent in this webtoon, the quality is poor throughout. Everything is mediocre to bad so lets just get straight into the critique.
The world building is remarkably bad - While not everything needs explained, the society has been coded to have the strong be high class and the weak be low class. There are so many issues with the world building in this webtoon that the more I think about it, the more it hurts my head. I'll just list a few.
- If weak people are low class, why are they going to a school where the most gifted people go?
- Why does power predominate class if society isn't run on people using their power?
- Power doesn't appear to be hereditary, so why are weak people coded as being under cyclical poverty?
You essentially have to bash your head against the wall so you become illiterate so you don't think of these things as you read the story.
The characters are essentially poor soap opera tropes - All the characters are idiots who act like 5 year olds. There is some leniency as these characters are highschoolers, but so much stupidity happens that it's hard to read.
The violence is just too much - This is related to the world building but people just beat the shit out of each other for no reason and the teachers just watch and accept it. What the hell kind of highschool allows so much excessive violence?
The social commentary is uninspired at best - The social commentary of unordinary is clear as soon as the first chapter. It's really poorly done as it's essentially written as if bystanders to abusers should be given a pass if they sometimes step in to help, despite benefitting from the abuser's actions. It's almost as if the author has "both sides" an unequal abusive relationship. I'm not impressed.

While I personally don't believe this manga should be this low, you've got a lot of great points on the plot, the tropes, and the world building problems. I do recalls skipping large swaths of the chapters just so I could get to better parts because of how they tried to develop other characters in haphazard ways or make them act very stupid. Any plot point with the main character was thrilling, especially getting to see his descent into madness.
The art is definitely below average, I distinctly remember running character moovment looking stiff, like they were running without moving their elbows or knees. Reminded me of crappy stick figure animation. And I had to try really hard not to think about world building while reading. I was initially fine with it only because the author did not go into much detail about how society functions. Then all of a sudden it starts trying to explain it's nonsensical world and I could ignore it no more. It's a fun power fantasy but it feels like someone just came up with the initial plot for the MC’s and that they would figure out the world building later if the story got populer.
No your nitpicking too much the story isn't the best in the world but its good and the art is great the characters are bit bad but they didn't go through character devlopment yet so wait then judge and your giving a webtoon the standards like its the next best book in the century for what it is its a great book about power fanstay and a mc trying to get over his past and become a good person its at least lowest score a 7/10 you might not like it to your standards but for its audience its a good webtoon it has its flaws but it isn't trying to be the best to ever exist but trying to be what most people enjoy a power fantasy book just stop nitpicking and you might enjoy it cause most people do
