When Marnie Was There

May 30, 2022

The movie was very touching and philosophical, perfecty showing the issues of coming of age. The story of a young girl who feels like she doesn't have her place in this world, doesn't belong to anywhere and struggles with daily life. The girl moves from always noisy town to a peaceful and beautiful village. Surrounded with nature, different people she finally gets her chance to glow up. And there is an old fashioned mansion where a girl named Marnie lives with is a magical place as so is the girl herself.

I am amazed by how they showed that the more Ann has spended time with Marnie and sinked in this ,,dream world", the more she was losing the sense of the reality.

What about psychological aspects? Ann is irrtated and flustrated and that is why she called a girl at the festival ,,fat". She didn't realy meant it, she was just upset that aunt and uncle made her go to a festival and didin't even asked her if she wanted it. It is not like she didn't wanted to go either. Ann just feels anxiety and is scared of wethever she will be accepted or not. Also the girl at the festival mentioned Ann's blue eyes. The color of her eyes is another reason why she feels different and that she doesn't belong there. Her social anxiety is very reasonable. She thinks that nobody realy wants her and people who addoped her are caring for her only because of the money that they get from this. She is mad with herself about what she has done at the festival and feels guilty. But also she is to scared to apologise, she doesn't even know how she supposed to do it. But after all Ann is just a realy nice nad good girl who just lost herself a bit. She just needed a good guide to show her the right way. Actually it was not just a one guide. The man on the boat who helped her out during afflux- he acceped her presence, even tho he was far from a social person himself. Marnie- the girl who had a diffrent color of hair and eyes from local people. And so has Ann found somone similar to her, who is diffrent from everybody around too. Marnie was a very energic character who has at instance becamed close with Ann, shorting the distance between them at the very beginig of their relationship. That gaved Ann sense of comfort and real, solid bound with someone. Marnie becamed the place that Ann belonged to. When Ann showed jealousy because of Kazuhiko she didin’t had any bad intentions. This feeling was pure, Ann was scared that she might losse her finally acquired ,,place” as Marine might have focus on relationship with Kazuhiko and losse interest with Ann. What about the aunt and uncle? They were realy gentle, easygoing and understanding. They cared and gived Ann space that she needed. They didin’t shout and never tried to control her. They knewed that Ann has her issues and decided to be her silent guardians who can react if things get realy meesy. Sayaka was importnant to. She becamed friends with Ann and by that Marnie stopped to be Ann’s only friend. Marnie was no longer an exception and Ann saw that also people from ,, the real world” can build a relationship with her (Before the ending of a movie, Ann didn’t realy knowed if Marnie was only the girl from her dreams or an actuall person. She didin’t even bother as she accepted the natural flow of things) Luckily Ann gets to find out where she cames from and we see how important it was for her to know her roats. Also she realises that she was loved, wanted, bounded with other people and that she is not an stranger from nowhere.

Marnie was a lonely child closed in a big mansion. Her parents visited home rarely, but she obediently
waited for them and enjoyed every moment she got to spend with them. But most of the time it was only Marnie, her nanny and two maids. Nanny was realy strict, a bit abusive and she isolated Marnie from the outside world so the girl didin’t realy had a change to meet or spend time with other children. Maids were abusive and realy mean toward Marnie, tring to scare her, force her to go to a place she was affriad of, made fun of her. But Marnie never said anything bad about them to Ann. Marnie seemed to fully accept how the things were and she didin’t even notice how bad the situation was. Or maybe she just knowed that there is nothing she can do other than waiting in that isolated mansion for her parents, while being treated badly. After all it was the only thing she had. Well, maybe not the only one. She also had two friends. One of them, Kazehiko was like a warm light in the storm for Marnie. He was there for her unilke her parents and he was nice for her unlike the maids and nunny. He was her comrade who camed to save her and comfort her when she was scared. Marnie wanted to be free and build her freedom with someone who gaved her hope. Her dream was to build a family with Kazuhiko, with was not like her own. She decided to make a family that won’t abandon the child. But sadly that didin’t worked. Kazuhiko died and she was left alone with her child. She felt apart after loosing such an importat person who saved her from lonely world. She was afraid that she won’t be able to rise a child propebly. She wanted to mentaly recover first and than came back for her little girl. But when she done so, her doughter was mad with her. After all she abounded her and made her suffer. Her daughter doesn’t want to know her and doesn’t contact with her. Marnie knows that her daughter is right and feels bad with herself. Marnie life surely wasn’t the best one. Than more despair has camed. Her daughter died in an accided leaving alone her only child. Marnie takes care of her granddaughter the best as she can and loves her with all of her heart. She does for her things she couldn’t do for her own daughter. But than Marnie dies and Ann is left alone.

The memory/ soul of Marnie sees how Ann struggles with the world and wants to help her, so Ann won’t end up as Ann’s biological mother. She wanted to be for Ann someone like Kazehiko was for her. But she knows that it cannot last forever and that Ann needs to find another friends in the present world and open up her heart, so she could truly enjoy living.

It was just touching and beautiful.
