Historical Intrigue (Political Intrigue /Battle Tactics At War /Royalties Retrieving The Throne)

Review of anime/donghua I watched that are set in a specific era in history and which plot centers around war between countries and clans, tactics, politicking, court intrigue, and royalties fighting for the throne. No mecha, no slice of life, no isekai. Scored and sorted by genre/sub plots. Sequels are clustered with the prequel.
1 Ooku: The Inner Chambers

Ooku: The Inner Chambers

Medieval, royalty, political, court intrigue

Setting - Edo era japan

Score: 8/10

Level of political intrigue or battle tactics: High

--

The plot centers around the secrets behind the inner chambers of the Tokugawa clan. The show plays with the idea of what Edo era Japan would've looked like if the country's population ran short of males. The visuals wasn't great, but it was tolerable. The show stands out for its unique premise.

2 No Doubt In Us

No Doubt In Us

Court intrigue, political, royalty, romance, comedy

Setting: Ancient china

Score: 7/10

Level of political intrigue or battle tactics: High

--

Court intrigue and power struggle within the imperial court. The CGI animation is irredeemable, but the political aspect of this show carries the story. There aren't many shows that focus on on political intrigue in the imperial court, but if it weren't for the visuals, this may be the my most favorite so far.

3 No Doubt In Us: Part II

No Doubt In Us: Part II

4 No Doubt In Us 2

6 Raven of the Inner Palace

Raven of the Inner Palace

Political, historical lore, royalty, court intrigue

Setting: Ancient China

Score: 7/10

Level of political intrigue or battle tactics: Mid

--

The story is about the secrets behind the founding of the inner palace of China. The plot for each episode ties in very well with the character development. Hints of romance, generally supernatural. Visually pretty. I wanted a little more political intrigue from this one.

7 Le Chevalier D'Eon

Le Chevalier D'Eon

Political, royalty, revolution, court intrigue

Setting: pre French Revolution

Score: 6/10

Level of political intrigue or battle tactics: High

--

This one had a good political intrigue to it. Secrets behind the current monarch's heritage/ blood lineage. But the animation was meh, and I didn’t like the supernatural setting. The show was also very depressing to watch. I grew tired of listening to the incantations.

8 ACCA: 13-Territory Inspection Dept.

ACCA: 13-Territory Inspection Dept.

Political, revolution, royalty

Setting: Modern day Europe (?)

Score: 7/10

Level of political intrigue or battle tactics: High

--

Power-hungry officers conspiring a coup d'etat. Royalties under cover. There's a lot of political intrigue to this show, but this show stands out mostly for its stylish character design and chill atmosphere.

9 Magi: The Labyrinth of Magic

Magi: The Labyrinth of Magic

Political, royalty, coup de tat, slavery, magic.

Setting: Arabia, 11-12th century.

Score: 7/10

Level of political intrigue or battle tactics: Mid

--

Shounen with characters wielding magical weapons. Awesome soundtracks and battle scenes. Interesting characters and good character development. In terms of political intrigue, I found the Alibaba arc and his coup d'etat to be particularly interesting.

10 Magi: The Kingdom of Magic

Magi: The Kingdom of Magic

The characters grew up from last season and acquire new powers. This was season one minus the interesting character development. There was much more political stuff going on in the first season.

6/10

11 Romeo x Juliet

Romeo x Juliet

Romance, fantasy, royalty, feud between households, retrieving the throne.

Setting: Medieval Italy

Score: 6/10

Level of political intrigue or battle tactics: Mid

--

Shakespeare‘s Romeo and Juliet with a fantasy twist. There isn’t much to praise about this show, but it did make me cry hard. The music was good and very fitting.

12 Requiem of the Rose King

Requiem of the Rose King

Medieval, royalty, political, war between households, revenge, retrieving the throne

Setting: 15th century England, War of the Roses

Score: 6/10

Level of political intrigue or battle tactics: Mid

--

Based on Shakespeares' Richard the Third. The dingy medieval atmosphere of this show reminds me of the game of thrones where lust is used to manipulate political figures and people are constantly at each other's throats. The show stands out for its abstract, cheap but artistic animation. From episode 5, it becomes clear that gender identity is the main theme of this show.

13 Yona of the Dawn

Yona of the Dawn

Romance, royalty, revenge, retrieving the throne.

Setting: Korea, some time between 57 BC to 668 AD

Score: 6/10

Level of political intrigue or battle tactics: Low

--

Romance with character development. Very shoujo. Episodes without plot progression I found to be very boring, but the rest was fine and generally very cute. The political intrigue stops at episode one whereas the show should have focused on the power balance between the different clans and Yona's father.

14 Mo Dao Zu Shi

Mo Dao Zu Shi

War between clans, rebellion, cultivation, fantasy

Setting: Ancient China

Score: 9/10

Level of political intrigue or battle tactics: High

--

About a sorcerer's rise to power against the backdrop of tyranny, rebellion and conspiracies.

I was very impressed by the world building. The show is mesmerizing, in its plot, characters, visuals and music.

But it's so hard to distinguish between the characters because they are being referred to with multiple names. It's hard to tell apart characters from the same clan because their names are so hard to remember and they look so similar to each other. The lengthy flashback in the first season makes the story extremely difficult to follow.

15 Mo Dao Zu Shi 2

Mo Dao Zu Shi 2

Continuation to the first season. 9/10

16 Mo Dao Zu Shi 3

Mo Dao Zu Shi 3

Very neat and masterful plot. The connection between events that took place in the three seasons are fully explained in this season. Lots of twists and interesting revelations. The show does a very good job at making you attached to its side characters, due to the characters being so well-written. Very wholesome. Visually impressive, aesthetically pleasing, the music is breathtaking.

I rewatched all three seasons straight after finishing this show. There are many details in the first two seasons that you will not notice or understand until you watch the third season. High rewatch value.

10/10

17 Valkyria Chronicles

Valkyria Chronicles

Military, war, betrayal, fantasy.

Setting: Europe, early 20th century

Score: 6/10

Level of political intrigue or battle tactics: Mid

--

Slow start, but it gets entertaining later on. Heavy focus on war. Some backstabbing and shocking events ensue. I liked the sub plot romance between the main leads.

18 Basilisk

Basilisk

Medieval, romance, feudal, war between clans, mind games

Setting: 17th-18th century Edo period, Japan

Score: 5/10

Level of political intrigue or battle tactics: Mid

--

Romeo and Juliet in feudal Japan. The plot, pacing and animation are ok. The biggest weak point is the ugly design of the side characters. Also includes many disturbing scenes. I did not enjoy watching this show.

19 Berserk

Berserk

Medieval, war, mercenaries.

Setting: Medieval Europe

Score: 8/10

Level of political intrigue or battle tactics: Mid

--

The character regression in this one was shocking. Artistic. No political tag but it's still political.

20 Vinland Saga

Vinland Saga

Medieval, war, slavery

Setting: the Vikings

Score: 7/10

Level of political intrigue or battle tactics: Low

--

This show is about a boy who is caught up in vengeance, until the time comes when he finally lets go. The main issue I had with this show was its slow pacing. The political aspect of the show kicks in with the appearance of Canute and his rise to power. Frankly, I think I would've enjoyed the show more if it had focused on Canute's political journey rather than Thorfinn's character development.

21 Vinland Saga Season 2

Vinland Saga Season 2

The focus of the show shifts from war/politics to the main character's daily struggles as a slave and his coming into terms with being a victim of war. Canute's reappearance in the latter half of the show reintroduces the political intrigue that I enjoyed watching back in season 1.

5/10

22 Angolmois: Record of Mongol Invasion

Angolmois: Record of Mongol Invasion

Medieval, military, war, invasion.

Setting: 13th century, Japan.

Score: 5/10

Level of political intrigue or battle tactics: Mid

--

A ‘record’ of a certain war, mildly intriguing but absent of charm. It did have some interesting battle tactics. The fan service was gross and ugly. Very mediocre overall.

23 Legend of the Galactic Heroes

Legend of the Galactic Heroes

Military, political, drama, space war.

Setting: Space, europe

Score: 8/10

Level of political intrigue or battle tactics: High

--

Imagine gundam, but with mature MCs and no Gundams. The plot unfolds at the scale of an opera.

24 Izetta: The Last Witch

Izetta: The Last Witch

Political, magic, war.

Setting: pre WW2, Europe.

Score: 5/10

Level of political intrigue or battle tactics: Mid

--

About a young queen who wants to bring peace to her own country and her friendship with a witch.

Started with a promising premise, ended in a disappointing manner. Should have stuck with the political stuff. It was all ruined by fan service. Charming soundtrack.

25 Kingdom

Kingdom

Political, royalty, war, battle strategy, retrieving the throne, court intrigue.

Setting: China, B.C 221

Score: 6/10

Level of political intrigue or battle tactics: High

--

About a boy's rise to power and his ambitions to unite the kingdom. Heavy focus on war.

Very engaging plot albeit ruined by terrible CGI ish animation that doesn’t work. The MC is loud.

26 Kingdom 2

Kingdom 2

Better animation, although S1 had a better plot. All things considered it’s very entertaining and somewhat more decent than the previous season. But, I think there could’ve been more politicking and less fight scenes because those fight scenes were badly animated. Another problem I had with this show is the number of secondary characters I was introduced to who went off screen in one season. I can't recall any of them now that the season has ended.

6/10

27 Kingdom 3

Kingdom 3

The animation and music improved, massively. Greater focus on politicking and battle tactics. The character development was interesting and I liked that it showed how great a king Sei is.

7/10

28 Kingdom 4

Kingdom 4

The same production value as season 3. Good character development.

7/10

29 The Heroic Legend of Arslan

The Heroic Legend of Arslan

Medieval, royalty, political, military, battle strategy, retrieving the throne, slavery

Setting - Medieval Persia?

Score: 9/10

Level of political intrigue or battle tactics: High

--

Engaging plot, interesting characters, lovely character design, thought provoking, the animation was tolerable. Hinted mystery behind the prince's blood lineage. Talks about the difficulty of overcoming conflicts due to differences in values and religion. Lots of interesting battle tactics.

Incomplete series that should have a third season.

30 The Heroic Legend of Arslan: Dust Storm Dance

The Heroic Legend of Arslan: Dust Storm Dance

Second season. The plot degraded, massively because of the half-assed romance between Narsus and mountain girl.

7/10

31 Altair: A Record of Battles

Altair: A Record of Battles

Medieval, political, war, battle strategy.

Setting: loosely around 16th century, Turkey

Score: 7/10

Level of political intrigue or battle tactics: High

--

About a young military leader who wants to bring peace and balance to his nation. Shounen that involves lots of battle tactics and character development. I thought it was very decent contrary to popular opinion.

32 Alderamin on the Sky

Alderamin on the Sky

Military, fantasy, war, battle strategy, slavery

Setting: Somewhere in the Middle East?

Score: 7/10

Level of political intrigue or battle tactics: High

--

About a strategist who wants to put an end to slavery and war.

Superficial at first, quite intelligent later on. MC is a tactician.
