Fairy Tail

Feb 9, 2015

The most generic shounen garbage imaginable.
Stock story, stock characters, stock animation.
If you like originality and creativity avoid at the speed of light.

The Secret World of Arrietty

Jun 23, 2011

Although a decent feature by itself, it has no business being a Ghibli main production.

For all the amazing state-of-the-art animation and artwork that one should rightfully expect from Ghibli, barely anything happens in this movie to justify it. And that brings forth a disappointment.

A more slice of life-ish approach isn't a bad thing, but I'm not waiting 3 years for each new Ghibli project to see something this mediocre, plot/direction-wise speaking, that any other studio could have produced easily.

Steamboy

Feb 14, 2011

It is pretty much a shock to find out that this is not, in fact, an adaptation, but deliberate animated project. It feels as if 20 volumes of manga development were compressed to fit in one feature length movie. It's hard to believe the most expensive Japanese project that took over 10 years to make could have such a lousy and boring plot. Non the less it does.

Gorgeous animation couldn't make up for completely mediocre story, bland characters with no development and disappointing resolution. If that is what studio was going after, it surely failed. Steam Boy feels as if it was a movie version of... See full review

Sora Tobu Yuureisen

Feb 4, 2011

A great classic created by legend Shotaro Ishinomori which deserves much more that just an hour long adaptation. Created with absolutely mind blowing animation for it's time of release, which played a major part in movie's very short length and condensed plot, "Flying Ghost Ship" tells an extremely interesting story with a potential to be a whole franchise if expanded, but alas. Everything in production is just top notch, epic alarming score, beautiful backgrounds, very simple in style, but masterful animation Hayao Miyazaki himself played a part in.

If there's a definition for classic... See full review

Macross Zero

Feb 3, 2011

As with all projects in the Macross franchise, Macross Zero has virtually nothing to do with the original show and instead works the ground for the Macross Frontier series.
The biggest minus of this installment lies in that it was announced as a 'prequel' to the original Macross, but, as mentioned above, really is a "spiritual" prequel to Frontier. And not uses it's position to expand the events and characters from original show, which you would expect it will. Instead, it tells a pretty generic story, not completely uninteresting to it's credit, but no where near close to the expectations of... See full review

Super Dimensional Fortress Macross: Do You Remember Love

Feb 1, 2011

Leaving only the main premise of the original show and changing drastically almost everything else, Macross - Do You Remember Love presents a different take on the story telling and character development. Is this take a superior one? Well, for the most part - no. With that said, it's not a bad variation either. Feature length obviously forced writers to compress a lot of key material which should have much more time to develop. Thus leaving a feeling of an incomplete story. But this brief version also answers and establishes few things even the original, with all it's length, forgot.

Served with... See full review

Macross Plus

Feb 1, 2011

Al tough having basically nothing to do with the original series apart from general setting and few terms derivative from that, Macross Plus presents a very solid project which actually deserves much more than just OVA/theatrical release. After disaster that was Lovers Again, Macross Plus takes franchise back to serious writing and development, with gorgeous, revolutionizing at the time animation and great soundtrack.

Macross 7

Feb 1, 2011

Horrible, just horrible.

The biggest questions out of dozen that crosses one's mind is 'what were they thinking?' and 'are you kidding?'

How do you turn a respectable classic series with great story, great writing and great design into tasteless lazy mess for 9 y.o. kids?
Everything is so bad and weak, you're starting to wonder what was the point in going to such lengths as to proclaim Lovers Again a filler, when your 'cannon' is equally terrible if not worse.

It's almost shocking that the story and mecha designs are actually made by Shoji Kawamori himself, considered... See full review

Summer Wars

Jan 25, 2011

Summer Wars present a weird example of how even doing everything seemingly right, project can still be a generic and forgettable.

Nothing is really bad about it, but then again nothing is really good. Animation is very decent, but just so bland and not interesting, with no particular style or souce to it.
Story is again, seemingly original and competent, but tedious and gray. You're not invested in any characters and don't really care any way or another about conflict or resolution. Watching the movie through all it's length the only desire I had was to finish it and go on with my tasks.... See full review

Ergo Proxy

Jan 25, 2011

Ergo Proxy is trying so hard to look and sound important, smart, philosophical and challenging, that it completely loses it's own point and purpose, fails on every level and becomes extremely boring and annoying.
In this sense it reminds me of Matrix sequels.

I can't remember even one single element of the show that turns out even remotely interesting. And the most disappointing part is, I really wanted this to be a great show. It looked very good, it promised great things in first few episodes... but then what happened? It just suddenly starts sinking under the weight of it's own... See full review

Akira

Jan 25, 2011

There really is no need for a long review when it comes to Akira. A project of this importance to both Japanese and western animation deserves a watching from basically anyone who reached maturity. Even the excessive blood (which really isn't that excessive in comparison to many other titles) shouldn't be an obstacle. There's always an aspect to adaptation - that many important events in the manga didn't make it's way to the movie, but considering time limit what was chosen is pretty much perfect.
What this movie needs is a theatrical re-release. What it doesn't needs is an American remake.
