Action is about conflict. Whether with guns, blades, fists, or mysterious powers, these anime feature characters in combat - either to protect themselves or the things or people they value, or simply as a way of life.

In these anime, characters embark on a journey to explore the world or to search for something. These wanderers travel to many places and meet new people, often encountering hardships along the way, or discovering strengths and weaknesses about themselves that are revealed throughout the adventure.

The universe is vast, and it's easy to imagine that there might be non-human life on distant worlds. Whether physically similar to mankind or vastly different, these works feature beings born on other worlds. Anime that take place on Earth might encounter unexpected visitors with unknown intentions; or on the homeworld of another culture, human beings are the Aliens.

These anime predominantly or fully take place in the United States of America.

Androids are artificially-created beings that are made to look and act like humans - in advanced cases, they are indistinguishable. As machines, they are often shown as possessing stronger logic and reasoning than real humans; however, this logic can also limit them, as they can have difficulty processing emotional concepts or social relationships. These anime feature Androids in starring roles, either as main characters or as important elements of the plot or setting.

Assassins specialize in killing targeted individuals. These anime showcase assassins in training or on the job, whether they're a part of an organized group or work as freelancers.

These anime follow bounty hunters as they travel the land or the galaxy, tracking criminals or targets, capturing or killing them, and collecting the bounties on their heads.

Harder, better, faster, stronger. Cyborgs are organic beings enhanced by mechanical prosthetics, granting them abilities beyond those of mere mortals. Where does the man end and the machine begin?

A delinquent is a young person, generally of school age, who has a problem with following social rules or the word of authority figures. These anime typically focus on the group dynamics of a delinquent's gang of friends, or the misadventures they get into thanks to their attitudes and actions.

Constant panty shots, bouncing breasts and dubious camera angles are hallmarks of an Ecchi title. These titles are usually sexualized and designed to titillate, depicting perverted themes and focusing heavily on the female body. Nosebleeds, suspicious hand positions, faceplanting into bosoms, expressive and exaggerated body parts and other tropes characterize this genre. Ecchi is all about fanservice, while Borderline H and Smut titles focus more on sexual content.

Episodic anime are a collection of separate stories loosely connected by a theme or one or more central recurring characters.

These anime contain graphic acts of physical conflict, such as weapon fights that result in visible mutilation or realistically-depicted dismemberment, gruesome deaths, or people exploding into viscera.

Fantasy anime take place in a broad range of settings influenced by mythologies, legends, or popular and defining works of the genre such as The Lord of the Rings. They are generally characterized by a low level of technological development, though fantasy stories can just as easily take place in our modern world, or in a Post-apocalyptic society where technology was buried alongside the old world. These anime also tend to feature magic or other extraordinary abilities, strange or mysterious creatures, or humanoid races which coexist with humanity or inhabit their own lands removed from ours.

These anime showcase close-quarters combat, from Martial Arts, to Boxing, to flat out street brawling and beyond. Hand-to-hand combat includes all forms of kicks, punches, grabs, or throws, or even stranger close quarters maneuvers.

A harem includes three or more characters who potentially show romantic interest in a male protagonist. The sex, gender, or orientation of the harem members is irrelevant as long as they exclusively, or at least primarily, are vying for the affections of the same individual - who may or may not reciprocate towards one, several, or none of these romantic rivals.

These anime feature young, generally school-aged girls as defenders of love, life, and justice. They typically stumble upon the source of a magical power, or are granted one by allies that are aware of evil forces on the rise. Often by using a special item or with the help of a magical familiar, these characters are able to transform into an alter-ego ready to cause mischief or fight their foes. Magical Girl is a sub-genre of Henshin Heroes.

Martial arts are techniques that heavily involve training and are steeped in tradition. These techniques can have varied applications such as self-defense, psychological health or advanced use of weaponry, amongst others. Characters in these anime often spend much of their time training to defend themselves or others, participate in competitions of skill, honor their culture, or develop their health and spirituality.

Mecha are self-propelling machines that are modeled after humans; some can change into multiple, non-humanoid formats as well. They're usually controlled by an internal pilot or by remote, but are sometimes sentient beings that move autonomously. A mecha's size ranges from bulky, wearable armor to a massive, towering contraption and beyond. While mecha have a wide range of applications, such as making manual labor easier, they are most commonly portrayed as heavily-armed war machines.

Ninjas study the ancient art of ninjitsu. Skills include disappearing in a puff of smoke, making temporary clones, heightened physical agility and speed, stealthy movements, and precision accuracy. Bright-orange attire is optional.

These titles have a mild amount of nudity, either because of Ecchi or light fanservice, mild Sexual Content, or simply a one-off shower scene or hot springs visit.

The word otaku describes a person with obsessive interests, usually in the realm of anime and manga fandom. Characters in these anime may be shown visiting stores to acquire new merchandise, cosplaying as their favourite heroes or heroines, meeting and trading Doujins at fan conventions, or arguing online about works from their favourite authors or studios.

These anime imitate well known genres, styles or characters in an exaggerated, comedic manner to poke fun at them.

Characters in these anime find themselves in a world very different from their own. They may have been suddenly whisked away to a strange world, become stuck in a video game, or are trapped in a different time period. Common themes include trying to discover how to get home, coming to terms with a new life in a new place, or political or social involvement with the local populace. Police forces are responsible for upholding the justice of their nation and/or community. These anime follow uniformed men and women as they carry out their duties: patrolling the streets, investigating crimes or potential criminals, or keeping citizens safe, whatever the time or place.
