Beastars

May 20, 2020

I haven't written a review in ages, but found the motivation to do so only because I kept scrolling down to find a review I agreed with, but couldn't: it was just one extremely positive review after the other. So here are my two cents.  Beastars isn't a bad anime. It's just nothing special. I watched it to the end and to be honest I quite liked Legoshi, the main character. Animation is good as well as the sound, the OP is jazzy and catchy. It's clear that some effort went in the production values. As for the story and the world it's set in, they don't make much sense. Or rather, the world building is... See full review

Violet Evergarden

May 2, 2018

In one word: Over-rated.  You can read what it's about in the synospis, so I won't bother repeating it. I find the premise and setting disappointing and ridiculous. It's a non-technologically advanced world just come out war, where most people are supposedly illiterate so much so that they need girls to "ghost-write" letters on ancient looking typewriters to convey their feelings to their loved ones. Yet there's newspapers (even gossipy tabloids) and people go to school, and lo and behold Violet's prosthetic metallic arms arise no more than a curious glance. We are told that someone (forgot... March Comes in like a Lion 2nd Season

Apr 25, 2018

I'm conflicted about this one. I immensely enjoyed the first season. But this second one...leaves me a lot less enthusiastic. It's still above average, don't get me worng, but in my opinion it's simply not as good as the first season. Even though I have only read glowing reviews about this, so I know many people don't agree.  I like and commend the production values, colours, character designs, backgrounds, music, voice actors...it's all extremely good. I find that the characters are very well portrayed and I fully share in the philosophy of life behind this anime. I like the realistic take on life... See full review

The Ancient Magus' Bride

Apr 17, 2018

I am absolutely not impressed by this. I actually think it was a waste of my time. The plot is full of holes and is naive at best, the characters just..meh...  Production values, animations, backgrounds, colours, music, opening and ending songs are really good. But apart from that, I wouldn't recommend it. Chise is just about the only character that is portrayed in a half-decent way, as in we know where she's coming from so you can kind of empathise with her. As for the rest, I just couldn't feel anything for any of them. Elias is a big whole of nothing. Cartaphilus, the bad guy, leaves me just as... See full review

Inuyashiki: Last Hero

Dec 29, 2017

I do not recommend this anime. I didn't like it, I found the story predictable and absolutely lacking depth, with very poor character development. I didn't like the animation and character designs either. It started off mildly interesting as the protagnist is certainly different from your usual anime main character in that he's a 58 year old man who seems a lot older than his actual age and sees himself - and is seen by others - as totally insignificant and useless. And I'm not even against the irrealistic kick off to the show, the aliens that arrive and after killing by accident the two protagonists, in... See full review

URSA minor BLUE

Oct 28, 2017

I'm not impressed with this at all. The story is excessively simple and so are the characters. Like a story you could tell a three year old child - and it has nothing to do with the fact that it lasts only twenty minutes or so, because truly beautiful things can be created in twenty minutes. As a matter of fact, the plot is consistent and the world in which it is set - even if though just hinted at - is imaginative. The animation and character designs are extremely simple, too. But after a couple of minutes of watching, I realised that it's the animation with the music and slow pacing that all together... See full review

X TV

Oct 4, 2017

The first episode, episode 00 actually, was intriguing to say the least. A very enticing appetizer, if exceedingly mysterious. At the same time, I was wondering how it would all pan out, how the anime would manage to keep together and lead to a satisfying ending a story with so many characters, combining a bishounen in coma, end of the world themes, seven dragons of earth and seven dragons of heaven, seals and dreemseers, inevitable tragedy and a future that is - or is not - set in stone.... as well as swords, flying guys, temples, spells and pentacles but a modern day setting.... So, high expectations to... See full review

Tsuredure Children

Oct 3, 2017

first episode: 4 couples. 4 times 2 equals 8 characters, 4 love confessions in 12 minutes... second episode: 2 new characters (sister of class rep and self-proclaimed boring guy recruited into the astronomy club), 2 more couples, 6 characters, 2 confessions third episode: 6 new characters + 2 old ones. fourth episode: 6 caracters but, for the first time, no new ones. And, for the first time, I actually enjoyed it. fifth episode: made me chuckle a couple of times, but I'm already having trouble remembering if some of the characters are new or not... sixth episode: meh! i'm baffled. seventh episode: i... Lights of the Clione

Sep 28, 2017

I'm sorry, but this isn't actually worth watching. It's made up of 12 eight-minute episodes. The story is about Minori, a bullied girl, who also happens to be sick, orphaned and friendless. I guess they didn't make her maimed or blind as well, because she's already affected by a nameless - but undoutedly serious and life-threatening - disease. Her classmates, fearing to become the targets of the bullies themselves, don't have the courage to intervene and just watch as she is mercilessly harassed. Two of them in particular, out of guilt, try to get close to her, but obviously secretly and always out of... See full review

Hitorijime My Hero

Sep 23, 2017

Hitorijime My Hero is BL, but that you can see from the synopsis and the tags. As for my opinion, it started mildly interesting but then kind of deflated into barely watchable - to finally collapse on itself in an extremely disappointing ending. So there you have it, in a nutshell. The anime deals basically with two couples. The first 4 or so episodes are dedicated to one couple (two high school students of the same age who were very close childhood friends but then got separated only to get unexpectedly re-acquainted in high school) and after they get together (sorry, mild spolier), the anime moves on to... Love and Lies

Sep 20, 2017

What the hell did I just watch????? That was my reaction as soon as I finished the last episode. Up to half-way I was (hopefully but, alas, wrongly) under the impression there was some kind of intricate plot still to be developed, so I was trying to guess what was REALLY going on and at the same time trying to figure out what were all the LIES the title of the anime unmistakably promised. Then at a certain point I started having the feeling that, wait a second, maybe there was REALLY nothing to it after all and there were NO lies worth mentioning.  Don't get me wrong, there is a plot that gets... Saga of Tanya the Evil

Apr 27, 2017

I'd say to definetely give this a try if you're tired of usual anime and looking for something different, as it is undeniably quite peculiar: no schools, no school kids, no sports, no overflowing of good sentiments, no romance, no coming-of-age struggles.... The protagonist here is the villain, and as stated by other reviewers you should watch at least the first two episodes before deciding to drop it.  Youjo Senki is about a badass psycho calculating remorseless and ruthless 10 year old little blonde girl with huge blue eyes and no sense of compassion or sympathy for her fellow human beings who... March Comes in like a Lion

Apr 7, 2017

March comes in like a lion is about 17 year old Rei Kiriyama who became a professional shogi player when he was still in middle school - one of only five kids who managed to accomplish such a feat. That's why among the recommendations and similar anime you will find Hikaru no go, because they're both anime about board games. As a matter of fact, the comparison to Hikaru no go isn't very appropriate because in San gatsu no lion the board game - shogi, in this case - isn't the main focus point. I'd say March comes in like a lion resembles much more Honey and Clover - it's the same mangaka, the two anime feel... See full review

Scum's Wish

Apr 5, 2017

This is most definetely not your usual romance/love triangle anime. So if you're expecting some light-hearted and funny rom-com that follows the standard pattern of the genre and makes you feel all fluffy and good about yourself by the end, don't even try watching it. Personally, I think it's a well-done and thought-provoking anime about unrequited teenage love. I admit that the first episode seems pretty fucked-up, but then I was sucked in by the really good portrayal of the characters, their inter-relationships and their psychological development. And not only that, the development of the anime's themes... See full review

Super Lovers 2

Apr 2, 2017

If you liked Super Lovers 1, my suggestion is to go on and watch this second season as it's pretty much in line with the first. I maybe even liked it more. If you haven't seen the first, I don't think there's much point in watching this as it is the continuation of a story that was introduced in the initial anime. Same goes if, on the contrary, you were put off by Ren and Haru's relationship and especially Ren's age in the first season, don't even try watching this as you'll just get more of the same. It's shounen-ai and Ren is really young. I reviewed the first season too, so if you're interested you can... See full review

Haven't You Heard? I'm Sakamoto

Mar 9, 2017

After you've watched the first ten minutes of this anime, it's clear that Sakamoto-kun is cool, cooler, the coolest student in the entire high school. There's nothing he can't do, no task he can't perform perfectly well no discipline he can't master in the shortest of time. There's nothing that fazes him, they can throw anything at him and he dodges it stylishly, they can try bullying him all they want, but he always comes out on top looking amazing and unruffled and never even seems to notice the other students' envy and pettiness. So, yeah, at the end of the first episode I was asking myself if I'd ever... See full review

Yamada-kun and the Seven Witches PV

Feb 10, 2017

Yamada-kun and the Seven Witches is your typical comedy set in a high school which at the end becomes a bit of a rom-com. It's not bad, I watched it to the end and it had me laughing a couple of times in the last episodes. But it has nothing in terms of story, characters or animation that would make it memorable or particularly enjoyable in any way. It does get better in the last 5 episodes, I guess that's what saves it from being a total waste of time. But still. Short summary of the story. Yamada-kun is a high school student who one day accidentally falls from the stairs on top of one of his female... See full review

Please Teacher

Jan 25, 2017

I'm writing this short review just to vent my frustration. This is a really bad show and I honestly don't get all the positive and highly rated reviews. Ok, I am willing to admit that my rating is excessively harsh, as the anime does have a coherent story; so the rating pretty much reflects my personal dislike. But I just found this anime so extremely disagreeable and annoying, both character-wise and story-wise. In the end, I really couldn't force myself to watch the last two episodes. I always avoid writing reviews if I haven't seen all the anime right to its end and also - usually - if I don't like it... See full review

The Eden of Grisaia

Jan 22, 2017

Pretty much a waste of time. I wasn't overly impressed with the Fruit of Grisaia, but I admit that you remember that anime for all of the fucked up shit it throws at you. In this case, all of that is gone - which should be a relief, I know, but instead works out taking away from this series the little that made it memorable.  In the Fruit of Grisaia, just to sum it up briefly, you had Yuuji, the male protagonist with no backstory, enrolling in a private academy (for no discernible reason) whose only students are 5 other girls. Following the typical visual novel pattern, with multiple stories and... See full review

Gokusen

Jan 7, 2017

This could have been a great anime with awesome characters because the potential is most definetely there; if it had just taken itself a bit more seriously. As it is, it's a nice watch.  The story is about a yakuza heiress who has always dreamed of being a teacher. She gets hired for her very first job in a highschool with a poor reputation whose students are mostly troubled and defiant delinquents with difficult family situations. Obviously, the troubled teen who is a match for our protagonist does not simply exist. She's a tough lady with a very kind heart and the story is all about her bonding with... See full review

Jan 3, 2017

It's really a shame because this could have been a much better show. As it is, it's entertaining in a brainless kind of way...I watched it all in one go, and I admit I did laugh a couple of times. So yeah, it's not that bad, but I honestly won't watch it again and I don't know if I would recommend it. Certainly not if you want to watch something meaningful, emotionally involving, that gets you thinking or even laughing your head off. Because this doesn't do any of those things. The setting is an all-boy school which has the unusual tradition of dressing up some good-looking first year students as... See full review

Iblard Jikan

Jan 1, 2017

Iblard Jikan is a ..... visual experience, maybe. I wouldn't know how else to define it. No story no characters. Just a 30 minute slideshow of beautiful paintings with a relaxing soundtrack. Every painting has some kind of small animation going on, ripples in the water, leaves rustling, blades of grass moving ever so slightly to the wind, flowers budding, smoke billowing out from a chimney, clouds dancing in the sky...stuff like that. Sometimes there are old tram cars moving along tracks. And other times there are girls dressed in white or women who appear in the scene, open a window, wait for a tram, jump... See full review

The Great Passage

Dec 31, 2016

Fune wo amu appears to me as a "refreshing" view; meaning that the setting is original and different. It's about the dictionary editorial department of a publishing company trying to make a new dictionary called "The great passage". So, no schools no teenagers no kids at all - you obviously can't hear it, but there just was a big sigh of relief there. Despite the subject matter - which could be easily considered as the embodiment of dullness - it's not a boring anime. In the 11 episodes we follow the small group of editors as they work hard and overcome several obstacles in order to... See full review

Izetta: The Last Witch

Dec 23, 2016

I started watching this anime because of the lovely animation and what looked like an interesting setting. As a matter of fact, the first episode isn't too bad. But then it just isn't interesting. Really nothing special. Even boring at times. A dull and predictable story that didn't manage to draw me in. Clichèd and not developed characters who left no lasting impression and whom I couldn't relate to. So, I wouldn't really recommend it.  The story is kind of an alternative narration of WWII if witches and magical powers existed and the rulers of the countries at war could somehow convince them... Planetarian

Nov 24, 2016

I'll risk being unpopular with this one, but I don't think this is good. The animation is really well done, the visuals and character designs are nice as well as the sound - so excellent production values and a good presentation. The setting, in fact, is rendered quite well: a world on the brink of extinction under a relentless downpour that robs everything of colour. But that's just about all the positive I'm willing to say about it. The story is just way too cheesy for my taste. It's purposely aimed at emotionally influencing and manipulating the viewers. Nothing wrong with that - and to be honest I... See full review

Laughing Under the Clouds

Nov 21, 2016

Laughing Under the Clouds is a watchable anime with a coherent enough plot, some character development, an ending, as well as average animation and sound. It just fails to be memorable in any way.  The story is set in the Meiji era Japan, so at the beginning of the westernazion and modernization of the country, and it centres around three orphaned brothers who are responsible for delivering criminals by boat to the prison built in the middle of Lake Biwa. There's an evil dragon monster, the Orochi, which incarnates itself every couple of hundred years in a human being and the brothers' family through... See full review

Nov 18, 2016

I honestly wasn't expecting much from this show after having watched the first couple of episodes, but I'm glad I didn't drop it because it turned out better than I thought. Trigger is the Kill la kill studio, but I'd say that apart from some of the character designs and the animation, Kiznaiver really has little in common will Kill la kill. As I said, the first couple of episodes are bad in my opinion, it seemed a really stupid and clichèd story with really stupid and clichèd protagonists. But it gets better. Monochrome Factor

Nov 15, 2016

Monochrome Factor is another one of those anime which to me spell only wasted potential. Which is a pity and extremely frustrating. The initial 6 episodes introduce the characters and then until episode 22, it's just filler. Watchable, but certainly not great. If not to progress the plot, all of those episodes could have been used for character building and development, but -alas - they weren't. The characters, though clichèd are likeable; sadly, the openings for development are totally ignored. The story kicks in at episode 22, but these final three episodes where the main storyline is developed and... See full review

Last Exile is a good anime, worth a watch and definetely not a waste of time. I watched it for the first time some years ago but I didn't remember much, so I decided to give it another go: and I'm glad I did. It just seems like there's a lot of crappy anime recently, maybe the graphics are good - even great - but the stories are usually clichès or downright nonsensical. It starts with a mysterious column of light in the night sky and a power cut - and you just know that something bad has happened. This scene is repeated every couple of episodes and stays unexplained until episode 6. High school girls gossiping about missing students and spreading rumours and urban legends about a shinigami - boogiepop - said to be responsible for their disappearance. So it starts.
