Happy Sugar Life

Sep 17, 2018

Ahh... yandere. I mean it doesn't have to be awful, it's just that it's all pretty awful. Even then, we can get a perverse enjoyment from it. Two examples - School Days is truly one of the worst anime ever made (fight me), but it's still fun and I'd say I enjoyed Mirai Nikki more than I hated it. My point is, nobody apart from serial killers watches yandere series because they expect something deep and touching, but that doesn't have to stop us from enjoying it. Happy Sugar Life, however, is not very enjoyable to watch. I'd argue that the appeal of yandere series is their campy... See full review

Diabolik Lovers More, Blood

Dec 21, 2015

NO REAL PERSON CAN POSSIBLY LIKE DIABOLIK LOVERS. THE SAME APPLIES TO THIS SEQUEL. And  yes, I did watch it all. End of review. If you enjoyed Diabolik Lovers More, Blood, you might also enjoy - Vampire Knight, Angel Sanctuary, being swarmed by bees.

Lance N' Masques

Dec 19, 2015

This show is crap. There, I said it. I watched all of it and it just plain sucks, no qualifications. You  might then ask why I kept watching it, and I might be able to come up with some witty joke explaining why, but in reality it'd be a lie and I have no logical reason. It's obvious from the first 30 seconds that Lance N' Masques is going to be terrible (hell, I knew before I even started watching it just from the title and plot description). "Specific reasons you hated it?" might then be the next words out of your mouth. I grumble about having to remember things about this show, but... See full review

Sound! Euphonium

Jul 1, 2015

Tl;dr - blah blah blah, I just kept waiting for something interesting to happen. Then it was over. That's what she said, I know. Seems like there have been a lot of shows about high school musicians recently. Shigatsu wa Kimi no Uso was pretty great; it's part of the reason for this sudden explosion of a genre that was pretty limited before. Hibike Euphonium takes a little bit different approach and focuses on a high school band and their preparations for a competition. It has great production values and looks gorgeous... my only criticism on this part is that sometimes the music is too good. The... See full review

Gunslinger Stratos: The Animation

Jun 23, 2015

Tl;DR - Would you be surprised if a series whose source material is an arcade game is crap? Guess what! OK, so here we are talking about Gunslinger Stratos. As I alluded to, it's an anime that is based off of an arcade game, which is well known as a medium that is optimal for presenting rich and interesting storylines... ok you're already not taking this sentence seriously. Wasting time on a story is the opposite of what most arcade games want to do. If you waste time telling a story, then generally that's time spent where the player isn't playing, ergo the player isn't losing and... See full review

World Trigger

Jun 3, 2015

Tl;dr - one of the biggest (pleasant) surprises I've ever come across. Extremely good writing makes what at first seem like a somewhat lame premise into something great. Normally I only like to review shows that I've watched all of, but given that World Trigger is currently at episode 32 I'm feeling like it's a great time to sing the praises of this show, because it really deserves it. The basic premise of World Trigger is that there's a sort of rift between this world and some parallel universe. In the other world, instead of guns/knives/clubs/etc, people use things called "Triggers" to kill... See full review

Gundam Reconguista in G

Apr 1, 2015

I am unabashedly a fan of Mobile Suit Gundam and I have been since long before I even knew what "anime" was (thanks Toonami). I've seen very nearly every Gundam series in existence and have many fond memories of various moments in the series (08th MS Team is the best of course). It is no secret to me then that Gundam has truly been floundering in the past few years. Despite their [many] faults I rather loved SEED and SEED: Destiny, but since then the giant robot show that had a major role in establishing anime as a medium hasn't been doing so well. 00 had an interesting first half and weak... Yurikuma Arashi

Apr 1, 2015

It's been a while since Penguindrum (which I rather liked, though I don't understand the appeal of Revolutionary Girl Utena) and Ikuhara Kunihiko is finally back, this time with Yurikuma Arashi. One way to translate that title might be the completely nonsensical "lesbian bear storm." And such a title is nonsense because you have a hard time imagining someone making an anime (or anything, for that matter) about a raging tempest of bears and lesbians. However, that title actually isn't nonsense and pretty much describes the plot of the show- it's about a school full of girls (most of which are... See full review

Cross Ange: Rondo of Angels and Dragons

Mar 30, 2015

Well, let's start with a summary: Cross Ange wasn't quite as bad as I thought it was going to be. Now, it certainly wasn't good, but I must admit that despite a bad first impression, I enjoyed watching it just the tiniest little bit. Speaking of first impressions, this show did not make a good one. The establishing scenes set up the titular main character Ange as the princess of a eutopian society built around magic and also as a wicked good player of a game vaguely resembling Quidditch. However, various events transpire that see the Ange stripped of her station, branded a 'Norma' (someone who can't... See full review

Captain Earth

Sep 22, 2014

Captain Earth... the somewhat odd title turns out to be a title given to people who fly giant robots to fight ill-explained aliens (well, Captain is, but whatever), spoiling my hopes that this was going to be an awesome Captain Planet spinoff. Who are the ideal candidates to fly humanity's last chance at saving themselves? Hormonal teenagers is the answer, for anybody who hasn't seen an anime before. It has something to do with their "libido" (yes, the actual word they use is "libido"... more on that in a minute). So, what's good in Captain Earth? Well... umm... the animation is above... Harmagedon

Aug 17, 2014

Tl;dr: 10/10 must watch... lol jk. Harmagedon is a look back into the darkest days of anime in the United States and the West in general. It's interesting to consider as a historical artifact, but it's also quite funny to watch these days. If you can find a version with the English dubs grab some friends, get properly drunk and pop it in for some great times. Story / Background: The plot is a bit hard to describe, so I'll leave it to ANN: Traveling to America on a goodwill mission, Princess Luna of Transylvania has a vision. A life form of pure energy named Genma that destroys everything on it's path is... See full review

The Comic Artist and His Assistants

Aug 6, 2014

Tl;dr: Short episodes mean this series isn't so bad. Story: The main character is a perverted mangaka named Aito who is obsessed with panties. He is surrounded by people (specifically, women) that he works with and who overlook his perversions due to his blissful naiveté. There isn't a whole lot of plot, but if you were looking for a grand story in a half episode slice-of-life show about a perverted shut in then you probably don't care what I think. Most episodes revolve around Aito stumbling through awkward situations with his coworkers, with a few sprinklings of some light-hearted... See full review

Ping Pong The Animation

Aug 5, 2014

Tl;dr: One of the most original and exciting anime in recent memory.  Story: So, this is an anime about ping pong, if you couldn't guess that already. At its most basic level it follows several high school students playing srs bznss ping pong at the top of the Japanese competitive circuit. But the plot is really a lot more than that, with table tennis serving as the driving force behind what is ultimately about the motives and desires each character associates with competition. It is a generally uplifting tale and I have to applaud it in particular for its stellar conclusion. Without spoilers... See full review

Blade & Soul

Aug 5, 2014

Tl;dr: Bland crap that would have a hard time keeping a house plant interested. Before we get started, I want to make the disclaimer that Blade and Soul is based on a MMORPG by Korean studio NCsoft. I haven't ever played the game, so it's possible that somehow the game makes the anime make sense. That being said, I seriously doubt it makes any difference as it looks like the anime tries to be self-contained. Also I did watch all of this show, despite really not liking it after the first episode (which showed some potential). Story: Blade and Soul follows the adventures of the female assassin and... Kingdom

Aug 4, 2014

Tl;dr: Show is good, animation is bad. Story: Set in the Warring States period in Chinese history, Kingdom presents a vaguely historical tale about the unification of China, told primarily through the eyes of an ophan named Xin. It is a distinctly shounen anime, featuring sprawling battle scenes and characters proclaiming the glory of warfare and engaging in the intrigues of the royal court. The plot revolves around Xin and his rise to fame, along with his involvement in the actions of the royal court. Animation: The show uses that oddly unnerving pseudo-3d style that has been popular in recent years... See full review
